User Reviews: Mullvad VPN

  • split tunneling please

iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 16. Love Mullvad VPN for its speed, ease of use and compatibility with various operating systems. Also their business model is great. Not offering deceptive multi year discounts and not doing sponsored reviews, and having independent audits on a regular basis.

The one option I miss in iOS (and iPadOS) is split tunneling. Several apps I use are not VPN friendly so I have to disconnect from the VPN to use them. Split tunneling would be much better. Looking forward to it being implemented as soon as possible.
  • Not what it used to be..

Used to be fast, now the speeds go up and down throughout the day, it gets rather annoying having to adjust to a new server multiple times per day.

One of the great things about Mullvad was letting you refresh the wire key, but they’re letting you have even less control as they’ve taken that away now. (Who told you guys people wanted that?!)

If you ever heard the rumor that Mullvad gave you more control over your vpn and that you’d get fast connections, not anymore. It’s becoming quickly like the rest of the junk VPNs.
  • Can’t connect to many sites

I like Mulvad on my Mac but on iOs I constantly have to turn it off and then open the site or app I want to use because it just won’t connect to anything. After connecting I can sometimes turn the vpn back on and it works. Not the best way to have to do things. Surely this could be fixed, its a big problem!
  • Please add OpenVPN tunnels to iOS app

I’ve been using this VPN for a month or so and noticed that my connection on iOS has deteriorated. I have the Mac OS app installed and saw that sometimes Mullvad connects to an OpenVPN via Shadowstock, which works fine. The support told me that iOS app does not support tunneling and I have to install OpenVPN app and import configurations.
Lately I began to notice that it takes an OpenVPN + Shadowstock to another country for the MacOS to stay connected. This just could not be done on iOS given the Mullvad app. Please add new features!
  • Does not connect reliably

As many others report, the app will not connect to a server most of the time despite saying it is connected. You will have no internet connection at all and must either reconnect several times or regenerate your key. Neither of these is fast. The app hasn’t been updated in over half a year and that is leading to some instability, hopefully they eventually get around to iOS.
  • The best

I have subscriptions from Express VPN and Norton VPN, but, lately, both, don’t deliver a good VPN, the rented servers from both VPNs don’t have a right localizations.
I started to have MULVAD, and this is the best compared with the other VPNs if you need speed, safety and localization.
  • great! just one issue…

iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 16.1.2

Love Mullvad VPN for its speed, ease of use and compatibility with various operating systems. The split tunneling option is really handy as well (and would be really welcome in iOS/iPadOS but I assume Apple would have to allow that before in can be implemented by Mullvad).

Also, Mullvad’s business model is great. Not offering deceptive multi year discounts and not doing sponsored reviews reflects the kind of integrity I look for in a VPN company. Not to mention independent audits which they have on a regular basis. These are the reasons I choose Mullvad and recommend it over other VPNs - though your use case may be different from mine and a VPN with a different set of features might be a better fit for you.

I do however have an issue with the VPN switch in iOS (and iPadOS) settings while connected to Mullvad. A good number of apps don’t work with Mullvad so I sometimes need to turn off the VPN for a minute. That used to work OK but now the VPN switch in settings immediately turns back on after I turn it off.

I realize that this may be a problem with iOS (and iPadOS), not with the Mullvad app. But if there is anything you can do to remedy this issue, your help is appreciated.

    Keep up the great work!
  • flat rate of $4.99 is a bargain

flat rate of $4.99 monthly without commitment to long term period is just a fantastic. But… there is a cost for it… speed is far less then competitors… for instance I used in the past ExpressVPN but it cost twice as much but it was 10 times faster, NordVPN was also great not as fast as Express but still great. if you need that for mainly messages, voice calls etc you might even not notice the difference, but when you start watching a video, there is a big difference… last think want to mentioned that it seems like mullvad vpn does not drain battery as much as other VPN’s even more expensive, not sure how doest this works. maybe because it’s slightly slower? 😁 but overall would recommend it
  • Cheap, fast, reliable VPN

No annoying fees or locked-in subscriptions. Cancel whenever you want, only 5 Euros a month. Fast, great connection, lots of locations to choose from, lightweight. I’ve had no problems with it and I’ve been using it for a few months now.
  • The Big Dee

Easy to set up and use. Much faster than Express and Nord (which I subscribe to) when using the closest server. One of three top VPNs according to Consumer Reports. The other two weren’t worth my time. Just like CR, I tell it like it is. Also, less expensive than the above mentioned products. That’s all for now! Rock on✌🏻
