  • Got locked out of my apartment

The watch app frequently logs out for no apparent reason.
  • Works great

My apartment complex is strictly electronic locks so it’s convenient for quick entry, especially since I work late nights and don’t like fiddling with a key or a lock in the dark. At first my phone couldn’t connect to the lock for some reason, but after my locks were changed it works perfectly. I don’t even have to be in front of my door, but can unlock as I’m walking up to my door so I can go right in.

It’s a great option for single women living alone.

  • Worst electronic lock system I used to date

I cannot even call it a smart lock as there are no smart functions to it. In fact it’s less useful than a key. Each update of the app seems to remove more functionality. It seems in one of the recent updates the ability to use Siri shortcuts was removed which was the one saving grace of not having to physically get my phone out at most doors. Now even that doesn’t work, good luck if you’re carrying groceries or anything else in. Even when the Siri shortcuts were functional they only worked at public area doors and not your own personal lock so I only had to sit everything down and get my phone out once instead of at every door like now. There is no unlock on approach feature with Bluetooth or WiFi like actual smart locks have.

If you’re looking to move into a building that forces these locks on you be aware of the monumental pain they are.

  • Absolutely horrible

If you have very minimal cell service the app does not work if you’re inside the elevator the app does not work you literally need to unlock the elevator before the doors close everyone in the building 32 story building that I live in everyone is complaining about this app not working and yeah nobody does anything about it have talked with new construction buildings they have opted to avoid installing this product because of the issues that it is known to have unfortunately where I live this is the only way we can get into our units from floor to floor or even into the building and the thing is down more than it’s up and running. Avoid purchase of this product and it’s services a key fob works much better.!!!!!!!

  • A solution in search of a problem.

Hey guys, let’s make everything more complicated than it needs to be! Let’s take a tried and tested solution such as a key or a card and make it less reliable and less user friendly!
  • Love the idea, hate the support

The app has worked fine for over a year but recently I cannot get it to unlock my door via Bluetooth, and neither can my partner. Sometimes it works for him, but it never does for me. Weirdly it works fine for other doors around the building and the parking garage gate. The building manger sent someone to replace the batteries in our lock, and it worked on his phone but for mine nothing.

There is zero tenant-facing support from Latch, so I’m stuck punching in codes every time.

  • Ugh!

This app is soooo finicky. I have to use it just so and hold it just right for it to work. Honestly I’ve had to quit the app and reopen. The amount of times I’ve been stuck in the elevator because the doors close, and then it won’t register—it happens all the time. Not user error, so many of my friends who live in different buildings and need to use latch—they also have the same frustration. Also! I used to do door dash, and Instacart especially in the pandemic, but you cant allow the dasher or Instacarter to deliver ! They get stuck in elevators and always call. Because of the pandemic this is fine, I’ll come down, but I miss the days of just pressing 9 on my phone and they were able to get the food delivered outside my door.

Pro, yes it’s super safe. If it can be this hard for me to get to my apartment, and I’ve been using latch for over a year, then I can only assume that no one is getting in who shouldn’t be.

  • Truly Awful UX

How does this have 4.7 out of 5 stars? My new building uses Latch and really appreciate the concept but it’s incredibly slow and EVERYTIME I lock my door, when I start to walk away, it unlocks at least once before I have to go back and lock it again. I’ve never spent so much time getting in and out of my place. It’s really infuriating that I no longer have a key.

Suggestion: fix the glitches that unlock your door after you’ve locked it and use similar location -based technology that are used to remote unlock vehicles without having to pull your phone out and it would be great.

  • Needs minor improvements

Latch works great for me, but a few things could make it better

    1. The Apple Watch app icon is not scaled correctly for S7 Apple Watch, so it looks cut off when added as a complication on most Apple Watch faces.

    2. The iPhone widget should be able to hold more doors. I regularly use 3 doors and 4 elevators, and would like access to all of them within the widget.

    3. After having the app open for more than about 30 seconds on the Apple Watch, it stops searching for devices to unlock. If I unlock a door, and then wait 2 minutes for an elevator, it will not unlock the elevator unless I close the Apple Watch app and reopen it. Basically, the Bluetooth stops searching after a short period of time which takes the ease out of the Apple Watch solution

  • Missing no-brainer features

The experience leaves a lot to be desired. A shortcut feature seems like a no brainer - it would allow me to automatically unlock my apartment’s gate after arriving. Instead I have to fumble with my phone while driving - not safe! Heck, you could even build a CarPlay app to do this if a geolocation shortcut is too much of a risk.

Overall, it seems like Latch is built with property managers in mind in order to upsell apartment properties, even though there is no real tangible benefit over using a remote or key. That’s disappointing.
