Simply Awesome and Secure
I have been a paid Protonmail user since before there was any such thing as an App. When you had to access via the website. I migrated from MS Exchange to Protonmail and absolutely love it. I have used many different mail platforms and I must say Protonmail is by far superior in functionality and security. I do hope they continue providing this awesome service and continue developing their VPN and other services too.

Needs better appearance options
I like the security of ProtonMail, but the lack of appearance options is really annoying. Add features to allow a more customized look in the app and it will take off. As someone who has switched over from gmail the app looks bland and difficult to navigate like communist Russia that I grew up in. Please sort this ASAP as it is not functional to people who run business and deal with a lot of emails daily.

go Protonmail ; and thanks developers for all your hard work and courtesy
I am a basic user of email. I had been with Yahoo Mail for as many years as itโs been around. The incessant boring into my brain of advertisements ruined the interface for me and cost me any trust at all in the security of my emails. Proton mail fixed everything that I found depressing about Yahoo! Mail.
itโs simple and easy to use; itโs free; the clarity and cleaner layout for me are phenomenal, and I โsleep betterโ because of the security provisions.
I actually look forward to going in Protonmail just because Iโm not gonna be bombed with ads all the time. Iโm going to upgrade to the premium version not because I need it but because I want to support the hard-working people who make Protonmail happen. Rock on!

Needs work but hopefully will get there
It is certainly not as slick as other mail apps and its feature range is narrower than accessing the account via a browser. Hopefully, it will be further developed.
EDIT: August 2020 - the problem described below still persists. Perhaps less often than before but the latest update was supposed to have resolved it(?). It has not.
One annoying thing is that on my iPhone XS with latest iOS trying to open the app from a new message notification often causes the app to momentarily open and then crash. This has been going on for many months, maybe more than year and I doubt I am the only one to report it.

Excellent Privacy Focused Email
TLDR version: great app/service for the price. App could use some creature comforts from an app like Spark or Airmail.
It does what it advertises and does so at a fair price, especially if paired with their VPN product. In my opinion it works best when paired with something like gmail for the items where security isnโt as critical. That way youโre not missing out on the convenience of google for certain items (family calendars or contact sync to iDevices for example), at least until Proton is able to provide solutions for those use cases.
Only suggestions to make this mail app better would be to have a one touch option for archiving a message on the screen when I read a message. Currently one must either call press to open the menu bar further then again the archive, or press the folder button at the top then choose the folder and press apply. The second functionality improvement would be use of share sheet or at least ability to export a message as a pdf. Every now and then itโs nice to be able to forward an email to someone as a text and export to pdf makes that happen easily.
The other suggestions are cosmetic only, and that is more color schemes, at least a light and dark would be nice and the option to use other app icons. The lock is nice but they also have the various proton logos that would work well too.

Thank you for providing your valuable feedback. We will share your suggestion with our team.
Awesome BUT
They should add an option to remember your password so you donโt have to re write your password every time
Great basic email app
I moved my custom domain from GSuite to ProtonMail mostly due to privacy and security concerns. ProtonMail as a service is solid and reliable. I love it so far. The ProtonMail iOS app (as of the time of this review) is a bit sparse in terms of features, but itโs reliable and I havenโt had any issues. ProtonMail is a solid option for those looking to take their data protection seriously.
Currently, the app is lacking some basic features that Iโve come to expect from a typical email app. For example, a calendar (which the team is currently working on), dark mode, and the ability to switch between multiple accounts without having to log in and out. I look forward to when the team finally to rolls out some of these quality of life features.

Great Engineering, Poor UI
Paid user for over 2 years.
Great construction, great premise but in my opinion itโs unusable in iOS without conversation grouping and a number of other design weaknesses currently make it unappealing against all the services itโs competing with.
Something as simple as scrolling through emails feels unfamiliar. The scrolling experience is different than anything else in iOS. Typography and use of color is weak and makes things hard on the eyes. Email header design looks shrunken. Organization is lacking support for sub folders. No dark mode. The list goes on and the company is slow to improve so far - albeit I understand their focus on security slows them down and I prefer this but the UX needs to be dramatically improved over the next several years in order to remain relevant.
Iโll continue support for the time being with the hopes that will happen but the web beta of v4.0 is not particularly inspiring. At the moment it looks like a new shade of purple against large white spaces again with just some new icons that are placed slightly differently.
I think the design would be much much better off if it adhered to the iOS design language. Itโs so far from a normal iOS experience that it doesn't accomplish its most basic goal - appeal to the average iPhone user.

End-to End Encryption Far From โFive Eyesโ
This is the way to go! Full end-to-end encryption brought to you by scientists from CERN and based in Switzerland, where strong privacy laws reign, far from the clutches of Anglophone intelligence snooping.
The free plan works great and there are still many good email addresses available as the userbase is still relatively small (while growing fast). I recommend upgrading to one of the very inexpensive paid plans to get more bells and whistles, and to aid the growth and development of this ambitious project which aims to bring truly private email to the world!

Secure mail at its best
I created an account in 2015 & it has worked faultlessly ever since.
Recently my sister needed to setup a new email account as her current email service is shutting down. I had no hesitation in recommending ProtonMail as the iOS app requires no fancy configuration just your username & password. My sister is enjoying how user friendly it is on her phone & l love the security it provides.
Many thanks to the development team for this wonder app & service.
