Getting faster with TR

I’ve used TrainerRoad for a few years. When I’m on the plan and stick to it, I always improve. The new AI feature is awesome and a great motivator to stick to the plan. It adapts to your schedule, outdoor rides, events… whatever life throws at you. TR Podcast is also a fantastic resource. Highly recommend!

Get fit, get fast

Just do the work. It’s that easy

Great Idea, poor execution and customer service

I have been on this app for just about a month. It routinely has issues, workouts don’t show up on iPhone or iPad, the Apple Watch integration for outdoor rides literally doesn’t work half the time.
When contacting customer service, the response is: oh yeah we know there is an issue, other people have reported them too but our app also is on Android and Windows too!
Oh nice so I paid $300 so you could tell the app doesn’t work on Apple products sometimes? That’s the solution?
I will be filing a complaint with Apple separately but please don’t waste your money if you intend to use this indoor or outdoor on iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.

Fails to load after update

Love the app and what you guys do. But seems like the latest update may have caused the app to load very slowly and that’s when it even does at all on my iPhone. I think my phone may have updated iOS recently as well so maybe it’s that, but either way thought I’d pass on that somethings up with app loading and it just started a couple days ago on my iPhone. I have not done the may 7 TR update or the latest iOS update on my iPad and it loads normally.

Blank/Black Screen

TR has always been a bit slow to load but for a couple of days now it has become much worse, to the point that the app simply won’t open on iPhone 14. All I get is a blank/Black screen and I can’t get any further. Was working well otherwise.

New app broke app completely

Like the April 10 review; app completely broken on iPhone

Disappointing

I did this app for a year and followed the structured training plan to a tea. I followed all the workouts and ended up just getting slower. Raced the same course as I did last year but got 2 minutes slower and just always felt horrible on the bike and felt like I was getting slower all the time. Potentially could be good for people who aren’t that serious into the sport. But for athletes who aren’t seriously trying to improve this isn’t the right fit. Seems they want you to have fun rather than gain speed. Typical week would include 3 workout days a week often doing VO2 and the muscles can’t handle that over the length of a season and I eventually just started getting much slower. Sad to see it. Now I have a human coach and seem to be progressing loads faster.

Hate AI

New plan design does not give credit enough for outside activity. Discouraging change to program. Tells me I need to rest more. FTP decreases even when fairly loyal to plan. Considering dropping it after years of use.

Excellent training tool

Been using for a year now having moved from Zwift. I find it much more structured and prescriptive. Was never a big fan of racing all the time. TR lets you dial in upcoming events (sportive, triathlons or trips) then provides a programme to fit into your work/life availability. If you stick to the plan you start to see tangible benefits and improvements in FTP which transfers out onto road/gravel. Definitely would recommend 👍

New update broke it

New update rendered app unusable. Unable to load any workouts. App not functional at this time, despite subscription.
Previously, it was great, and I depend(ed) on it for training.

Awesome!!

I’ve tried a lot of different training programs out there, and this one is by far the best IMHO. And now, with the addition of AI integration it’s gotten even better at recommending workouts, which is super helpful for those of us with a more random training schedule due to life and work getting in the way. Keep up the great work Nate and Jonathan (and your team). Love the TR podcast too!

Used to be awesome

Used to be my favorite app to train on the TacxNeo trainer. After the AI introduction everything takes so much longer. Can’t find my workouts. Please give us the option to go back to the prior interface and i will subscribe again

All about gains

I have been using TR for 9 months now and my FTP has increased from 198W to 313W, my VO2 max has jumped much higher and I feel stronger than ever on the bike. It just works. The AI driven nature means it constantly adjusts based on your day to day activity, performance or if you have time off. I love the ability to tweak things if necessary and the vast number of workouts ensures variety and interest. With other training platforms I have either overtrained or simply not improved due to mediocre workouts, but TR has had me improving steadily month on month, staying fresh and feeling motivated to constantly improve.

Useless AI

New AI model is absolutely useless. If you want to do specific training your own choice, you can’t. It override it and not allow you to do it

Disappointing new UX

The latest UI revamp has introduced a couple of particularly frustrating interactions for those of us who manually choose workouts rather than relying on AI workout selection.

1. When browsing through workouts after selecting type and duration, selecting a workout opens a modal view of that workout to see specific wattage and interval durations. Clicking the x in the top right of this modal closes and erases the type and duration selections; you have to start over. This is a regression from previous versions where the x simply closed the modal. Yes, I’m aware of the back button in the bottom; this is a departure from how modals work in other applications.

2. After manually choosing a workout on a yellow day, the app will almost immediately replace that with a 30m recovery ride. This will happen so quickly that you can’t choose a workout and then, say, start the workout in Zwift before it’s replaced. Some of us with busy schedules need to work out on yellow days because we know we have a day or two coming up which we’ll have to take off.

Broken AI

I loved TR for 18 months. It seemed really in sync with me and I trusted it to set my training just right. My monthly progress and FTP improvements aligned with my outdoor ride assessments.

Then they broke in with a new AI release that is just awful. FTP is now a proprietary score that has changed values suddenly. The AI predict your FTP is a gimmick. It slows down my system and spits out an ftp prediction for a month away than changes around d day to day it becomes a mental health issue for me.

In process of migrating to a platform that adheres to long term conventions so I can track my progress in industry understood metrics not a weird propriety one.

Very sad about this, it’s a shame when such a nice thing comes to an end

Train smarter

I’ve been using TrainerRoad now for around 10 years. I’ve always found it to be a couple of steps ahead of the competitors. At the minute it appears to be light years ahead of the other apps like Zwift or Rouvy. I would say if you want your training to count and you want to get faster sign up to TrainerRoad, if you want to play a video game go to Zwift or Rouvy. Time is precious use it wisely.

App fails mid-workout

I have been using TrainerRoad for the last two months and the app has failed mid-workout on multiple separate occasions. A couple of times, the app has dropped all my sensors, and then refuses to reconnect them. Another couple of times, if I stop pedalling mid workout to refill my bottles, when I restart, it skips a random chunk of the workout and drops me right in the middle of an interval further down the workout (this happened just now). The unpredictability and unreliability of the app is seriously making me consider alternatives. You should too.

Awesome app

Reliable for improving cycling fitness, love it!

Super effective

I bailed off Peloton after two years of stagnant performance. This structured coaching is not only effective, but it takes me to the appropriate difficulty level every time.

FTP went from 266 to 310 in three and a half months. I’m not burnt out and am motivated to ride every time I get on the trainer.

I’ve also been super happy with the new AI feature. The adaptive training was great but the AI is next level.

I’ll never go back to “self-coaching”. This is a crazy good deal and while I hope they keep the price the same, I’d happily pay double.

PS - I never leave reviews but the negative comments left in the last month or so are either inaccurate or just a pretty clear indication of people’s laziness or inability to deal with app updates.

It is still intuitive

It still allows you as much or as little control that you might like

If people did not understand what they signed up for, maybe try the free trial first or do 6-9 seconds of research before putting your credit card in. What part of 30 days-risk free did you miss?
