Version History of Synology Photos

2.1.0

June 26, 2024

Important Note: 1. Following the update to this version, when backup is enabled, the Synology Photos mobile app will rescan items to check if all files are backed up in the previous version. If any unbacked-up files are found, the mobile app will automatically trigger a backup. This process will not lead to file duplication. What's New: 1. Supports setting up your deletion preference. You can choose to delete files from both your phone and Synology NAS at once or only from your Synology NAS. Fixed Issues: 1. Fixed an issue where users might be signed out unexpectedly when using the Synology Photos mobile app. 2. Fixed an issue where backing up a large amount of files might cause an insufficient storage error.

2.0.1

January 25, 2024

Important Note: 1. A local item will be deleted when you delete its copy from the Synology Photos mobile app. However, if you delete the item directly from your phone's built-in app, the copy will still exist on your Synology NAS. 2. Changes to "Free Up Space” feature: - once a file is backed up or uploaded to Synology NAS, Synology Photos flags it as ready to be freed up from your phone. - if you move the file's copy on Synology NAS to a different Space, you won’t be able to free up the original file from your phone. 3. For users updating from version 1.5: Updating to this version will not trigger duplicating files due to renaming or moving them to a different Space. 4. For users updating from version 2.0: If you have previously renamed the files or moved them to another Space, to prevent them from being backed up again and creating duplicated files, turn off the photo backup. Re-enable it and choose "back up new photos only”. What's New: 1. Supports viewing all photos, regardless of whether they are backed up or not, in the mobile app after backup is enabled. 2. Supports backing up modified photos again to keep all changes after backup is enabled. 3. Supports the notification for out-of-sync changes on the Synology Photos mobile app when moving photos to another Space or deleting them from File Station, Synology Photos web portal, SMB, etc. 4. Supports backing up and uploading multiple files at the same time for better efficiency. 5. Supports different backup options: - Back up new photos only: Back up photos and videos taken from now on. Changes made to previous items will also be backed up as new files. - Resume tasks: Continue the progress of the last backup task. Changes made to previous photos will be backed up as new files. - Scan and back up all photos: If backed-up items have been moved to another Space, renamed, or deleted from Synology NAS, they will be backed up again. You may need to sign out of the Synology Photos mobile app and sign in again to select this option. Fixed Issues: 1. Fixed an issue where a download might not be successful if you leave lightbox mode before it completes. 2. Fixed an issue where the limit of the cache size might be exceeded. 3. Fixed an issue when updating to version 2.0 where crash might happen unexpectedly.

  • Excellent app!

I LOVE the new feature where if I delete a photo in the app it will ask to also delete it from the default iOS photos app so I don’t have to delete twice. Also I love that if I move a bunch of photos to another folder in drive on my computer it will automatically track that and ask if you want to delete them in iOS photos too. I use my phone for my business and personal so it’s helpful when I get home from a building inspection the photos auto backup to my nas and I can drag them to my projects folder using my computer and my phone auto knows. Still waiting on object identification so we can search for car or lake etc.

  • Doesn’t actually backup anymore

Finally fixed the insufficient space bug I’d get about a dozen photos in on a 15k photo backup so it’s at least backing up now. Leaving original review text below. One star off for taking so long to fix and the below mentioned issues with third party drives, et all.

    ——

This used to work well but it’s probably been a year or so. Now it just has an increasing number of photos to backup and the queue never counts down. Honestly, I’m starting to move my workloads off my synology apps given their issues with third party hard drives, per camera licensing fees, and slow bug fixes like this.

  • Backup Suspended. Insufficient Space?!

Update: Synology reached out with a beta link that seems to fix all the issues I list below. My review would/will be 4 stars whenever it gets released, but I’d steer clear until then.

Was really hoping I could backup all my photos to my Synology in an easy way, but it’s constantly suspending (every few minutes) because of “Insufficient space”. I can’t even find any explanation what it means by space. I’m using an M4 1TB 16GB RAM iPad Pro, so “space” shouldn’t be the RAM or mobile storage (657.4 GB free). On my DS1618+ I have 18.9 TB free, and the folder/user have no limitations. I can babysit it and hit retry to proceed, but this whole initial backup could take days. I can’t do this every few mins, for days, so the back up feature doesn’t work. Wondering how this isn’t a much bigger issue for everyone.
