AI Work: Unrefined Application process
Update: After going through several support steps and referencing the reply from the developer, my account was reinstated. Given that I was able to contact an actual representative and get a resolution, my concerns are somewhat alleviated.
Original review:
When I applied for AI contract work, Handshake took all of my application info and certifications and then banned my account entirely without any explanation.
The application process was very vague and did not account for specific questions related to the specialty I was applying for. This seems like a phishing scam to collect data of qualified applicants without any intention of offering work.
When I requested they delete the data I had submitted when I completed my application, they refused to do so.

Wish you could use online instead of forcefully downloading the App
I think it’s dumb that it Requires you to download the app. I just wanted to view a listing
Not worth the space
Keeps recommending jobs that are way out of where I am looking for and not licensed. I have repeatedly tried to give it instructions and yet the slop that keeps giving me makes only sense to someone who is not in the industry, not worth the space on my phone.

Where is the job
So apparently my school has a QUOTE “92%” got a job or whatever rating six months after graduation. WHERE IS MY SURVEY for that like. Is anyone else just shocked at how incredibly misleading all of this is?? I get rejected from jobs on this app that are listed directly on my resume. I have literal years of experience fresh out of college yet I still am not the one you think is good enough?? This is getting tiring, mom.

Frustrating
Great app for finding legitimate job openings. However, the feature for job postings to require a candidate to “apply externally” defeats the whole purpose. What’s especially frustrating is applying through quick apply and being required to do their external application as well and if you don’t it withdraws your Handshake application. I would love for the job postings to initially show if it’s going to be a “quick apply” or “apply externally” before clicking on it. Or at least include a filter for that. It would also benefit from a feature to block or hide specific companies from your search results. The ai search feature isn’t very good either just give us more ways to filter. The salary filter needs tweaking because if I put >80k the results include roles whose ranges are 30k-80k simply because there’s an 80 in the range. Hopefully someone sees this and fixes something.

I’ve applied to 200 jobs using this app and only landed 1 interview. Also, there are many scam accounts and job postings that just want your information. It’s a shame that UofM Ann Arbor uses such a useless app as a “career resource”
Unwilling to do anything for you
You can get into their programs to do jobs for them yet you’ll randomly be removed for no reason. And the jobs don’t even try to follow the qualifications you’re listed for, and on top of that they somehow flagged my account for review and proceeded to forever boot me from the platform and never told me why even though I sent information that identifies me. Stupidly tedious, frustrating and disappointing.

Worst job application app BY A MILE
Absolutely awful. Had this app hoping I’d find a job after applying in indeed. First time I went on the app, I put in my location and no jobs were available in my location whilst being part time. I’d check back every few days and now it’s been around 2-3 months of having it and everytime I check for any jobs there is NONE available. I put in my location too and it comes up with jobs in Denmark 🤦♂️. I’ve been waiting and waiting and it seems this app is just a waste of time and storage. Don’t recommend.

Handshake has the most dreadful search function out of any job seeking platform. Their filters are pointless and still return many results for irrelevant postings. For a company so insistent on developing their AI, they could stand to make AI useful for the job search. Use anything else (LinkedIn, Indeed) and you’ll be better off. Horrible.

They will ban you for literally no reason.
If I could rate 0 stars I would. I had the app for maybe 2 hours and was emailed that I was banned from using the app. I had not done a thing but sign up. I contacted support to see why, and they didn’t say they just told me the same info I already knew. If you want to waste your time on getting banned on this app for no reason go ahead but this is ridiculous.

Open on app bug
Great app in a lot of ways, but there seems to either be a bug happening or this is in need of another look from the ux team: I get an email with a list of jobs, I click on one to learn more about it, it opens in my browser (duck duck go), a pop up asks me if I want to view the job on the Handshake app instead of my browser and here’s where the experience takes a dive—I can’t get rid of the pop up to just view it in my browser, but if I click to go to Handshake, instead of opening the already-installed-on-my-phone app, it opens the app store—which knows that I’ve downloaded already, so I click the “open” button, and it takes me to the app but not to the job I was interested in viewing, which I then have to search for. Please take a look and see if you can streamline the flow on this. Thanks for reading!
