Verdict
The clearest difference is ads: Better Workout at none against Interval Timer's shown. Better Workout also leads on update cadence (every 6 days vs every 2 months) and review sentiment (100% vs 84%). Interval Timer's advantage is ratings volume (246 vs 25) and device support (4 vs 2). On price, rating, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Better Workout sells 8 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per month and Interval Timer sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Interval Timer holds the better App Store score, 4.9 against 4.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Interval Timer has 246 ratings behind it against 25, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 100% of Better Workout's written reviews are positive against 84% of Interval Timer's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Better Workout ships an update every 6 days, Interval Timer every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on June 10, 2026 and September 28, 2026 respectively.
