  • Why don’t you report shark sightings on north shore of mass

Everyone knows they shocks there but you don’t report them people put videotapes online all the time send them to you but you don’t report them you think we’re stupid some reason you’re hiding this from everyone it started last year before that you guys were really good
  • Sharktivity

I’m a long time user of the Sharktivity app I’ve always found it interesting and helpful as we live on the cape. I have to say I’m not thrilled with the changes recently made to the app. It’s harder to use than it used to be!
  • New version requires that you zoom in on a location to see sightings and pings

The new version is somewhat misleading. When you open the new version with a broad view of New England waters, it makes it appear that there was minimal shark activity. A specific area on the map will appear to have no activity. However, when you expand that specific map area, you often discover that there has been activity there. I prefer the older version that displayed all the activity at once. It was easier to see where sharks were present rather than having to engage in the time consuming process of having to expand views as you proceed up the coast from the Cape to Maine.

  • Fun conservation app

They have names lol! So many of the sharks are tagged and identified that we can watch their movements year after year. I love seeing the activity of the sharks, including when they pass cameras or their devices ping the receivers. It’s been so educational, fascinating, and fun. I appreciate the latest improvements with filters like photos. Highly recommend for shark fans.

  • Better before update

I’ve been using Sharktivity for a couple years now. Before it was updated this past year, the app opened to a map showing pings by sharks in the period of time it was set to (I usually have mine set to show pings in the last week). Now it opens to my location and I have to move the map to the area I want to view. The only exception is when I click on a notification of a shark alert from the home screen of my phone and then it only shows the current ping and not all activity for the past week. I understand that the previous app behavior and setup is very similar to that of Ocearch, but as a user, that’s exactly what I expect to see when I open the app cold and not from a notification. During the year I regularly check for shark activity so I am opening the app before receiving a notification almost daily. Please consider returning to the former interface that shows all shark activity by default when the app is opened. (I already know where I am so you don’t need to show me that. 😉) Thank you for all your work with these beautiful creatures.

This is an option! Please change your Map Launch Region in Settings > General to "Show All Events." If you have any other comments or suggestions, please let us know! sharktivity@atlanticwhiteshark.org
  • Latest update

I am a new englander and often visit the cape, found that the old version of this app to be very helpful in being mindful of sharks. This latest update is not worth looking at it barely shows activity and is not user friendly. Sometimes things are best left alone like the old version.
  • Please change the format

The old format ie knowing the location of the sightings was - off what beach etc was much easier than reading coordinates when using for vacation info. Thank you.
  • Disappointed in the “Upgrade”

I used to look at this app daily in the summer to check in on what all the sharks near me were up to. I enjoyed seeing their progress up and down the Cape as they triggered the beacons. However with the “upgrade” I find the app far less intuitive and rarely use it now. Typically all I see now when I log in are reports of predation. Perhaps the beacons are no longer in use or there’s a way to tweak settings I haven’t discovered. As is the app is far less interesting without seeing the named sharks pop up. The simplicity of the old app was its strength!

    Developer Response

The detection buoys went in the water on July 3rd this year, which is why there wasn't much activity prior. Please use the "Hide Predations" feature to hide all predations, which can be found via the filter menu in the top-left corner of the app.
  • Updated look downgraded UX

Used this app frequently last year and it was great, could easily navigate it and see what was happening in the area where I was. Somehow the the update was an actual downgrade in UX. Previously you could have both sightings and pings and you could easily see what was going on around you. Somehow this update I’m getting pings from Halifax even though I’m in Cape Cod. The updated look is great however the functionality and UX is lacking after the update.
