The Author app is really minimalistic and simple — what every app should be however they manage to clutter the interface time and time again. It has many built-in functions especially the mapping feature which sets the standards.
At the beginning, it may seem confusing to do anything, however, after reading the user guide many issues have been solved. Really thorough and concise user guide.

Author a disenthralling word processing app!
The power lies in the simplicity and integration of this application. I can, at a click of a button, focus on writing a specific paragraph freeing me from any distractions on screen. The map view lets me freely mind-map my ideas instead of tabbing into another app and write all in the same workspace. In full screen view I can make instant notes in the magic margin, again saving time. Author provides the user with a quick citation function, reducing formatting time. What’s even more remarkable is how it all works seamlessly together (Author-Reader-Liquid). Author is a must purchase app for anyone who writes. I highly recommend! 5*

An incredibly useful and enjoyable writing tool. Simply outstanding. And I would say this even before the recent updates, which now include a type of concept mapping functionality...which is, for my work, an un-looked-for win!

Great for academics!
Author is a well-crafted and interesting program! I'm an academic who's been looking for a word processor that can handle shorter pieces. I use Microsoft Word for papers, but I find it a clunky tool for outlining or composing brief essays meant to sharpen my own understanding of a concept.
Author has a beatiful interface; easy to use; automatically tracks citations. And its incorporation of Engelbart's thinking makes it immensely promising. Use it in conjunction with Reader! I can't wait to see how both applications develop.

5 star potential, but partner app holds it back
I was so excited about the potential of this as a researcher. When the PDF is opened properly, the copy/paste works beautifully. A video or update to the manual would be helpful to explain how to efficently add quotations, etc. The only downside is the issues with the partner app 'Reader' not opening all articles in the proper format to facilitate using the quotation feature meaningfully. If they could fix those issues, this app will be the mainstay of every graduate student. I will keep watching for updates to fix these issues (and will cross my fingers for wishlist items like an ipad version with icloud integration and EndNote integration). I added a star because the first version of this review did have more comments about Reader app, and because I'm impressed (and hopeful for the app) by the responsiveness of the developers to comment on the reviews.

Thank you for your extensive comments. The copy and past works from Reader to Author if the PDF in Reader has Visual-Meta attached. That can be automatically done if the PDF has a DOI, in which case Reader resolves it into Visual-Meta. This is definitely not ideal, we agree. Please don’t forget that Author is the writing tool and Reader is the reader, so the annotation comments are fair enough but they are not for Author of course. We are working on this. When do you do paste you say you don’t get quotation marks. Just click on the quoted text and you will get the Citation Dialog and here you can specify how you want the quoted text to appear, including quotation marks, italic and so on.

Author keeps my work very neat and the background colours allow my sight not to get tired easily.
Very easy to navigate through and I love the simple layout.

I've used Author for a long time now. As a writer it's the most innovative and useful tool I have ever seen. It practically exudes passion for 'thinking different': it packs in features that are great for everyone and utterly invaluable for academic writing. Author has been an absolute life safer! It’s really easy to use, it has a clean and simple layout and the best thing about it, it makes citations easy :)
I would advise this to all academic writers as it completely changes the citation game. It means I have a lot more time to focus on writing, rather than formatting.
