  • best encrypted email service

Yeah, yeah--I've experienced some of the little glitches in this (free for "regular" version) email service, but I've no doubt this very impressive company--I read much about Tutanota--will (or probably already had) fixed them.

Most important, I used Protonmail (perhaps Tutanota's best-known encrypted email provider) for quite a while--until I learned that Protonmail received a $2 million investment by a large U.S. company that seeks a "strong *ownership* stake" in the smaller companies it funds.

And as we know, Edward Snowden clued us in about US-owned companies being coerced into providing "backdoors"/intentionally compromising their own encryption measures, to allow government surveillance.

So, not being able to trust Protonmail any longer, I switched to Tutanota, which has never accepted (to my, or it seems anyone else's) knowledge such alarming start-up funding.

I find Tutanota's service exceptional, and I like it's pleasant/modern/~minimalist interface. I even entrust Tutanota with my domain/business email account. It's simply a great, trustworthy encrypted-email company that is responsive to user feedback and support queries.

  • Love it with one exception..

I really love this app BUT there is one thing I absolutely dislike about it - the delete function. You have to swipe, hold and then release for it to delete. I understand this may be a safety measure to ensure you don’t delete anything accidentally but it’s very clunky and unnecessary. I could just as easily go recover it from trash and would rather do so. I have to attempt to delete an email 3-5 times before it actually does, I swipe and hold and it constantly just slides out from under my finger even if I’m trying to hold it in place so that I have to keep trying until it finally deletes. I spend more time trying to delete emails than anything else. I absolutely HATE the delete function. If not for that I’d rate 5 stars for sure.

  • ProtonMail has a much better UI

I tried both TutaNota and ProtonMail when shopping for an encrypted email service, but decided to go with ProtonMail due to their vastly superior UI. In the TutaNota app, emails are never scaled down for my screen size, so I’m forced to scroll the viewport back and forth horizontally to read anything. This for me makes the app almost unusable, and as someone who does most of their email on a mobile device, I needed a better solution. From what I can tell the service they provide is good but the app just isn’t there yet.

  • Good, but could be better

The iOS client is still using its old, slow version, but that is still in beta, so it’s understandable. That said, in both versions, it’s way too difficult to mark senders/domains as spam. The best version requires you to copy the sender/domain, click Settings, click Global Settings, click “Show” next to Spam rules, click the “+” symbol, paste the user/domain, click the pencil, changing it fro “No spam” to “Always Spam” or “Discard,” and then clicking “OK.” That is an unacceptable amount of steps for what should be a very simple task.

Also, despite being on the iPhone for more than three years, there is still no TouchID, meaning that if your phone is unlocked, either you have to enter in what should be a complex password every time you open the app, OR just forgo additional security entirely.

The longer these issues persist, the more tempted I am to experiment with Protonmail, as I know through a friend that both of these issues are addressed. Tutanota Premium is significantly cheaper at 1€ per month, versus Protonmail’s 4€ per month, but that will only get one so far before the long-lived problems just aren’t worth the savings.

  • Could be just a little faster

Tutanota as a service is great, and after correcting the server flaws which caused the app to freeze it's quite pleasant to use in the iPhone.

Still, it could be just a little faster when updating the inbox and showing mail. It's not an unbearable speed tough.

Also the default option of blocking images could be adapted so that trusted contacts would dismiss the need for constantly allowing pictures. On low quality networks (mostly nearly out of wifi range) this actually ends up preventing the download of images even after the button is pressed, and the program must be reopened to fix it.

  • Limited but growing feature list.

Beyond the laudable feat of designing a slick app which secures the encryption keys within the user browser, rather than the company server, the app offers limited functionality. Yes, user can password protect emails to third parties (on the basis of a pre shared secret) but basic functions like searching for emails in your inbox, or even a draft folder are missing (update- draft folder is now available, though one still can't search through the mailbox)

One major issue that should be addressed is the excessive time the app often takes to log into the service. I presume this has something to do with the (in app) encryption process but it should be cut down for a speedy log in.

One hopes the team will build on this solid foundation with better features, until which, serious email users may be reluctant to adopt TUTANOTA as their primary email service.

They also now have fresh competition in this vertical from ProtonMail (which has gone out of BETA recently).

  • Secure email is finally here!

If you're the kind of person that values privacy and secure online communications, then look no further than Tutanota! I replaced my complicated, cluttered and troublesome hotmail account for a beautifully simple and secure Tutanota account and could not be happier! I was able to choose a much simpler domain name and can rest easy knowing that all of my contacts, emails and data is securely encrypted. Tutanota is the most simple, reliable and secure email service I have ever used and I strongly recommend it to everyone. I don't know how I ever lived without it :-)
