  • Livescribe... So much promise

Pencast support needs work guys - A Pencast recording in progress shouldn't be lost if a phone call comes in...
  • Good but not Great - yet

I've used the Echo for years and was very excited when this was announced. It works well, but there are some serious issues that keep this from being perfect:

1). Audio recordings are lost if there is a phone call or the phone is locked/unlocked

2). Once a section is deleted it is wiped and there is no undo. So one is stuck with written notes in the book without any digital version (ideally the app should do versioning)

3). Once I lost a major section of text (deleted), I tried to recreate it with Edit. It was a pain and there was no way to move the new edited section back into position. Editing and formatting need to be improved.

    4) Audio is ONLY possible when paired with the app running on an iDevice. There is no way to record a meeting with notes and then sync the notes and audio afterward.

There is a lot to like in this initial release (and I can see a lot of opportunities for new features down the road), but for myself I will need to stick with my Echo pen a bit longer until these issues are resolved.

  • Auto-lock must be fixed

Livescribe has promised that losing your recording when iphone locks will be fixed soon. I hope this means by the end of 2013. Imagine if the recording function was built into the pen itself and the recordings froze all the time... There would be outrage and the product would flop. This is no different. Not only do they need to prevent files from being deleted during auto-lock but recordings should CONTINUE. Asking me to change two settings on the phone every time I want to record for more than a minute (to prevent incoming call and remove auto-lock) is at least one too many. I can live with preventing incoming calls (if I know that when forgetting to do so recordings would be aborted but not deleted if someone calls) but not changing auto-lock as well. I know that other apps can handle this (e.g. Super Note). Please fix this by end of year.

  • Easy Peasy

Took a sec to figure out how to turn it on but once on, launch app and away I went. You have to use special paper and order it from Livescribe but other than that start writing and instantly the app has an exact representation of my handwriting. How did it do that? Who know’s but it’s trick. Much easier than trying to write on my iPad directly. You can even erase what you write. Freaky. There’s no user manual so I’m figuring out new stuff each time I fire it up. Kinda like one of those Russian Dolls, keep on opening and there’s something else there.

  • Life’s good

My high school gave all students iPads this semester. We have standardized on Noteability for all of our note taking. We can store notes in it but all our teachers make us still write stuff. My dad got me this pen and already it has helped me. All my written notes easily go into Noteability and I can annotate, highlight and do all the things that I need to do. If I do not want to use notability the Livescribe app captures all my handwriting and the audio from my lectures. I can play these back to review my classes. I love the stylus at the end of the pen. Now I don’t have to have a pen and a stylus. Installation was simple and easy. Go Bells, Go Livescribe

  • The written word is back!

Finally! Handwriting has caught up to the 21st century!

So I like to write, a LOT. Like little phone numbers, addresses, reminders, misc tidbits. While my iPhone and iPad make it easy to jot down information, I still prefer to write with a pen. Now, I do not have to tow stickies around with me or open up my journal anymore. Instead, I defer to my iPhone and iPad and my Livescribe 3 Pen. I turn on my pen and write away. No confirmations or extra button presses.

The app itself can do tons of cool things. Not only does it keep EVERYTHING i write organized on my iPad, but it allows me to perform actions like recording audio in sync with my pen strokes, or even allow me to share my notes through text and email. Oh, and I LOVE the transcription. I have weird handwriting and the app still converts it to text with almost 100% accuracy.

With that said there are some anomalies with the app. Once in a while the snippets (notes sorted by time and location on the page) have weird zooms, and I’m not a big fan of the menu colors. The pen and app just came out though, so I’m sure Livescribe will touch up the App soon enough.

Overall I’m very pleased with the experience. I’m ecstatic that I can finally keep all my writing with me everywhere I go. If you like to write half as much as I do, I highly recommend it!
