Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Google Tasks at 4.8 against Passwordstate's 3.3. Google Tasks also leads on update cadence (weekly vs every 2 months) and ratings volume (107K vs 4). Passwordstate's advantage is review sentiment (100% vs 62%) and iOS requirement (15.0 vs 17.0). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
Google Tasks holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 3.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Google Tasks has 107K ratings behind it against 4, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 62% of Google Tasks's written reviews are positive against 100% of Passwordstate's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Google Tasks ships an update weekly, Passwordstate every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 15, 2026 and October 7, 2026 respectively.
