Horrible updates - but dev is not dead.

I have spent months to track my progress in Japanese reading using this app. But now with the newest update, all my progress and stats are replaced with arbitrary number. Garbage update…

Update 1: Dev promised to fix the issue. Depending how this goes, I will update my review.

Great Anki Integration

Easy to use and integrates with Anki. Whenever I see a word that I don’t know, with two taps I can get a nicely formatted Anki card added to a deck. The developer promptly fixes issues too.

Good app

Getting crashes in latest update. Even 3.1 was more stable. Also, readings in the reader can be wrong, and will vary from the reading shown in the news article. In some articles there will be 3 or 4 incorrect readings, which can be confusing if you don’t know the word yet.

Absolutely recommend!

Using Manabi Reader lets me read way more efficiently and I’m seeing a huge improvement in the Japanese I’m picking up, + I’m learning faster than my classmates because of it. It’s free/cheap, easily usable, the cross compatibility between Manabi Reader and Manabi Flashcards/Anki is great, the dev is actively updating it, etc. I like to use it to read NHK’s easy news and make flashcards from new words. Definitely check it out!

Good App but WAY TOO GLITCHY

While I love the functionality of the app and would definitely like to support the author, it’s just way to glitchy and buggy. It cannot handle moderate long text without lags and/or glitches.

Edit: Reduced to 1 star… WAY TOO MANY BUGS. I was planning to only use the dictionary to add card to AnkiMobile… Even that doesn’t work either.. Each time you click the dictionary search bar and the app glitches out and get rid of the cursor…

Great For Reading at Any Level - But App Will Not Open

I really enjoy using this app along with its partner app which has the flashcard functionality; but for the past few months I have been unable to open the app. It immediately crashes when I press on it. I only gave it 4 stars for this reason. Hopefully this can be fixed ASAP!

Great app, but

Since the most recent update, it crashes on launch. I can only get the flash card half of this app to open :/ when it did work, I really enjoyed having the option of so many different things to read and having them ranked by difficulty. Very helpful study tool!

3.0 update is excellent

Anki integration is a huge game changer and is what brought me over from the reader app I had been using previously.
I just tested adding an Anki card and everything worked smoothly and intuitively— it’s a really big deal that I can finally one-tap add cards to Anki from my smartphone, since no other reader app on the iOS store does this to my knowledge. I’m glad the price is so reasonable, too— will definitely be recommending to friends!

My one request to the developer: Is it possible to add a “hiragana only” option for adding to a field in Anki? For example, say I want to add the phrase 仮眠をとる to my anki deck. The only options right now are expression (仮眠をとる) and expression with reading (仮か眠みんをとる). It’d be nice to have an option for かみんをとる because of the odd way my Anki card template is set up. Just a little nitpick. Congrats and many thanks for getting 3.0 released!

Glitchy

Just downloaded this app recently and really like it but unfortunately it’s very glitchy. Often when I want to read something, it’ll say “Loading failure. Please try again” or “Unable to verify subscription”. I’m also unable to login to the account I made.

Hi, I'm sorry for the trouble you had with the old version. Please try 3.0 which has been completely rewritten, works offline, and has a more reliable server connection. I've put my all into this update and hope it will now work well for you. Thank you
