Even through my previous universal remote is still working (it’s one that uses a web interface to setup devices and activities) it’s rechargeable battery is wearing out so I thought I’d get a replacement.
I have a 14 year old Pioneer plasma TV PDP-508XDA, a 14 year old Integra DTS 5.8 AV receiver and and not-quite-as-old Samsung BD-H6500 BluRay player.
I entered my AV equipment brands into the One For All website questionnaire and it recommended a few controllers including the Smart Controller 5.
I knew that the company had this app to use to program the remote so I thought it’d be even easier that using the web based solution with the previous remote.
When trying to setup the device I discovered the model numbers of my devices weren’t in there. (My equipment is reasonably old, though I thought this would INCREASE the chances of the codes being available). I tried the automatic setup where the remote tries the different codes it has for that brand but none of them worked - for all three of my devices!
I thought I’d try selecting different models (of the same brand) for each device. That worked (at least the power buttons did turn the devices on and off).
Then I went back to the app to setup activities. Doesn’t seem to be able to do it. The app can only add the different devices and that’s it. How disappointing.
I’d be inclined to return it if the packaging hadn’t been completely destroyed opening it. (It’s the thick plastic packaging that you have to cut and tear open which leaves sharp plastic edges on which it is easy to cut/stab yourself.
Wish I’d never bought it.
It gets a two because, as of right now, I can turn on/off all the devices with the one remote, and that’s about it.
