User Reviews: Mullvad VPN

  • Great VPN Terrible App

The service itself is peerless. The app to access this service is amateurish at best. You have to use it in portrait aspect ratio, even if your device is locked to landscape. Logically, when your month is up, you can’t access the internet. Illogically, you cannot terminate your connection to the VPN server when your subscription is up, so the app doesn’t allow you to access the internet to buy another month. Even when you deactivate the VPN in settings, the app automatically turns it back on and kills your internet connection. You have to buy more time on a device that isn’t using the service in order to use the service. Additionally the app is simplistic and visually ugly. I would not accept this app if a student submitted it to me for a coding class. Mullvad either does not care about providing a quality user experience or they trusted this app’s creation to interns and never bothered to check their work.
  • No iPad version/freezes

This is an iPhone version. Using it on the iPad makes come up in a small window in portrait mode. Very frustrating as the screen rotates. It’s also a hit and miss when trying to connect. Sometimes it connects immediately, other times it freezes and needs to be killed and started again!

I wish Mullvad pays more attention to updating this app, making it universal to work properly on the iPad and to iron the freezing bugs.
  • No gimmicks fast reliable VPN

Mullvad is a no nonsense VPN. No pricing or extras gimmicks. It is fast and barely impacts my battery life which is the reason I switched from another provider. Love the idea of a flat monthly fee without long-term commitments. Choose your location and let Mullvad do the rest. You can experiment with the server choices for a given location to find the optimal speed. At home I have not noticed a meaningful drop in speed, but if I quantify it it is about 10% when comparing best speed without it and best with it which is excellent for a VPN. Don’t use it for streaming movies so can’t speak to this function. Mainly want an extra layer of security especially when joining a public Wifi or minimize being tracked to bombard me with ads based on my online activity. Looking forward to seeing how it performs if I get to travel overseas once the pandemic eases. The app does the job, but please make it fun! Have that mole tunnel through a map ;) When I cut the umbilical cord from FB and all Google products perhaps I’ll be free :)
  • Fast and reliable

Speeds on wire guard are super fast and mullvad never disconnects when your phone goes from wifi to LTE or viceversa. My wifi at home comes in at 480 Mbps without a VPN, and with Mullvad wire guard it still works at 420.
  • Absolutely terrible.

If you’re unfortunate enough to tap the “Refresh Key” button from 6 am until 12 pm, this app is useless. It will say it cannot regenerate the key, then, you can’t use the internet. Why? Because your VPN is broken. You will be forced to turn off the VPN. One morning I had to log all the way out and log back in just to get this VPN to work.

I love Mullvad and I love it’s policies but this is just unacceptable. I can’t be without internet for 6+ hours at a time because I tried to refresh my key in the morning. I shouldn’t have to uninstall and reinstall the VPN, change the location and log out and log back in to use the service that I paid for. I will be taking my money elsewhere, which is a shame because Mullvad has unparalleled privacy.
  • So very pleased with this!

Oh, this is SO much more convenient and FASTER than openVPN with Mullvad! Quick, easy choices about what location to select, grandfathered memory about your last location selection, easy disconnect or very quick location change. I’ve also noticed less VPN limiters (aka ‘we know you are using a VPN, Stop It’) when surfing, compared to using Mullvad through openVPN.
  • No iPad version

While this runs on an an iPad, it’s a pure iPhone app and not native. This means it runs in a little box exclusively in portrait orientation. If you’re using the VPN to watch video in landscape, look forward to a lot of frustration as the screen rotation (and app switcher controls) get all screwed up.

I’d much, much rather just take the few minutes to set up the VPN configuration in Settings and manage it from there than deal with this junky app.
  • Great but

It's nice to have a dedicated app instead of setting up profiles on the device, but the connection is very intermittent at times, a problem I've never seen when using OpenVPN, going to stick with that for the time being.
  • Amazing VPN

I’ve been a Mullvad user for over a year and I’ve been very happy with their service. I am very happy with their new iOS app. It’s easy to use and uses WireGuard by default which is superior to OpenVPN standard used by some other VPN clients. I highly recommend this VPN service.
  • Some annoying bugs

So this is a decent first attempt. I’ve used Mullvad for quite some time on my laptop and love it. This isn’t quite there.

The biggest problem is that the vpn doesn’t fully connect when you reopen your phone. It will show a connection, but you have no connection to the internet. The only way to fix this is to literally go and turn it on and off again, which is not “a feature” believe me.

To make matters worse, this does not happen on the iPad. iPad actually works wonderfully.

Finally, there’s no way in the app to reach out to Mullvad like there is on Non-mobile. That’s an oversight and a poor one. They already take a while to respond. So making you search for connection information on top of releasing new apps they have to support is a terrible idea.

But when Mullvad works, it’s the best. It’s hard to do better when protecting your privacy.
