Lothian Buses/Edinburgh Trams User Reviews

Previous app peed all over this P.O.S.

This app is nowhere near as user friendly as the last one. Took the bus up town today and wish I’d brought the car. Can’t personalise my home or work like before. Three stops near my home and this POS only wants to use just one of them and there’s no way to see routes for the other stops.
I gave up my pass a while ago and started using the car again. The car gets 6 weeks diesel/mileage for the same price as a ridacard. Only difference, I’m now door to door, i don’t have to stand in filthy vandalised bus stops, I don’t have to put up with arrogance of drivers, the stench and noise from other passengers and this excrement app.

Overall an improvement, some features still missing

Overall I think this is an improvement over the old app (review Nov 2024) however it would be a good to see a couple of features from the old app added back in.

1. When opening the app it would be useful if my current location could be used to show bus times for the nearest stops rather than having to find them manually on the map

2. When clicking on a bus at a stop it would be useful to have the option to expand the map full screen rather than having it only occupy the top third of the screen

3. The setting to view the buses live on the map should be on by default where currently it is switched off. Many people won’t realise the functionality is still there.

Bring back the old app

What it says above.
The new one is less intuitive, less easy to navigate around and lacks the most useful functions of the old app such as 'take me to work'
The lookup function is awful. Start typing 'Waverley' and it offers you Waverley Bridge, Waverley Place but not Waverley Station. Start typing 'The Climbing Hangar' and it offers you the one in Liverpool, not the one in Edinburgh.
It looks awful, the functionality is terrible, it's a major step backwards and Lothian need to think again.

Often ending up paying twice for the same journey!

I give one star because I’ve had multiple frustrating experiences with Lothian Buses. Quite often, I end up paying twice for the same journey. I purchase my ticket through the app, but when I confirm the ticket, it often doesn’t load properly or doesn’t open. This means the driver can’t see a valid ticket, and I am asked to pay again. This is not only inconvenient but also unfair, as I already paid for my ride! It’s disappointing that such a simple issue with the app hasn’t been resolved, leaving customers paying extra unnecessarily.

Needs the features of the old app

It will he a fantastic app but It really does need the features of the old app such as "take me home" button, saved addresses, the ability to get to an address not a bus stop, the old app has the advantage over google maps or any other maps thanks to the live departure times even though google maps are almost getting there, this app's only advantage I see over maps or the old app is the ability to buy tickets... I can't find myself in this app compared to the old one...

Worse than the previous app

I only use this app to check live departures for my bus to and from work and this app feels like a massive step back in core functionality.
It looks and feels nicer but it just does not do the core job as well as the key app with more clicks needed to see when a bus is due and to map it from current location.
Feel like this is a few core updates away from being better and not just prettier.

Prefer old app

Just downloaded this as the old app says that it is being replaced. First thing I find is that to save stops you have to have an account and sign in - the old app you could just save them. That’s more of my privacy down the drain. Why do you need to sign in to save a stop?
Also you need to be zoomed in much more to see the bus stops on the map - not nearly so useful.

Producing the wrong ticket number

This is a decent app but on three different occasions now it has produced the incorrect four digit number when activating the day use ticket. The first two times the driver just let me in seeing the activate date was wrong. The third time the driver accused me of having the wrong ticket and that it wasn’t a real ticket because the number did not match his machine. This is a serious issue rendering the app useless and a waste of my day fare.

Pretty update but useless

This app is much more modern than the previous offering. I also appreciate the tickets being in one app.
BUT there’s no point in any of this if the bus times are unusable. The departure times aren’t presented in any recognizable order (I would expect it to be soonest to latest) and it leaves some departures out. This is unacceptable.
As an aside, it would be ideal to have trip planner default to current location for departure…

Far worse than previous app

A huge downgrade - where to start with this disaster of an app... Compared to the previous app this one has: tiny unreadable font; buses without a direction arrow (OK they have a teeny-weeny thing but you cannot really see it); a map that occupies only a tiny part of the screen; routes that show end-to-end rather than the section you are on, so you always have to zoom. Tracking is still worse than it used to be: you can watch a bus approaching in the app but will have already missed it - tracking lags by a couple of stops, generally. We used to have wonderful buses in Edinburgh, until they started downgrading everything.
