  • People need to know more about this app!

This app is great. The only issue I can see is that it’s pretty hard to find the right series and stuff like that. For example, if you see a new video from a creator you like, it’s not that intuitive to find the other videos in the same series. Maybe this can be streamlined in the future?

I won’t take any marks off as the app functions perfectly and it supports some of my favourite creators 😄

  • I really want to like Nebula…

I really want to like Nebula, but I find it incredibly difficult to use.
It does have the good content that I signed up for, and the videos are extremely well made, but I get suggested far more videos that I just don’t care about. Despite having followed a number of creators, I still have to go in search of them, whereas what I really want is them being valued at the top of the Home Screen, so that I can easily click on anything new from them. Instead, my Home Screen is flooded with videos that I’m just not interested in.
I presume this is more an App issue, so hopefully something can be done there.
I’m not saying to go as far as YouTube’s algorithm, but there is a reason for why I have followed who I have followed. Promote me their videos.

  • Short But Loaded with Gap Material

The team does a tremendous job adding material to the bank of appreciated European 19th Century history. You’d think all was quiet between Napoleon’s second exile and the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in 1914. Hardly. The smaller wars and the Franco-Prussian war were lasting consequential preludes to the 20th century’s bad feelings and conflagrations.

Jesse Alexander has been great even from his earlier narrations because his personal interest level in the material is super-high. It is almost as he is doing it for free for the benefit of subscribers.

  • Cast and airplay problems

Can’t cast nebula to my samsung tv, but I can AirPlay. However, if my phone locks (automatically after 30 secs) or leaves the app, the AirPlay will then stop. Making it impossible to watch something. Doesn’t happen with other apps using the same devices.

There is no nebula app for samsung tv, so that is not an alternative either.

Nonetheless, the app as well as its content and the creators is amazing.

  • Love the app could be improved

The content is amazing! Classes and Explainers. I would love it if you added a feature to Auto download new explainer videos (enable for a particular channel and disable for others) some of my favourite creators release videos that I’d like to be downloaded automatically.

Another feature that’ll be great is a “Hide watched Videos” button. This is to remove already watched content from My Library section of the app. These videos can already be accessed from the channel itself so it doesn’t really need to be in my Library.

  • It’s getting better all the time…

There was time when the UI / UX in the iOS app was atrocious- like - so bad that I kept a sub going to support the creators, but watched everything on YouTube lol… It was released too early it seemed, and I suspect they missed many potential subs during those days…

I can only speak for the iOS experience here and compare to YouTube (as thats what I mainly use), but when I went to the Nebula Reddit page and found it full of people with the same complaints as myself, it was also full of Nebula devs assuring they would fix everything they could and get the app better…. And over the past year or so that appears to be what has happened.

The app is usable now (as at date of this review)… still has a work in progress feel about it, and missing some UI functionality that you would think is just standard stuff nowadays, but the UX overall is not too bad.. In fact, it has a couple of little features that make YouTube look a bit old fashioned lol…

The concept is cool - the curated content creators are a solid mix - there is plenty of good stuff to watch. There needs to be ‘something else’ beside YouTube - maybe this could be it.

Keep doing what you're doing guys! Thanks

  • Garbage App Missing Basic Functionality

Cannot manually select video quality. This app is YEARS OLD and they still haven’t added this basic feature. Videos also load extremely slowly and buffer constantly—on wifi, on data, on desktop, on mobile—meaning that it is functionally unusable most of the time anyway. I would advise that the developers stop wasting their time and money on stuff that no one asked for (like “Classes”) and fix the basic problems with their app and service.

  • Poor controls for advancing or skipping back

The Nebula service is outstanding, however the app is not. There is no way to skip forward or back 15 seconds or some other variation… you have to use the slider and hope/pray you get to the spot you want in the playback. I would rate the app 5/5 if it had this basic feature set of sniping forward/backward 15 to 30 seconds.

  • It’s gotten better, still needs a little work

First off I want to say that I legit love supporting creators this way, this project is awesome! Also, the loading issues some 1-year-old reviews mention were a real issue but have been completely resolved, so I can now use this app on a regular basis.

However, there really needs to be a way to tell the player “I really really want the highest resolution and I don’t care how long it takes to load”. Frequently I’ll load a beautifully-made video (the creators on here make great stuff) and the first 10-30 seconds are a 240p mess (this also happens sometimes mid-video).

Aside from that, I’d really like if Nebula could blatantly copy YT’s really nice “drag up to make the video fullscreen, down to make it a miniplayer” feature. If both of these make it into the app I’ll bump this to five stars.

  • Good concept, poor execution

Overall, I like Nebula and the platform’s creators. However, I’m running into a few issues with the iOS app that are fairly irritating.
    1. The app logs you out if your device is connected to a wifi network that cannot access Nebula servers, such as wifi networks aboard planes used for in flight entertainment or free messaging. This makes it impossible to use the app while still being able to receive messages on a plane.
    2. Controls for media that is being displayed on a seperate device via Google Cast are difficult to locate. In other apps, while your device is casting, the current queue and pause/play controls are still where they may be when you are watching the media on your device. However, Nebula returns you to the home screen after beginning a cast, and puts the controls behind a non-obvious cast button. It would be much more intuitive to have a Picture-in-Picture-like display of the thumbnail of the current video, with controls overlayed above it, and the ability to easily manage the upcoming queue, similar to other apps that support Google Cast.

I really like the concept of Nebula, but it would be a lot more useful if these issues were fixed. Thank you!
