I can’t say enough positive things about this app. I first learned about it in a WIRED magazine article, and decided to give it a run. “4 years!” I thought, “How am I supposed to keep this up for 4 years!” The answer is incrementally.

Once a day I receive a notification at a random time each day, once per day (though sometimes I receive a notification, then another a few hours later—I chalk this up to wherever Minutiae’s base of operations passing a 24-hour window). I open the app and have 5 seconds to take a picture, then get paired with someone in the world who took a picture at the same time. Rarely is it a person I’ve had before (though it has happened), and having a person doesn’t mean they have me (I got paired with a coworker once, who had someone in China).

The feeling of getting to stop and appreciate all the little moments in another persons life, to “stop and smell the roses” so to speak, is priceless. And as each little box fills up in the home screen, I find myself realizing just how many “moments” fill each and every day.

    Thanks!

  • One of my favorite apps!

Minutiae has been a part of my life for 2+ years now, and I’m already able to see so many changes by seeing a glimpse of my past photos.
I look forward to the random notification each day and capturing my life as it unfolds around me.
Not only has it been fun and engaging, but it has made me happy and proud of the life I’m living and how far things have come in a mere two years.
I’m going to feel so happy and empty once my full project is done.
Thank you, minutiae, for such a unique and fulfilling experience.

  • Minutiae is amazing

I’ve had it for about 2.5 years, and once a day it randomly pops open and I have a short time, 1 minute, to snap a pic of my life. It captures a moment in time that I would not otherwise captured.

Then for the next minute, 60 seconds, a can scroll through my past captured moments in time, or I can choose to peek into the window is someone else’s life, often on the other side of the world, who has joined my world and experienced exactly the same capture of time that I have just experiences. Maybe they are petting their cat, or shaving their face. It’s just random and fun. And I can leaf through their past captured moments, or I can come back to my world and look around.

At the end of 1 minute the app closed the window of time entirely and I can see only little square, that are all the past moments that have been captured. But they are tiny little blurs. They stay little blurry squares until sometime in the next 24 hours this happen again and I get to do this all over again.

At the end of 4 years, 1440 days of captured moments, Minutiae will be send me, in download form, or I can opt in to having a print version of all my captured memories.

And then there is a mystery at the end of this journey. Cause they say, at the end of 4 years they will let me know something else, something more...

This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever had, and I love being part of this community. Thank you!

  • Perspective

An interesting project to help shift your perspective on the moments we capture and share. A nice contrast to regular social media.
  • The magnificence of the mundane

This app is beautifully simple, once a day take a photo! A minute to acknowledge the alert and 5 second to shoot what's around you!
Sounds simple but you quickly realise that it is profound to look at the minutiae of your day. This easy to use app slowly changes the way you view the the places that you inhabit, the people in your life. The world taken for granted.
Get the app and get started !!

  • Thanks for making a free trial!

Before this last update, upon wanting to have a look further than the create account screen meant needing to pay. Nice now you can get a feel for it before needing to commit

Hi Taylor, Thanks for your comment. Each participant cost on average $5.00 in bandwidth and storage expenses over the 4 year duration of the minutiae project (We save all your images in medium resolution so you can look at them once you complete the project). Once we pay Apple their 30%, and give the Developers their 35%, this means we need to charge $14.99 to break even. (We wanted to charge $14.40, which would work out to 1¢/day but we weren’t able to convince Apple that they should let us charge this price). Did I mention that we’re not selling your data or bombarding you with AD’s, that’s worth something. http://www.minutiae-app.org/faqs/
  • Subscription service???

** update has been effective. Back to the original quality of the app.

    * the update which caused the issue has been rolled back... I will wait and see what the corrected update will do to my access and then update the review.

I joined minutiae a year ago. Now they have changed there funding model and require a subscription fee.
Hmmm, no mention of the need to move to a subscription service was mentioned when I initially joined. There was mention of the possibility of purchases at the end of 1440 days....

Poor business model to change conditions mid stream. I had been promoting this app to others. This is unlikely to continue.

I am surprised that the early adopters are being treated the same as the Johnny Come latelys.

  • Insightful and fun

A brilliant daily journal of reality I’m otherwise too lazy to keep.

Minutiae offers a fascinating and yet reassuring insight into daily life around the world and antidote to airbrushed social media representations of life. Although admittedly still quite a few shots of food...

I love seeing that sometimes other people are just staring at tv, in a bar at 3am or shopping for flat pack furniture. Also realising how many of my photos are of my office has been a reality check!

The little notification to take a snap comes at random times and can be a hilarious ice breaker.

Thank you Martin and Daniel for celebrating normality :-)
