Like the concept but

Love the concept of saving the external usb c however there must be a bug that after taking a picture it just spins and hangs . Once they get the bugs fixed I will reevaluate. Seems promising

Thanks for using Photon! If you wouldn't mind sending us some more information via the in-app bug reporter or to support@latenitesoft.com, we'd be happy to look in to this issue.

Poor low light

I was expecting to get at least 15 seconds exposure for night time photography of the stars. Only get max of 1 second. Unfortunately, I’m unable to get refunded since I purchased this versus a subscription

FOCUS and Lens Control lacking

I just spent a twilight even at park to test this particular APP out! In many ways I’m impressed with the minimalist yet simple tools and controls exist, but I’m kinda surprised that I have no control over the wide angle, standard and telephoto lens controls!! They already exist in my iOS (13 Pro Max) iPhone, so I’m puzzled at the lack of that very basic professional feature. Please get back with me, maybe a guarantee that you’ll have it NEXT update… I might just spend the $40

Hi there! The lens switcher is located in the bottom right corner of the viewfinder. For additional assistance with the controls, we've produced a handy manual that outlines where everything is and how it works. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask via the in-app bug reporter or support@latenitesoft.com. You can find the manual here: https://photon.cam/help/using-photon-part-1-the-basics/

My new go to!

Beautiful and functional?! Sign me up (literally)!

Pretender

You can tell a real camera from the pretenders by the way it controls white balance. A simple warm/cool slider will get you in the general ball park but eye-balling what you see on the screen is not very accurate. Measuring beats eye-balling every time.

White balance is not simply along a warm/cool plane but also requires the green/red fine tuning. That can’t be accomplished by a simple slider. The only way to get a correct white balance is to measure it in the colour of the light falling on the scene, or in the case of indoor lighting, at the subject position with the existing lighting.

To do that you need a neutral white balance reference card and the ability to sample and hold a reading from the white balance card. In other words Custom White Balance, or White Balance Lock.

In addition, since the white balance lock button will be used so often it needs to be always available right on the main screen, and not buried in a menu somewhere. You simply fill the frame with your white balance card, in the light falling on the subject, tap the white balance sample/lock button and you’re good to go. It’s fast and easy. Bulletproof.

Note: a photographic grey card may work as a white balance card (if the manufacturer claims their card is usable as a white balance card) but be aware that grey cards are exposure tools not colour reference tools so they may or may not be correctly neutral throughout the available light spectrum. I have several grey cards and each is a slightly different colour, none of them correctly neutral.

It is much faster and easier to set the correct white balance at the time of shooting than it is to try to figure out what is wrong with the white balance in editing. In fact you may never get it right in editing.

Another thing conspicuously lacking is any HDR exposure controls. Ideally you would want adaptive exposure brackets rather than the simple equal step exposure brackets. HDR is widely used by serious photographers so this represents another serious lack.

This app is supposedly aimed at serious photographers and for that to ring true the app needs to offer the controls used by serious photographers. Or will it remain a pretender? I’ll wait to see how your app develops but for now I’m discontinuing my subscription. And $49.99 for a camera app! Are you serious?

Addition: the app appears to operate in shutter speed priority. When I set the ISO I expect it to stay where I set it and not keep changing. If some automatic exposure is required then ISO priority is the preferred method. The settings need to be easier to control. Left-right arrows would be preferable to the slider. If a slider is the only way then I want to see the numbers on the slider.

Thanks for taking the time to leave such detailed feedback! I've taken note of your concerns and forwarded them on to the engineers for review.

Amazing photography tool!

It’s SUPER easy to use! The manual shooting gives me full control of how I want to take my photos. I would recommend this to any beginner or professional photographer who wants the convenience of using their iPhone to take DSLR-quality photos!

Amazing camera app!

This is definitely a game changer! You don’t have to have an expensive camera and tons of lens to get the great photos! Just this App!

Best camera app that exists!

I love this camera app! It has given me all the control I need to create professional photos from my phone. It’s so easy to learn to use and has improved my photo quality instantly.

Crash. Crash. Crash.

I took the trial subscription and cancelled it two days later. I can only take so many crashes.

Good start

This app is stable and offers the simple yet powerful interface I’ve come to expect from the Camera+ team, but there’s room to grow. I’ve been a passionate Camera+ fan for years now and I noticed recently that the app is now distributed by some other dev on the App Store. I don’t know the full story, but it seems like the OG team may have lost the app and Photon is them starting fresh. As it stands, it works, but it’s missing 3 key features that will keep me on Camera+ for now. Don’t get me wrong, I like that it’s stripped down (Camera+ can feel bloated) but I’d love to see the following features added down the road:

1. A dedicated Macro mode. If I switch to the .5 lens and play with focus, I can sort of do macro, but the perspective is still off and I’d love to see it “just work” like Camera+ and the stock Apple Camera app.
2. In-App photo library (lightbox) The lightbox is my favorite feature of Camera+. The ability to snap photos and review them before sending them off to iCloud is huge for me.
3. Integration with REC. I love REC. And I love how REC and Camera+ have buttons in the apps that let you switch between them. If Photon is the new hotness, I’d love to see that integration added.

I’ll keep it installed and follow updates as they come. I’m excited for what the future holds!
