Great business….for them. BE AWARE!
Been doing property maintenance for years. Decided to try Thumbtack as I hired a drywaller(terrible outcome) to finish a project quicker. Decided I could do a better job and fill my empty time between jobs and to make some extra cash. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR CREDIT CARD. I was expecting $5-$7 charge per customer until payment time comes for a job and they take a few percent for total payment. A caulking job and moving some mulch for an hour was a $38 lead charge. Their prices are OUTRAGEOUS and they charged 4 OTHER “PROS”. Thumbtack made more off lead charges to four professionals than the job cost total to the homeowner. The homeowner didn’t know what was wrong. I wasn’t going to sit there for 4 hours doing nothing to make up the difference. It took 12 minutes to fix the issues but got charged $38 JUST BECAUSE THEY MESSAGED ME. I refuse to scam the customer and ate the charge. I lost money on the deal because the owner thought it would be a half days worth of work and thumbtack charged me for that. This is a total scam. Great hustle for them, they will be sued within a year and fold until Angie’s List or Zillow buys them for pennies on the dollar. Throw a few bucks into ads on Facebook groups or flyers on the telephone poles and you will make 10x more. Old ladies needing a toilet fix or gutters cleaned dont use apps like this anyway. Word of mouth may be slow, but won’t cost you $245 a week for 1-2 extra jobs.
