Fabulous example of Open Source

I’m a huge fan of OsmAnd. I’ve been using it for a few months now, mainly for navigation on my motorcycle on green roads and dirts tracks in Europe and North Africa.

I love that it is both extremely configurable to my needs and has an active community who collaborate on making constant improvements. The more I get involved, the greater I can ensure the app meets my needs.

Complicated licensing

Why do almost all sat Nav apps have such complex licensing? I have no idea which bits to buy, what the cost will be, so I won’t bother.

You can get "Maps+" as a one-time in-app purchase or annual subscription to get unlimited map downloads and updates, terrain maps, CarPlay support and mostly all the main features. As a lover of maps and mapping I always try out various apps to see what features are out there BUT at the end of each day I always return to OsmAnd+ and have done for many many years 👍

I don’t understand the high rating

The directions feature just doesn’t work. I can’t use it to find my work or home addresses.

Good maps for hiking. Support issues, but sorted

I do like using it. I wad subscribed to maps+ but when they had a 50% sale on the one off cost I wanted to change to that. Impossible - doesn’t give you the option because you’ve got a current subscription active. Support was useless. Kept repeating that it DOES work and that I just needed to follow the instructions, even though I provided screenshots showing the issue, they just kept repeating that the option was there. Now the sale has ended and I’ve missed out.

Update: in the end I did manage to work things out with support, though it took some time. From what I understand, a current subscription stops you from being able to purchase the one time version, though the app doesn’t tell you that. Anyways they did sort out my issues and I’m a happy user again so put it up to 5 stars from my previous 2.

Infuriating to use and set up preferences.

I wasn't able to change the voice permanently to Ava from the default Samantha (Spoken Content nor Speech in iOS). It would revert back. The map danced like crazy when I was stationary. The sheer amount of options and the way to get to them was too convoluted for me. Why so many profiles? Why are the menus so deep and repeat themselves in different places? Why do I have to manually set the same settings for each profile? I don't mind buying maps, but not in this state of user unfriendliness.

Hello! Thank you for the feedback. We will check voice applying. You can set Map orientation in Menu - Settings – Profile – General settings. You can disable unused profiles. We have plans to add copying part of the settings from one profile to another. If you have any other questions please contact us at support@osmand.net

Getting there with the app

I just need to play with it more . Not just use it in a hurry when I’m in the car with CARPLAY… I have to think like the app.

Spend 30 mins downloading map to try

Issues:
- you have to download your country map to even use the app which is a manual task you have to figure out then wait 30 mins for the 200mb map to download.
- you can search for businesses but not actual addresses. I tried their suggestion of menu-search-address-select city but that didn’t work either

I can’t get past these to even test the app better. Happy to change the rating of I’m writing but it should be as easy to use as Google or why bother

the BEST map, especially for cycling!!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO THE CREATORS!!!! I never write reviews but I was just completely floored by this app that I just had to! I have been searching and trying every map for cycling but NOTHING has suited me as much as Osmand has.

I love that I can ride and not have to constantly be touching the screen to adjust my navigation/location, it just follows me everywhere and I can focus on the roads! This app is just a bundle of surprises because that's not all that it offers, there is SO much customisation and I have everything that I could need in a map- from the interface, type of map, icon screenview, if I want to see how much time/mileage left I have in my journey, it even has other vehicle options- even walking!

The only downside I can think of is the transportation, as the app cannot sync to London Bus or Train times due to copyright, you have to use another app for that. But apart from that (which is the smallest blip) I am IN LOVE with this app!!!
Get it and have fun with it!! ^_^
