  • It’s simple but some missed opportunities

First, it’s a pretty decent app for quick drilling. But it’s hurting in a few big areas.

    1. It would be amazing if you could filter out characters that you already know 100%. I’m 2 hours into studying, you don’t need to ask me what “A” means anymore. It would be cool if I could shut off a row from showing up in the flash cards. This means the lower rows are harder to learn because they’re less likely to show up.

    2. Sometimes the words show up, so you’ll see a word like “YA SU MI”. And maybe I only know the character for MI so I’m not looking for YA and SU, I’m just looking for MI to get it right, but I haven’t actually learned the rest of the characters. But I’ll get credit for YA and SU. So I’d prefer being able to shut off words from showing up and just let me do individual characters.

    3. Back to “YA SU MI”. I have no idea what YASUMI means. How does that help me? Once I click the right answer for YASUMI, the translation should show up afterwards. That would help pick up vocabulary instead of just throwing words at us for no reason.

    4. I’d love a combined mode where I can practice both Hiragana and Katakana next to each other to make sure I actually got everything down.

Overall decent app, just hope the dev sees this.

  • Simple and effective

I know my kana but just need practice drilling to make recognition automatic. This app is perfect - quick, simple to install and use, and it can be used for just a minute or two, or significantly longer if you have the time. It would be fun to use it to learn kana, but is also excellent for skill consolidation. Thank you.

  • Literally amazing!!!

So simple yet so effective. It’s not boring and actually works, which is more than I can say for pretty much every other app like this. Whats more, its super quick in its effectiveness and had me reading both hiragana and katakana in days. You don’t pay for anything, and the ad system works to only show when you’ve gotten too many wrong, and even so its not limited and doesn’t take you out. I am now much better at Japanese than i was when i first started but this is definitely the easiest and fastest way to get results with kana. My only wish is that you could make one with Korean hangul. サンキュー!!!

  • Twenty years of in the game...Still the same...

I started learning Japanese back before smartphones (ancient times of 2001). I drilled katakana and hiragana into my head in the backs of coffee shops and pizza places before and after class.

I have been inspired to pick up my studies again but I want to re-lay the foundation. Now I have this app. This does all the work that the flash cards I made did and more. I feel as excited as I did twenty years ago and now I don’t have to carry a heavy stack of disintegrating paper stock bound together by a rubber band rolling around my Jansport. I can grind on the ‘kana using the same thing I use to pay my bills and watch silly videos. What a world.

  • A great app with some minor flaws

This is a great app for daily rote memory practice. After a week of using it I have noticed an increase in the speed at which I am able to read the characters in every day life. It is user friendly and uses ads as a motivation tactic. Overall very good.

There are a handful of small problems though, such as being unable to review areas you are weaker in, and having no resources for learning Kanji.

I give it 4/5 stars. Definitely worth having for daily memorisation if you are learning Hiragana or Katakana - or both.

  • Great app for hiragana and katakana learning!

I rarely write reviews, but this app deserves one! As I take more drills and practice in the app, I can feel myself finally starting to get the hiragana and katakana learned into my head. I have such a short attention span when it comes to studying and was having difficulty learning the hiragana on paper, so the short drills in this app are great for people with short attention spans. As I made mistakes in the drills along the way, the drills corrected me and I learned, helping me learn the hiragana and katakana even quicker. It also teaches you vocabulary with the characters you learn as you go, so it’s applies what you learn. If there’s one thing to add, it would be a stroke order feature where you can practice writing the characters with the correct strokes by tracing on the phone, definitely on a separate chart from the drill ones. Otherwise this app is awesome! Best so far to learn hiragana and katakana! Maybe add some kanji to learn and drill too?

  • Useful for a quick practice

This is a useful app to quickly run through and practice your hiragana and katakana. I use this in conjunction with another language learning app and I feel that’s the best use for this app - in support of your language learning. It’s fairly basic in its approach but it does a good job of reinforcing what you have learnt.
My only criticism is it doesn’t cover the extended characters with diacritics (ga, za, da etc.) which seems to be the case for most hiragana apps but it would be useful if it could be added in an update.
Innovative approach to ad use - doesn’t interfere at all and encourages you to get things right!
    Recommended.

  • Great app

Love how adverts are employed as a ‘punishment’ after 5 mistakes as opposed to being forced upon you after each drill.

I’ve just spent 40 or so minutes on the app and managed to go all the way through the Hiragana sheet from start to finish with only one ad, a very refreshing change of pace from other ad-driven apps that try and goad you into shelling out for ‘ad-free’ as soon as you’re in.

In terms of improvements it would maybe be cool to have an option to present a translation of the words coming up just so you’re absorbing the meanings too, but I understand this app is mainly just for identification of characters, which it does superbly!

  • Absolutely Perfect

This app has been amazing for practicing the Japanese I’ve been learning. It’s been absolutely perfect. It starts off with just the vowels add more in a little at a time. It pushes you to be able to identify by visual and auditory means. And it reviews the older stuff as it adds in newer stuff so that you never forget what came before.
    And it’s completely free!
And unlike other “free” apps it doesn’t ask you to pay to unlock the the next tier of learning, and it doesn’t spam you with adds after each round of practice. It doesn’t even show you an add after each mistake, it only shows you one after you make 5 mistakes. It puts real steaks on messing up without getting annoying. Which is fantastic!
I don’t write reviews on almost anything, but I must recommend this app. I wholeheartedly thank the creator of this app. It is wonderful.

  • It was very helpful!

I’ve used this app for about two weeks so far and I have been able to memorize all of the Hiragana alphabet! I used it to both help me memorize everything and write everything, but I’m sure I would’ve learned Hiragana in just a few days if I did not use it to also help me write out the characters. For me, I used the app by writing down everything it displayed as I answered each question which is probably why it took me so long. I also did not use it on a daily basis and practiced a few hours at a time. It does not have any ads and also provides numerous examples of words each character is used in, as well as definitions for those words. It is an amazing app and I would recommend it to anyone who desires to memorize the Hiragana and Katakana alphabet!
