  • Great, but annoying bugs not fixed for years

I reported some bugs to the dev years ago and they acknowledged it. Time goes by, new releases get all the new marketable features, but minor yet super annoying issues are still here. If you travel between the US and the rest of the world, your weights will not get actually converted when you switch the units back and forth: the numbers stay the same, only the units name change. This used to work fine before, but stopped at some point years ago. I am now permanently in Europe and have to calculate all my weighs from kgs each session to input them in lbs the app. There used to be an export function which allowed to download the data, which I could use to recalculate myself and reimport the weighs, but that is gone now with iCloud sync, which is a significant regression on its own. The other bug is with Apple Watch: if you have a Quick Menu configured to show next set and edit previous, it will NOT let you edit previous set if it was the last one in workout. You have to finish the workout and edit that last set by hand. I progress with each workout (Hepburn Method), so I have to do it each time. These aren’t big deals to be fixed, but somehow after 4 years or so they’re still here. I even inquired about them again just a month or two ago and got no response whatsoever.

  • Bummed.

I’ve used this app since 2018 and was completely enthralled by how user friendly it was and how easy it was to track your workouts. I absolutely loved the feature where they created a workout for you based off of your regenerated muscles and created an hour long workout session that was unique and different than the last workout. Unfortunately I have stopped using it (still paying for it cause I’m hoping it will magically go back to its former glory) because when I ask the app to generate workouts it always gives one actual workout and then the rest are 15 min stretches or cardio or rope workouts that I don’t want. I wanted it to give the hour workout with actual exercises and it doesn’t do that anymore. I’m not sure if it’s a setting I somehow chose or what but it’s very disappointing not being able to have workouts generated that are more than three 15 min stretches or rope workouts for an intended 45 min lift. Very sad about the change and wish I could have the old version back.

  • The Best

I very rarely leave feedback, but wanted to thank the developer with a 5-star review. I have downloaded dozens of weight-tracking apps. And I’ve even paid for multiple. None come close to the functionality that is built into this great app. A few of the things I love include Apple Watch integration, live tracking of heart rate, ability to easily customize weight and sets during workouts, the customizable pause settings between sets, the visual interface of the Apple Watch app, the visual interface of the avatars that actually represent your body weight, the tracking of past workouts on the phone, and the ability to copy/paste sets and weight information easily. And on top of all that, all data is synced to the cloud and across multiple devices. There are only a few things I would like to see added. It would be nice to be able to see history on the Apple Watch app. I would like more “recommended” workout routines that are customized to you and progressively change weights over time (like in the Workout App). And it would also be nice to have a “lifetime” subscription option (like in the Workout App). But I won’t take off a star for any of those because this is truly a best-in-class app. Thanks again to the talented developer!

  • Premium Subscription Review

I have had the premium subscription for months, and recently took time to tediously create a new routine and add it into this app. It was working nicely until today, I went to do one of my new workouts and it says “upgrade to premium” on all the exercises except one. I have premium, so I closed out and reopened a few times, and checked my subscriptions in settings. Nothing worked, so I canceled my subscription. It says I still have for another week, but I still can’t see the exercises. This is actually the second time this happened, the first time I thought I must have cancelled it mistakenly and didn’t think anything of it, and I guess it fixed itself somehow. I don’t know. But, don’t waste your money on premium, because it’s very frustrating when you go to track a pod for workout, and you can’t see any of the sets you had taken time to plan.

I would give 0 or 1 star, but besides this issue I really liked the app.

  • Excellent with Apple Watch

This is the best workout companion for the Apple Watch. I used it without a subscription for a year and was happy with the limited exercises available. I just got the subscription and am happier now that I can create more interesting workouts. I don’t go to the gym anymore so it’s my home workout motivation tool.

The latest update made a great app even better! The Apple Watch now shows heart rate in an easy to read bar format and I don’t know what else I can say. I’ve been using it for a couple years and don’t have any problems using it. If you have an Apple Watch and you’re thinking about trying another workout app, I would pause and try Gymaholic first. for me, the developers are very responsive in answering my emails and making bug fixes.

  • Please don’t let the app die!

I’ve used this app for a looong time (original Pro user). I use it for keeping track of all my strength training needs and I have many customs workouts made throughout the years. The UI design, functionality and aesthetics are really unrivaled by any other Apple Watch workout app available. This is why it saddens me greatly to see the app seemingly abandoned by the developer. Last update was over a year ago, and we used to get updates often. Writing a review like this is the only thing I can do, and hope. I truly believe this app is best-in-class and it should live on, because there is nothing else out there now for the Apple Watch that hits all the marks this one does: performance, design, ease and capabilities.

  • Best overall weight training app on the planet!

I have downloaded at least 10 lifting apps in the past 3 years, and Gymaholic is by far the easiest to use, easiest to adjust to whatever type of program you’re running (Powerlifting, Bodybuilding, functional, etc). The premium features are way worth the price (which if you compare to Fitbit, Strava, Wahoo, Gymkeeper, GreySkull, or Stronglifts 5x5 it’s cheaper!!!).
This app has a boatload of exercises pre-loaded, but if you want to add one that’s not on the list, it’s a piece of cake. You can even snap a picture of the exercise from the internet and add it to exercise description!!! I haven’t seen anything like it!
You can adjust rest times on the fly, be notified when rest time is over, it’s fantastic!
The augmented reality feature is wicked cool, because it will tell you when each muscle group is ready to rock again after self-adjusted or recommended rest days! I will never use another app!

  • Can a longer switch between metric and imperial

I used to be able to switch between metric and imperial units back-and-forth when traveling between Europe and the USA. However, there’s no way to do that anymore: you can still switch units in the settings, but the weight amounts are no longer converted, which results in completely messed up workout log. Contacted with the developer about it, but they said that he was never even possible, which is completely puzzling, because as I said, it used to just work.

As of iOS16, Apple Watch app is messed up, too, with countdown timer working erratically, sometimes skipping pauses or not starting the clock at all. App hasn’t been updated in 9 months, I think it’s time to move on. Which is a pity, cause it was nearly perfect. If this is abandonware, I wish the developers at least considered opensourcing the app.

  • Love this app

I originally bought this back in October 2020 as a way to prove to my Doctor that I am using the gym. Now 6 months later I’ve really learned to appreciate this app and all it has to offer. I love the history and personal records. The price is very acceptable at a few bucks a month for Premium.
One thing I’d like to see is the ability to add other exercises based off one that’s already in here. For example I like the ez bar skull crusher exercise for triceps. Another variation is with dumbbells. It would be nice to have that as a choice rather than typing a “Dumbell” note with the exercise. Maybe you choose and exercise then choose what type of equipment your using. Tricep extensions is a great example. You can do those with kettlebells, cable, dumbbells, bands etc. Instead of scrolling looking for the name, maybe just choose the exercise then the equipment.

  • Good but falls short in too many ways

    The good:
Great exercise variety and the animations are the best I’ve seen on any app.

    The bad:
1- ZERO customer support, you’ll never get a reply to an email.
2- ZERO tutorials or an FAQ on how to use the tools.
3- Glitchy exchange of data between devices. If you workout at the gym and use your phone, the HISTORY data will not transfer back to your tablet.
4- My monthly subscription on the tablet wasn’t recognized on the phone, so I had to uninstall and reinstall the app on my phone. So I lost all my previous workout data.
5- the 1RM max calculator is GARBAGE. Once you go over 10 reps on a set it’s useless. High rep sets aren’t even close to realistic. My 220lb 1RM on a 30 rep set says my 1RM is 564lbs.
6- no continuity on calculating volume from one exercise to the next. A set of DB presses 60 per hand, 120 total registers as a 240 lb lift. Meanwhile, a cable crossover using 30 lbs per hand registers as a 60 lb lift. What’s worse, a single dumbbell lift like a DB pullover for chest counts volume as if you used 2 dumbbells. So a 60 lb lift calculates as if you lifted 120.

Can’t make this stuff up. And the kicker is when you email them about the blatant flaws in their design, you get crickets as a response. My best guess is the designer isn’t a weight lifter.
