  • Excellent app!

I LOVE the new feature where if I delete a photo in the app it will ask to also delete it from the default iOS photos app so I don’t have to delete twice. Also I love that if I move a bunch of photos to another folder in drive on my computer it will automatically track that and ask if you want to delete them in iOS photos too. I use my phone for my business and personal so it’s helpful when I get home from a building inspection the photos auto backup to my nas and I can drag them to my projects folder using my computer and my phone auto knows. Still waiting on object identification so we can search for car or lake etc.

Hello Aaaaaaattttrrreeesddfg, Thank you for the valuable feedback and feature request. We’ll forward it to development teams and discuss it further internally.
  • Doesn’t actually backup anymore

Finally fixed the insufficient space bug I’d get about a dozen photos in on a 15k photo backup so it’s at least backing up now. Leaving original review text below. One star off for taking so long to fix and the below mentioned issues with third party drives, et all.

    ——

This used to work well but it’s probably been a year or so. Now it just has an increasing number of photos to backup and the queue never counts down. Honestly, I’m starting to move my workloads off my synology apps given their issues with third party hard drives, per camera licensing fees, and slow bug fixes like this.

  • Backup Suspended. Insufficient Space?!

Update: Synology reached out with a beta link that seems to fix all the issues I list below. My review would/will be 4 stars whenever it gets released, but I’d steer clear until then.

Was really hoping I could backup all my photos to my Synology in an easy way, but it’s constantly suspending (every few minutes) because of “Insufficient space”. I can’t even find any explanation what it means by space. I’m using an M4 1TB 16GB RAM iPad Pro, so “space” shouldn’t be the RAM or mobile storage (657.4 GB free). On my DS1618+ I have 18.9 TB free, and the folder/user have no limitations. I can babysit it and hit retry to proceed, but this whole initial backup could take days. I can’t do this every few mins, for days, so the back up feature doesn’t work. Wondering how this isn’t a much bigger issue for everyone.

Dear Synology user, thank you for your patience and understanding. We'll soon release version 2.1 officially, where the backup suspension issues caused by insufficient storage have been fixed. Again, thank you for your patience, and we'll keep improving our product!
  • A step back — UPDATED

Great app overall but this new NAS & iPhotos sync feature should be configurable or completely optional. There are many cases where I have photos on my phone but wouldn’t want them backed up in perpetuity via the NAS (then AWS).

[UPDATE] - Amending my review due to the developer response that they are working on creating a user-facing option to enable / disable the app’s delete from NAS and Apple Photos app capability. I’m confident this will work as expected and it’s great to know that we’re being heard so updating this to 5-stars. Thanks, Synology!

Dear Synology user, We've launched version 2.1 Beta where customizing your deletion preference is available. You can now choose to delete files from both your phone and Synology NAS at once or only from your Synology NAS, while organizing all your photos in one view. Download the new version via installing TestFlight and opening the link (https://sy.to/spmi21) via your mobile device. Kindly find out more information about the feature in our community (https://sy.to/spm21). We appreciate your patience and understanding.
  • Glad it exists! Has some issues, but nothing major.

Thanks for keeping up development of this app! I’m giving it 5 stars just for the effort of producing it and allowing this backup option to exist with the Synology ecosystem, but the app does have some issues. I love the new feature of deleting photos off this app also removes them from your iPhone! I personally love that but can see why people want to have the option to choose how that’s handled on their own, so a setting in the app to change this would be awesome! It’s also cool to see the option of default save location is modifiable. Overall, pretty happy with it and the Synology NAS in general though!

  • Backup suspended and duplication issues

I was really looking forward to this app + my synology nas as an alternative to iCloud, but I was wrong.

    Couple of main reasons:

    1. Duplication - The app file sync management is so bad which it fails to identify files that have been uploaded, especially after logging out. The implication is time wasted waiting for the app to reupload those uploaded files.

    2. Backup suspended because of insufficient space - this is the most annoying error which the developer can easily fix. When this happens, the upload process gets stopped without notification. This means I can’t rely to leave the phone overnight. As user, I can easily fix it by pressing the retry button in which the app will retry by skipping the file that was being uploaded. However, I have to regularly check the upload progress/status (Annoying). Instead of the app waiting for the user to click that retry button, it should automatically retry so that the process doesn’t stop. In addition, the app should have a function to list files in an Album (apple photos) that were skipped so users can manually download to backup those files in that album.

Please hire real product managers and software engineers and start fixing these basic errors that put a bad mark to your reputation.

  • Will it back up?

I recently purchased a Synology DiskStation and have been attempting to back up my photos from iCloud Photos. This chugged along well for the first 50k photos, but recently it will get stuck and try to upload the same photo over and over again very rapidly. The only solution is to delete the photo from my library and then the sync will continue until another photo jams up the sync a few photos later. I’ve left an iPad Pro doing a Focused Sync all night only to find it synced 5 pictures.

It seems like this app needs better error handling—maybe set aside sync failures and try them later rather than just trying them repeatedly.

  • Look elsewhere - basics don’t work

I’m a as much as a Synology fan boy as anyone but this program is just sub par. Firstly I set a custom backup location and then with each iOS app update( I suspect) it defaults back to my personal space and all my photos are now in some random folder that I have to hunt down and then move to my 2023 folder. All it’s got to do is take the photos from my iPhone and put em on my NAS but then when I used the app to show my pals some photos I just get blank images, come on I have a 1/2 TB iPhone and set to unlimited cache and it still randomly decides to down load all my photos or sometimes not. On mobile I don’t need a 48 Megapixel photo just a bloody 100k thumbnail would do but mostly my photos are MIA when I need to show some of my English friends a picture of my cat! Sometimes the UI works and shows folder view then sometimes it doesn’t. I’m on the latest M1 hardware, newish iPhone 14 Pro and it just seems to be a pain to use. Just give me a simply program that can download all my photos 50k to my phone with little thumbnails so I can show my pals a picture of my cat! We don’t need all this sharing, AI recognition, moments stuff - just get the basics to WORK! I suggest reassigning the current team to another project and get some new folks onboard - to just get the basics working!

  • Great and keeps getting better

Been using Synology Photos for over two years, and have been loving it. It has all the basics I need (storing photos easily, running in background, sharing albums, and sharing a shared space with my family. It was missing a few features at first but continues to get better over time. The most recent update to download and convert to JPEG made my wife’s day as it made it possible to convert all our HEIC photos so she could use them in other photo book software. Keep up the great work!

  • So close and yet so far.

This app is exactly what I want, something similar to Google photos that I have stored locally on my nas. But it has serious flaws.

Main problem is that uploads are extremely buggy and slow, Google photos can upload to the internet literally around 100x faster than this can even upload locally. Absolutely forget off site uploads. And it will not run in the background no matter what on iOS.

Browsing does not look at local storage, only what’s online. And it is brutally slow and buggy.

Downloading does not work, I’ve been trying to just download a 15second video clip and it just continuously fails. This could be done on Google photos faster than you can blink.

Features are missing, you can rotate photos… and that’s it, forget any other editing abilities.

I wanted to like this and replace google photos, but at this point all it is is a somewhat lousy way to backup to my nas, it does not have any usability past that.
