  • I like privacy, but the app needs help

I like knowing that Tutanota is making my emails secure, but functionally, the app needs some help. Basic functions like deleting emails crashes the app. I’ve been suffering with this issue for a while and they keep coming out with updates so I keep hoping it will be fixed but so far no fix. I also really wish there was a simple undo button. I’ve accidentally moved/deleted an email before and because I wasn’t sure which one specifically got deleted I had to go digging through the trash to see which email wasn’t supposed to be there.

  • Waste of my time

I did everything to sign up and wrote down their huge long recovery key, I made a password that I’m very familiar with and then was told I had to wait 48 hours. And then I got something that just showed for a minute saying, I had to write the Admins to verify something, but could not find or see that again. Then I went to try to send myself an email to test it and it sent one with a big long script saying about how it’s an encrypted email that was being sent to blah blah blah and I clicked on the link to open it and it said I had to put in the agreed-upon password?? I put in the password I made with the company and it said “invalid credentials”. Tried several times knowing it’s the correct one and it said “invalid credentials”. So then I went to “recover the account” since I couldn’t see what else there was to do and change the password, and it said the big, huge long string of recovery I had to enter was AGAIN “invalid credentials”. Gave up and deleted the app, and hopefully was able to disconnect the account.. Waste of my time!

Thank you for rating our secure email app. The waiting period is only necessary if you register via a shared IP such as a VPN (spammers try to abuse them). Hope you understand, mainly because we allow registrations without phone numbers. With Tutanota you can subscribe privately and anonymously! Please contact us at hello@tutao.de so we can fix the issue with your new account!
  • Great Email For Privacy

I started using the free version of Tutanota back in 2019 or so; it is fully functional app that will give you the ability to send emails to other Tutanota users with secure encryption. It is also a usable email address for unencrypted emails as well. I only use two email addresses now: iCloud, and Tutanota. Websites with troll concerns may not let the usual Gmail and iCloud emails to be used, but they will allow Tutanota - and I’m grateful for that. ☮️❤️

  • I’ve had it.

Tutanota touts itself as a privacy service with its encrypted email but when you register over VPN (privacy) you’ll be faced with a summons to the principals office to talk one on one before you can even send one email. Once past that glaring contradiction you’ll see that Tutanota falls short as far as features go when compared against the likes of Protonmail which offers a great deal more. Tutanota is rudimentary, austere. It’s the nerds email prison. Protonmail for example allows colored Labels in addition to folders that make sorting and linking emails a breeze. Tuta on the other hand has been promising labels were coming for too long now and still hasn’t delivered. Examples like this abound. Perhaps if Tuta spent less effort micromanaging it’s user base they’d have enough time to work on improving their product offering. I’ve paid for both services for about as far back as they go and to me it’s clear Protonmail is the choice going forward.

Hi there, we're sorry that it's difficult to sign up a VPN. As spammers try to abuse VPNs for mass sign-ups, we occasionally need to block certain connections for signing up. Please keep trying with a different connection. Unfortunately, there is no other way as we do not ask for any identifying information such as phone numbers. If registration keeps failing (also with your home IP - we do not log IPs), please contact us so we can fix this: hello@tutao.de
  • Great service for E2E encryption.

I still use the free service and its fantastic. I could certainly use the added features of a paid plan, and its not expensive. I just cant do it. I still use other free services for normal email but when it comes to personal data or login/password confirmation, Tutanota is the only way to go. If I could setup the account to remove sensitive data and forward to my gmail I would have the perfect setup. Probably could with a paid plan, but having to use their client is a small price to pay for peace of mind. And that they are doing the tech heavy-lifting saves me time and resources

Thanks again for providing one of the truely top notch free internet services.

  • Keyboard support lacking

I love the service but keyboard support is lacking for Mac and iPad. The problem is that the “del” on the Apple iPad keyboard or the MacBook laptop keyboard maps to the “backspace” key. In practice this means that on the MacBook laptop keyboard you have to hit Fn-Del to delete a message. On the iPad, since the Apple Magic Keyboard does not provide a function key, you can not delete message from the keyboard.

I’ve requested this directly from Tutanota support. The issue was acknowledged but no commitment to fix the issue.

Thanks for your feedback, I'll ping the development team again about this. Please note that you can also swipe messages on your iPad for quick deletion. Hope this helps for the time being!
  • Excellent App

I have been a paying customer for 4 years now. I joined after my privacy came into question with another service. There are so many benefits to this service it is incredible. Sure, services like this can be really frustrating for people that don’t understand their uses, but it is worth it when you really want some privacy.

The app itself is great on the whole. Pinching would be nice to blow up/shrink text, but that is minor to me. It would be nice to have the “Save credentials” checkbox farther away from the login, but again, this is minor.

For me, there are three things that would make this service itself second to none for years into the future. These are nit-picky because I know they are working through post quantum encryption. First, give the ability to have all incoming messages converted to plain text; yes, I understand that this may cause us to lose some content, but that may be worth it, especially late at night in the comfort of my bed. Second, give the ability to set a mono space font as default and the ability to use colored/highlighted text; the lack of coloring/highlighting can be a major inconvenience when I really need it. And third, the ability to send a self-destructing message. I don’t need it often, but an encrypted message that I know can then be destroyed would be the best piece of mind.

  • What happened?

Seriously, the email app was good. I was just getting ready to switch all my stuff from Google, and now every time it checks for mail, it’s reading unread mail as new. Seriously? I shouldn’t have to read every single email to clear a number on the screen. If I open the app, it should be enough to clear the numbers. I was thankful for the privacy. Still am, but if it behaves as if mail is new when it’s not, I’ll have to keep looking. If you’re not bothered by this it’s still a great app for privacy concerns because it costs nothing. For me, I actually will pay something for one a bit better, at least for a phone. Zooming is a complete pain, now this.

Thanks for your feedback. You can zoom with a double-tap, we will see how we can improve this further! BTW: 4.75 is closer to 5 than to 4, would be nice if you could update your rating. ;)
  • Can’t read email on mobile app because font is too small

First, I am a paying user and think you have an excellent service, so I’m rating your mobile app not your service. Even after the most recent update for mobile the font is still too small and hard to read. I’ve used other email mobile apps and never had this issue so I know it is possible. Is there a reason why when I open an email on my phone the font has to be so small? Another reviewer asked the same question and recommended adding the ability to be able pinch and zoom out to manually enlarge the text. Your response was to double tap on the screen to make the font bigger. Well, unfortunately that makes the font too big for the screen (I have a large screen) and then you have to constantly scroll back and forth on the screen to read an email. The solution would be for the font to be the correct size and be readable when I open an email without having to double tap because that creates another issue as I pointed out. It’s the small attention to details that can set you apart from the rest of the field.

  • Secure your data today with Tutanota!

I’ve been a Tutanota premium customer since 2014 and they’ve become my primary email provider. I love knowing that my communications are private and that my data isn’t being sold for a profit. Remember, when a product is free, it’s because you’re the product, and that’s why I’m happy to pay $1/month for Tutanota Premium. The service has matured wonderfully over the last 8 years since I originally signed up and is better than ever! Highly recommend for anyone who’s privacy minded and sick of being sold to advertisers, or just wants to encrypt their email communications
