  • Simply the best player for Tidal on iPhone/iPad

I have a Hidizs S9 Pro USB DAC dongle for pushing hi-res (Tidal) music from my phone/computer into a very high quality tube headphone amp. Until I found Amarra, nothing played Tidal music anything close to bit-perfect from an Apple device. And No, Tidal player itself plays MQA pretty poorly on the iPhone in comparison. On Android it is no problem using Hiby player which plays Tidal bit-perfect. But I really didn’t want to switch from my iPhone 12 to an android type phone. Amarra sounds great on Apple devices, maybe not quite as good as bit-perfect MQA players on Android. But pretty darned close. Not only is it way better playing to wired devices but equally good to Bluetooth IEMs. I have a set of Bluetooth 5.2 IEMS that sound as good as some of the $100-$200 wired IEMs I own. I’m simply blown away at the sound quality of Amarra Play on idevices. Every time I use it, it puts a smile on my face. The only thing missing is being able to access favorite Tidal playlists in My Music and ability to play Artist Stations. Maybe a future update will include it. I’m hopeful

  • Does what is says it will do

As my title states, the app does what it says it will do. Allows me to equalise Tidal on my iPhone. The sound quality is good. Would have given it 5 stars if the equaliser was a bit more sophisticated (only has 4 bands and no ability to accurately specify the exact values for frequency, gain and Q settings). Overall pretty good.

  • Opens fine, then crashes when used….

    Please fix this.

Hi Stu, make sure you are using the updated version of Amarra Play available on the App store. If still having issues, please contact us at support@sonicstudio.com.
  • Audiofile Quality

Yes there are some bugs and quirks, but for someone wanting an EQ and the best sounding Masters from Tidal, it is a must!

The other nice thing about Amarra Play, is the remote capability to control the Mac counterpart.

Likewise, the Mac counterpart I use, Amarra Lux, you won't find better sound! It too has some bugs and flaws.

The bottom line, if you are like me, and want quality sound, you will welcome these apps and overlook the bugs until they are addressed.

  • No EQ for Amazon music

I rate this a one star due to lack of Amazon music option of the EQ like with Tidal. My best friend and I were using Tidal and I was about purchasing the EQ for that but he had to canceled subscription for something cheaper and found Amazon music HD to be better so I was searching the App Store for one like this for Amazon given the fact that Amazon removed the built in EQ from iOS app. I would rate it five stars if the developers were to take on the challenge of being the first to develop one made for Amazon music.

  • It’s ok but needs work

The music from the app sounds great but some issues need to be addressed first is the music you sync from iTunes needs to be able to load faster because for some reason it doesn’t load at all for me at times. Second is if you use the file sharing for this app it removes your cover art for some reason even if it is embedded in the music file.

  • Good - if and when it works.

Ok, the app is dated, clunky, horrific for adding music and desperately in need of updating.

However, the codec support is excellent and when it works, in conjunction with an external DAC, produces excellent sound. Though you can thank the source files and external DAC for much of that.

Sadly, and the reason for only one star. I loaded half a dozen albums - a mix of standard FLAC, High Res FLAC, DSD, DSF and MQA and everything was what I hoped for. Skip forward a couple of weeks to when I finally had the time to add more albums - around 30 of them. And the App just constantly crashed at each and every launch.

No amount of reboots, uninstalling and reinstalling would fix this. It seems to be fine if you load albums then never again dare to add more. And this is on an iPhone 12 Pro Max running the latest iOS.

Maybe it’s different if you use their desktop app, but they haven’t inspired confidence in me to shell out for that. If I could get this useless app refund I would in a heartbeat.

I’d be glad to revisit the app if they fix the issues. Though as I’m uninstalling it, I probably won’t notice if they do.

  • Seriously underdeveloped

I’m a big fan of Amarra Luxe for MacOS but Amarra Play for iOS is a complete mess. It has more problems than I have space to list. Now, I know you’re a small company with a small dev budget but seriously, guys, drop the app until it’s fixed - it’s damaging your audiophile reputation
  • Absolute Garbage

This is the only app I have ever went out of my way to review. I got this app to support my Tidal IOS. The EQ doesn’t work 99 percent of the time and when it does it’s all distorted. Absolutely the biggest rip off. Avoid this if you value good sounding audio. Terrible.

    Developer Response

Thanks for your feedback, version 1.23 is available on the app store. We recommend deleting previous versions and install the update. TIDAL access is working fine. The EQ works as well, there is a small issue when changing presets that is being addressed.
  • Stay away

Qobuz only played at CD quality. Save your money!

    Developer Response

Qobuz plays back at different qualities depending on your Qobuz subscription.
