Four Years of Loyalty, Then Refused Service for Respectfully Questioning a Charge

I have been a loyal Sport Clips customer for about four years and have referred family members to this location.

On July 26, my son visited this location and paid a total of $46, including tip. We always tip our hairstylists as a courtesy, so this is not about the tip, nor is this about $5 or $10.

My son has long hair, but there is no posted or written pricing policy stating that long hair is subject to a different price. The displayed haircut price was $35, and I have photos of the pricing posted at the location showing no additional charge for long hair.

Lauren had previously mentioned that my son’s haircut takes longer and that the price would need to increase. However, I never agreed to an increased price. She also explained that corporate expects her to generate $60 per hour. Whatever hourly target exists between Sport Clips and its stylists is an internal business matter and should not be the customer’s concern. As a customer, I should be able to rely on the posted pricing and be informed of and agree to any additional charges before the service.

But the pricing itself is not the main reason for this review.

When I later approached Lauren about the issue, I spoke to her calmly, respectfully, and with a smile. I intentionally kept my voice extremely low so that the conversation would remain private and other customers would hardly be able to hear us.

Despite that, while I was already seated for my haircut, Lauren removed the towel from around my neck in front of everyone and told me, “I will not serve you.” She then told me that I did not have to deal with Sport Clips anymore.

That was an extremely humiliating way to treat a customer. What I had deliberately tried to keep as a quiet, private conversation suddenly became obvious to everyone around us.

I told Lauren that if she personally did not want to serve me, that was her decision as a hairstylist, but she could not tell me that I could no longer deal with Sport Clips as a brand simply because I respectfully questioned the pricing. Another stylist, Christy, ultimately provided my haircut.

Even after that experience, I chose not to immediately post a public review. I tried to resolve the issue privately and peacefully. I left my name and phone number and specifically asked for the franchise owner or appropriate management to contact me. More than a week has passed, and nobody has contacted me.

This is not about $5 or $10. It is about transparency, professionalism, respect, and how a loyal customer is treated when they raise a legitimate concern.

No customer should be publicly embarrassed or refused service simply for respectfully questioning a charge. After approximately four years of loyalty and referring members of my family, I expected much better.

I am sure other Sport Clips locations may handle their customers differently, and I am not judging the entire brand based on this experience. However, because of the way I was treated, I will not return to this Simi Valley location.
