  • DX7 Mojo, for free.

Just like the title says: they’ve reproduced the “weight” of the DX7 in a way that most desktop synths have yet to touch. And on top of that there’s a high quality effects section thrown in There are better apps for programming FM from scratch, but if you want the DX sound and that EPiano goodness, it’s here and mind-bogglingly free.

  • I love this app!

FM Player makes me happy. I love being able to use yesterday’s sound with today’s technology. I’ve always wanted a DX7, and now I have one at my fingertips.

Thanks for creating this. I can’t believe it’s free, because it sounds so good, and is so easy to use. Keep up the great work!
  • Wonderful

Unreal. Super clean layout. Easy to use. Great sounds. And FREE!!! The world just became a better place. 🌞

These Devs deserve huge kudos and all of our support. So THANKS Devs!

Go buy their new D1 Synth app too. (I did!)
  • I like it a lot, except for the static

I like the great variety of sounds and tweakability of this app, and Audiokit Synth One, but I get static on both of them, little clicky sounds. Maybe it is because I am using it on a 4th generation iPad. I don't know. I don't have this problem with other music keyboard apps. Do I need a newer iPad to use these apps without the static?

Since I wrote this review I got an iPad Pro, which has a 64 bit processor. The static is gone and the app sounds great, but you have not changed the description in the App Store to indicate that you need a 64 bit iPad to get a really clean sound from it. I would be happy to give you five stars if you would update the description to reflect the actual compatibility of the app. Thanks for creating a great app.

Glad to hear the app is working for you! Thanks for the reminder to update the app description. We will do that in the next update! :)
  • Beautiful

I couldn’t afford a DX7 in the 80’s now I have it on my iPad love the sound all though not too useful as I do all my songwriting on my Mac but it is still nice to have when you are away from the studio and an iPad is way easier to carry around than 40 kg of Mac Pro
  • THIS WILL BE GREAT.

Because these genuine art people are giving their hard work away for free they deserve every compliment they receive. We should all be willing to donate something if we use their other app...SYNTH one. Also completely free. They are working on SYNTH one right now which is incredible. They say they’ll focus on FMPlayer soon. Get SYNTH one before judging it by this apps standards. I’m sure this app will become as good as the other soon.

Thank you for the kind words! FM Player 2 will have sound packs that you can buy if you'd like to donate to the AudioKit / Synth One project. It'll be a great way for people to support the project(s). Thank you for your support! :)
  • Extremely well done!

I still own (and use) my DX7IIFD that I bought in 1989, but it rarely leaves my home studio, which is probably why it still works as good as new. So, if I want to incorporate that unique FM synthesis at a gig or on the road, I’m left with virtual instrument options. There’s two approaches for virtual FM - modeling or sampling (or a hybrid of both). I’ve got a number of satisfactory modeling options on my computer rig that I enjoy and use frequently, but none of them gives me the same exact ‘vibe’ of my hardware, and I’ve never been happy with sampled DX sounds because, even though many are very accurate, they always feel static or sterile to me. Furthermore, I’ve never been happy with any of the DX instruments for iOS. This app sounds fantastic and really captures the character of the DX7 without sounding or feeling like a sampler. And it is really fun and inspiring to play. I will absolutely be using it in my live gigs. My thanks and admiration to the developers and the AudioKit team for providing a free synth that sounds rich and professional, and is useful right out of the box. I also love that it much easier to pack up, carry, set up, and tear down than my good old DX7 beast! Well done!

  • Stumbled on!

I just got the latest edition of Electronic Musician. The first thing I read is the iOS monthly review of the latest apps. I went looking for another synth based on the magazine’s recommendation, and found this one instead.

I have many expensive, paid apps that can either play sample based DX sounds, or create FM synthesis the old fashioned way with virtual operators. Some are 4 op, others are 6+, depending on how many virtual algorithms they are based on. You wouldn’t think that your open source freeware ROMpler would come close to any of those apps, however, I’m stating that these are the best 6 operator samples I have heard in iOS yet! Keep up the awesome work! I’ve been using iOS in live performance for years and have been waiting for this app!
