Could be improved

Would be good if there was a way to filter out hosts that already rejected you and hosts that receive a lot of applications. Also very inconvenient that you can’t delete or archive hosts that rejected you from your messages inbox. The most important thing is that some hosts require you to have an EU passport. I understand they don’t wanna wait until a volunteer gets their visa, however, there are some nationalities who can visit EU without a visa as long as they don’t work. Such discrimination is very discouraging.

Not recommended if you are a solo female traveller

I was involved with an incident with a host as a solo female traveller (take that as you will) and I left suddenly (after the male host tried to prevent me from leaving, to the point where I had to call a local friend in the country to come pick me up from the property and help me). It was an unsafe environment and there was no conceivable way I could ‘talk it out’ with the host. I activated WP safeguard and heard nothing. I have since emailed and contacted them via social media and not one person has contacted me. Absolutely deplorable service and company who do not care about their women customers. I will not be renewing my membership and I do not recommend this company if you are a solo traveller - if you need urgent help, they do not seem to care.

Things has changed

Unfortunately, these days those apps just don’t work the way they’re supposed to. Places that offer accommodation in exchange for work either end up asking for money or expecting people to work far more than is fair. It’s been almost one year that I’ve been trying to get some experience from it and seriously I have just wasted my money. That’s not how it should be. We’re travelers simply trying to experience the world for ourselves, and it really shouldn’t have to be this difficult.

Worldpacker’s incentives are sustainability, personal growth, cultural immersion, and opportunity for smaller budgets. Unfortunately the 1 stars match my experience and that means they’re lacking the adaptability and prioritizing a certain demographic. Scheduling a host is difficult with planning because you choose “preferred dates and flexible dates” the moment you request. Hosts either send you the literal dates you submitted or swing you over to WhatsApp for a wishywashy interview. While some hosts are great communicators, others are not which can make picking expensive flights both a nightmare and risky. This is were a specific demographic comes in: if you use Worldpackers it is best if you have lots of flexibility, have plenty of fallback money, or have a safety net. For the people that are on a tight budget, Worldpackers hosts can make or break you. Some are very nice, but others don’t consider the costs to travel. Hosts also might suggest jobs on WhatsApp that aren’t a fair exchange for the stay. It is a good idea to speak with your host through a call first because you might get more details about the experience not disclosed on the app. I think most hosts are likely very good people, but if you run into all the problems to find one then you could end up lost a lot of money. The problem I have with Worldpackers is that they can adjust the app to help risk management, and since there are many 1stars bringing this up, it appears negligent.

My problems with this app.

I didn’t think being a male would be such a problem for landing any kind of volunteering opportunity. Especially when the hosts themselves never say anything about it. As well they say the hosts have a 100% response rate but 80% don’t respond at all, and it’s not that my profile is bad Worldpackers tells me it’s above average. Other than these problems it has been pretty easy to understand properties and what id being doing there. For an $70 fee I feel like applying to 15 places and getting 2 responses is a little ridiculous.

Useless use Workaway instead

Unless you go to Europe or typical destination the app is just useless. Not that much hosts and when getting the pack for 2 you pay more but you get less options as a lot don’t accept couples.
Waste of time and money. They promise you responsive hosts but that’s not the case

APP NÃO FUNCIONA!

Já fui voluntária por fora do app! Agora quero fazer pagamento do pack casal com meu companheiro. FAZ DOIS DIAS! Todos os dados ok…. E fica aparecendo “ops, problemas inesperados! Tente mais tarde” muito muito desagradável! Já enviei e-mail e não tive ajuda que resolvesse! Oque fazer? Já baixei o app e apaguei 3 vezes, dois e-mails já!
