Hello and thank you for your review. Apple insisted that I remove the link to donate from the about screen because ... Apple. Great to hear you are enjoying the game and feel free to visit the Pathos website ;-)
  • Finally!

It’s great to have found a rogue-like that I can play on my iPhone. What’s better? It’s a NetHack clone, awesome!
  • Good Job, but..

The game plays fairly well, but I have yet to get past dungeon level 10. Overall, as entertaining as the game may be, it seems to be player hostile rather than player friendly.

An archer in my party will chase after spent arrows and get killed in the process; I can’t order them to stay as a party. Leaves little room for leadership.

Opening a door and finding a room full of baddies seems unfair, and player hostile. I doubt that a single player survives, especially when baddies include dragons. My team of three survived, but barely so.

The range for archers is hard to peg; sometimes I can shoot from far away, other times if I shoot the player will move up to the baddie and shoot. A good way to get killed in the process; defeats the purpose of being an archer.

The game lets me play with companions, but each companion comes with a pet, and the space for moving to the next level or climbing a ladder can be too small for all of them; some get left behind. I can tell a pet, but not a player, to ‘stay’.

More to say, but long enough already.

Hey, not sure if Apple bothers to notify that I have responded, but I'll respond nonetheless... You have some valid points regarding the party management. Pathos did not start out as a party-based game, so there will be room for improvement. Regarding the pets, you can turn them off in the side menu of the start screen. In terms of ranged combat. If you are inline with your opponent you will just shoot. Otherwise you will move towards your opponent until you are inline. It's up to you to if you want to move more strategically. But I can see how that could be frustrating when playing with a party of characters and the AI kicks in. Again, room for improvement :) Single player is actually probably a lot easier once you've mastered the early game. Managing hunger for a team can be tricky at first. But I'm confident that you will get beyond level 10 before too much longer. All the best and good luck!
  • Wow, definitely a hidden gem!

I’m incredibly surprised this only has 8 ratings as I wrote this - you need to get the word out dude! You’ve done a fantastic job here 😁

I’m enjoying this more than each of iNetHack2, Pixel Dungeon, Adventure Quest 2, and the other dozen or so dungeon crawlers I’ve tried on iOS in the past year. It’s tough at the start but that’s how I like it 😉👍

Probably the only suggestion I can make at this point is to add a couple of additional ‘quick buttons’ like the single customisable one you have there now.

Starting a wizard on the Overland mode can be AWESOME if you reroll until you get a wand of polymorph at the beginning... I zapped my lvl1 horsie and he turned into a lvl30 mercenary, zapped myself and I turned into a lvl 25 ‘black marketeer’, with 116hp and 70mp, and Speed 10!! Not only that, but he has intrinsic immunity to cold, fire, shock, petrify and sleep, and I start with a magic immunity cloak, and I picked up a drain resist amulet early... there’s a reason this will be my first real scorer! lol Edit: just added a lvl 20 Vorpal Jabberwock to my army... he WAS a level 6 sheep xD ProTip: don’t use a cat for this in Overland mode, he will still be constantly afraid of water, even when he’s a dragon and can fly over it haha...

This is also the first one I haven’t died or had my pet die just escaping the kobolds 🙄 Actually there was one - I started with rings of poly AND poly control - but I didn’t know I had to trigger it myself by holding finger on my character. That run also started with a genocide scroll and I nuked the kobold population with it haha 😂 But died to something else after waiting for ages for the polymorph to trigger...

Anyhoo I’m loving it and you should be proud, it’s an excellent incarnation of the nethackish genre 🤓👍

Hey, thanks for the great review! Always great to hear from a fellow Aussie :) Feel free to help get the word out about Pathos! In the next release, I'll make it so you can customise the top right icon (currently used for real-time/turn-based toggles). Thanks again for all your kind words.
  • Obvious work of love

This is so well done that it's an obvious work of love. Took only a few guesses to get the controls figured out. Almost everything can be clicked or hold down for additional information or actions. I'm 60yrs old and have played some from of Rouge or Nethack ever since they first emerged in the 70's and we were making our own computers in our basements.
Special request to the developer, I'm sensitive to the siding scroll, any chance of adding a jump scroll or always centered option?

Hey, thanks for the review and kind words. Feel free to reach out to me on email (hodgskin.callan@gmail.com). I'm not quite sure what you mean about scrolling?
  • PLAY IT

Never played Nethack, but heard about it from Matt Colville. Was looking for a similar experience on mobile and found one in Pathos. It’s free of scummy monetization practices, and delivers a complex, complete and feature rich experience at no charge. A breath of fresh air for a mobile game. I hate most mobile games and I’m traditionally a console player, but sometimes I’ll play Pathos over my console. Give it a go. You lose nothing by downloading and trying.

  • Neat

Pathos is one of my favourite games. This game has lots of variables and has cool graphic options. It allows you to explore different fantasy concepts in conjunction with each other; and allows you to test different combinations in the numbers game.

There is a lot of potential growth for this game, and I say keep it up. However, after learning the basics the game it gets pretty easy. Sure it get easier and harder at random, but it is usually easy to complete when you know what you're doing. Maybe there could be an option to increase and or decrease different variables, so to make the game more challenging in different ways, not to be picky or anything.

Anyway, great game. Definitely recommend to those who like fantasy and rp.

First of all this is a super fun game
Secondly I noticed the dev is super active and I love it. Thank you for this amazing game and btw you should make a optional donation button in the settings. I know a lot of people would love to support your amazing creation.

  • Best Game I’ve Played in my Life

I used to play nethack for about 20 years but it was always very frustrating and I never won a game. Now my life is complete and I can die happy with Pathos. It’s pure genious!!!!
