Leave a Review Gymboss Interval Timer
  • Terrible Now. You killed it.

This was one of my favorite fitness apps before the catastrophic update. I had all of my customized timers set up just the way I wanted them. Then, I woke up this morning, ready for a workout to discover the worst app update in recent memory.

I don't know whose idea it was to (surprise!) delete all of the user's custom timers, but that person should be fired and openly mocked on LinkedIn.

I just wanted to leave a scathing review before I delete this app and give some other app developer who doesn't hate their customers my time, attention and possibly my money. Farewell Gymboss. You're dead to me.

  • Terrible update

    1. The update deleted all the timers I made in the old version
    2. The new UI is a real pain to set up timers. It scrolls in weird ways and is hard to find the save button (which is actually "Add" in some places).
    3. Where did the stop watch go? I don't always want to count down.
    4. I still haven't figured out how to delete an interval within a timer. Setting its time to 0 isn't allowed. So be sure you have your timers set up right because there's no changing it.
    5. I can't figure out a way to copy a timer. So if you have 2 workouts that are very similar, you have to make them both from scratch.
    6. I like the 3-second warning at the end of the interval...but it would sure be nice to be able to turn it on/off for each interval, not for the entire app

To be fair, the old app wasn't perfect. But it had basic functionality working well. Now the app looks cool, but the functionality took a huge step backward.

  • Best app timer for your workouts

I love the Gymboss timer, but I sweat so bad that they die in less than 6 months. I take the battery out and wipe it out after every workout, but my sweat seems to kill the timer. I found the gym boss app for my iPhone this weekend when my timer went out. I had the new mini so I could do multiple intervals. With this app you can also create your own interval by adding more intervals to your created timer. You can use a preset one or create your own. I created my own. All you do is when making your intervals is use the bar at the top that has a plus sign, minus sign, a box and up down arrows. You click on the green box and it brings up another ‘New Interval” heading and the clock to set the time. It is very easy to use. I think I’m done with the timers. I’m tired of my sweat ruining them.

  • No Alerts while locked? No landscape or 4.5" support?

I just got back from my first workout using this timer. It was great, as long as my iPod was on.
I had some issues with the alert volume but I've since worked those out in the settings.

What I'd really like, among just about every other reviewer on here, is to have the alerts work while the device is locked.
It would also be really great if there were a landscape mode.
Since on iPods the headphone jack is on the bottom, I have to set it on its side when resting it in the magazine ledge. This means the display is now sideways and harder to read.

Oh, and 4.5" screen support would be great too.

Otherwise, the app is great. It's easy to program, very versatile, love the tones and the timer (when it's not sideways) is huge and easy to read.

  • Please Fix the alerts!

I gave the first Gymboss 5 starts it was absolutely awesome but will no longer work with the new iOS. The new version COULD be even better then the first if they can fix it and make so you can hear the interval alerts while you are playing music. Works fine if your in the gym on a bike or other piece of equipment where you can set down and look at it. But totally useless if you want to do any HIIT sprints or body weight work out side. Please fix!

  • Overall good, but...

Overall I like this app for workouts, but the app loses its utility if you can't set it down and just let it run. When you go to the lock screen, the alarm does not always function and may even exit the timer entirely. The same problem occurs of you switch out of the program, say to start or switch music. Since I want to use this on my daily interval run, it gets kind of annoying to realize you've dropped your timer entirely. Also, what's with the alarm volume being so quiet?

  • Can't switch screens w/o resetting workout

    1) If you go to the main menu (maybe to add another workout while in rest or walk mode) you can't resume-the workout resets. 2) can't add vibrate function which you need bc you can't hear the warning sounds 3) the counter pauses if you switch aps for a moment (like when I updated music or looked at a map). The timer updates when you switch back, but it doesn't set off the timer UNTIL you switch back. So you need to keep it open and you can accidentally reset it.

  • Good start

Once I turned my music way down I can here the alert. My guess is the app volume is constant. I too would love to see this as a user adjustable function

I notice a few reviews on multitasking and not see alerts. I experience this as well. In fact today I noticed if my iPhone goes into sleep mode I lose alerts. This causes the app to be a bigger battery drain than it needs to be

Please do not take these as gripes. I am grateful for the free app. I use it when running and do not look at the screen after I start my program, therefor sound is very important

  • The best configurable timer in iTunes

Great app! I gave my wife a Gymboss timer for Christmas and now I have it on my iPod Touch! For FREE even! I used it to configure the cardio workout per Body for Life.

Noticed on reviews in iTunes that some cannot hear the timer sounds through headphones. At first, I also experienced that problem. For some reason, now I don't.

Also related, some complained about not hearing the sounds when music is playing. I had the same problem, but once again, now I do not. Not sure what happened, but I can hear the sounds with my music.

There is a problem with it running in the background. It stalls when it gets to a new interval so I have to leave it running in the front at all times.

My wish list for this app would be:

    1. fix the multi-tasking problem
    2. ability to have and move several "rounds" not just one at the end
    3. better integration with playing music (adjustable volume or like another exercise app I found (and don't use), fades music down so you can hear the tone
    4. just a few more sounds would be nice

    And for even more development:

    5. have a voice that gives you how much time is left and be able to set that (start voice countdown with one minute left in interval and then every "x" seconds with "x" seconds to go)

This app is the best out there, I think, and is certainly the easiest in terms of configuring a routine. So, so easy to make your own routines. I tried all the free ones and you either can't do it or it is too complicated.

  • Awesome, especially for the price!

This app is great and does what it says. I have a few notes of constructive criticism, though.
    1) When in the background the timer will pause after completing the step it is on. It would be great if you could optionally have it continue in the background (reading a recipe, a book, etc.). Maybe even throw up an optional alert?
    2) The timer sounds are a bit quiet when listening to music simultaneously. Louder sound files, volume control, etc. would be nice. Also, it's not obvious but the sounds do not play in the headphones when the main iPhone 'mute' switch is on. Weird.
Otherwise, this is what great freeware is all about! Not even any annoying ads!
