Great in so many ways, spotty execution

This app has been amazing in helping our 4 year old learn to read. The games and exercises are engaging and well thought out. My son is definitely learning and enjoys it. Win!

Some things, especially after the last big release are not so hot. The animations for the listening exercises slowed down SO much! They add what feels like an extra 5 minutes to each day’s lesson. Worse, it gives him time for his attention to wander. Also, the scene building game at the end of each lesson is just broken. Plain broken- we can’t scroll after we put down the first picture.

Otherwise, we are quite happy with the app, though I do wish the exercises would challenge him a bit more. There’s a fine line between being easy enough to not get frustrated and challenging enough to make faster progress.

Expensive but good app

My daughter has been using this as a very beginner(to reading). She really enjoyed it for a while, but has quickly become too easy. I wish there was a way to skip ahead if the child finds a part too simple. To make it more challenging/more interesting.
She has now lost interest.
Very good app to start tho.

Disappointing update

I had finally found an app that was simple, that my daughter could use to help learn how to read, that was progressive, that I didn’t have to look over her shoulder and make sure she was doing something educational unlike ABC mouse which I found to be a mishmash of overstimulation but that has all changed with this update. I can no longer get to her to focus on one thing, she only wants to watch the videos, stories and play the games. Even the math section is just a total mess, when we first signed up, the app asked what reading skills she had but did nothing of the sort when they introduced math, the activities aren’t linear so she keeps doing the same activities that she enjoys instead of moving onto other ones, I can’t seem to find any parental controls in terms of what she has access to, how much time she spends on certain things... I literally cannot express how much I hate it.

Crashing with latest update

This app is great and my 3 year old son loves it. But with the most recent update it crashes after being open for a few minutes. I think I will cancel the £10 a month subscription until this is resolved because at the moment it’s unusable (I use a iPhone XR on latest OS).

Good app!

We have been using homer for almost a year now and I can say my son has absolutely been learning to read because of it. I love how easy it is to use and how clear the directions are, without a lot of distracting pictures or sounds like others learning apps that are difficult to follow for an early reader. I am thankful for the update as my son was getting bored with the same pictures, etc. My only couple of critiques with new update is that the little reader books on the learning pathway seemed to be timed after you tap the record button, so the recorded voice starts to play back before my son has finished reading the sentence. Prior to update you could tap record and drag your finger to follow the words until the end of the sentence (at your own pace). In addition, the new letter tracing lesson doesn’t offer any directions, which is different in the new update. Sometimes the lessons can be a bit repetitive and my son gets frustrated/bored, but we try to move through those ones faster so I can keep him interested. All in all it’s a good app we will continue using. He would not know what he knows now if we had not began using this app, so for that I am grateful!

It’s ok but not a full resource

It’s an ok app, but I don’t think I’ll be continuing after the free trial for a few reasons.

Firstly, my daughter just came back on to the app from earlier and it hasn’t saved her progress, so she’s not at all motivated to repeat work she’s already done.

Secondly, I have no idea who designed the letter formation but it’s terrible! You do not write an a by drawing a circle with a line on the side!! There’s no option for writing cursive either, which most schools teach from reception age.

Finally, unless I can’t find them, there are no resources for learning vowel blends! How you can learn to read without learning vowel blends is beyond me.

Shame as there’s some great, engaging activities that keep my daughter interested otherwise.

Disappointed

I have had the subscription for some time now, happy paying each month so that my child could have access to an interactive app as and when he chooses too. Some weeks he wouldn’t go onto it but I was ok with that. But I would encourage him. Most recent I cancelled the subscription, keeping in mind that the work he had achieved he could revisit. I was so annoyed and disappointed that all the activities he had previously completed he now can’t access! Purely because we cancelled the subscription. But we had rightly paid for that before hand! And now it’s not possible to access it! That’s disgusting! The past year wasted! As now all the learning journey he can’t access to refresh his mind. So wrong .. he should still be able to access the activities he has completed! I appreciate he can’t unlock new activities as the subscription is cancelled. But not to access what we have paid for is morally wrong!

Response from developer

Hi there! I'm so sorry for the confusion but when you are paying for a subscription you are paying for access to a product. You are not purchasing the product itself. This is true of all subscriptions within the Google Play Store. If you would like some more information, please email us at support@homerapp.com and we are happy to help.

Takes a while to open

Great app but sometimes it won’t open and I have to deleted it and download it again. For it to work I think needs a update besides that it’s amazing and my kids love it!!
