OsmAnd Maps Travel & Navigate User Reviews

Top reviews

Essential.

A long-time review that’s very deserving: I’ve used this app for three bicycle tours (ie. wilderness) over 7 years and its never let me down. Its fast and precise at loading open source data, views, highlights, ways of navigating. The GUI is clear and keeps things simple when dealing with these levels of granularity. A special delight it loading geo-located Wikipedia articles. Route-mapping is infinitely better than Google, Apple etc. I basically would’ve been in a bad spot many a time without it. Big respect to the devs and people designing this; online mapping seeks to reduce the world to tarmac-roads-and-businesses-you-can-visit, this app exposes all the complexity and beauty of it. Thanks!

OSM is free...

I don’t like being charged for something that is free. Something that I contributed to.
People submit things to OSM under the impression that it will not cost any money for others to use. So why are you making me pay for “unlimited map updates”? It shouldn’t cost you any money at all for server hosting or anything like that. OpenStreetMap has their own.

Great features and actively developed

Excellent open source tool. Loving the OsmAnd Live option to straight away have the daily changes from OpenStreetMap - including my edits -, which ends up being way more up to date than Google Maps for some parts of the world.
The search could be better as it doesn’t always find what I’m looking for.
Go Open Data! :)
Thank you to the developers.

Doesn’t support family sharing

The app itself seems good and does come recommend. It does not however support family sharing as it says it does. Each family member need their own subscription which completely voids the point of family sharing.

Response from developer

Hello! Thank you for the feedback. Apple doesn't allow to share in-app purchases and subscriptions through Family Sharing https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203046.

Not good for navigation

I had high hopes for this app and it’s great for some things, but the navigation features need a lot of work.
I wanted to plan a route but when I try to add points it keeps snapping back to my current location.
I tried turning on the “simulate route” feature hoping it would allow me to plan without snapping, but instead it snaps and simulates that I’m driving the route. Imagine that... I guess I’m just stupid to think it was something else. All good though, I just turn off simulate and start over, right? Wrong. It continues to simulate even after I kill the navigation and start all over and turned off that feature.
For map downloads and gpx overlay it works, but for now it’s too buggy and cumbersome for anything else.
If it becomes more intuitive and less buggy then I’ll happily revisit and expand my usage.

Hello! Thank you for the feedback. You can set any point as starting for navigation, after that it wasn't snapping back to the location. Please try to update to the latest 3.12 version, we made some improvements to navigation, we added Route details screen with route statistic and now you can export the route as GPX. We are planning to add Route planning option in future updates.

Doesn't allow updating of maps

This app doesn't seem to allow updating of offline map data that's kept on the phone. To get a refreshed version of the map you already have on the phone requires to delete the map, subscribe to the mailing list before you are allowed to download the same location of the map with data more recent than 6 months old. Updating the map failed at 60% , if you have Apple or Google maps don't waste your time with this

Getting there

Interface is clunky, search is pretty terrible and requires a lot of manual input, and it doesn’t know all the shortcuts Google maps has, but has a lot of helpful features and doesn’t provide Google with a complete record of your movements.

Pretty good app, but some error with GPX

When I import GPX file from email into OSM everything is good. But the weight of lines is very thick and I can not find the way to adjust their weight. It would be better if you improve this mising. Thanks.

OK but some features not working on iOS

I did a lot of research looking for an app to give turn by turn navigation especially when following an existing gpx route.
Planning ahead to my summer trip to France I thought I would use OSMAnd to take part of an existing French national veloroute which passed where I am staying. I followed all the stages suggested by the support pages but when it came to save the route I had taken hours designing (whilst learning how to use the app) the option does not seem to work. You are supposed to touch(click) on the route distance/time summary within navigation to bring up the route info including elevation (essential when you are planning cycling/hiking routes) and save from that page.
The route info page does not show at all, can’t save my route and have wasted hours trying not to loose all the work I put in... very annoying
