Duolingo isn’t even on the same planet as Chinese Skill

I started on Duolingo and then bought this: it is better in every way. Where Duolingo doesn’t explain what any word means, this app explains literally and colloquial uses. Duolingo has some hanzi but it is separate from the lessons. Here, you learn hanzi along with pinyin and word definitions and structures. Not only that, with each hanzi you learn through beautiful animation the words are pictures representing something. I basically use Duolingo to track my progress and get reminders to practice every day, then hop over here to get real work done. I bought the unlimited version (don’t remember) and I’d say it’s a steal of a deal.

This is the only Chinese app you’ll need!!

Way better than anything else!

I’ve tried other apps such as rosetta stone and duolingo, but chinese skill is so much more imtuitive, and starts with basic words but quickly builds on them to help you learn long sentence structure to speak much more naturally and grow faster, instead of just isolated words and verbs. It also gives tons of example videos of different Chinese people speaking what you’re trying to learn. Has voice recognition to grade your speech and tone use. And has superb videos from Kyle Strickland expanding on what you’ve learned, and going ack over the tone pronunciation slowly of the sentences you’ve started to learn, for reinforcement. Absolutely the best app for Mandarin! Wish they had one for Taiwanese Hokkien (Tai Gui), which my wife and in-laws speak way more than Mandarin.

Great App, highly recommend

I have to say, I am incredibly impressed with how well this app is put together. I asked ChatGPT to find me apps that are free that would help me learn Mandarin, this one came up, and it was the first I tried.

This is my first effort to honestly try a new language. I know some Spanish, and would like to get better, but really wanted to learn Mandarin for a long list of reasons.

Mandarin is not easy, very different from English, and this app does an amazing job breaking down the language. I’m genuinely surprised at how much easier it is to learn than I thought it would be. I am just scratching the surface, but I can see myself picking this up in a few months and being able to hold a conversation.

I anticipate having to pay for the entire app, and I’m quite certain I’ll make the leap. This app is extremely well put together. Very impressive, and incredibly thoughtful. Wish I would’ve gone to school in China if this is how they teach lessons over there 😂

My only suggestion, add in male voices, (this may already be in the paid version). I’m a mid 30s year old male with a deep voice, and knowing how important the annunciation of each word in Mandarin can be, especially with an American accent, I want to make sure I am putting an emphasis on each word correctly, and I don’t want to learn Mandarin, but have to speak it in a dainty female voice because that’s all I know 😂😂😭😭

good app but every time i try a lesson a deal will show up and it wont let me do the lesson.

你好, 我名字 Matt， This app is far superior to DuoLingo which is suppose to be more popular… and that said, better made. But no, there is a lot more of explanations in this one which is a big lack in DuoLingo. Highly recommend. I use it with HelloChinese and they complete each others. Just perfect.
