Please fix the app

For how expensive the bbq guru products are, this app is a failure and needs to be improved. I consider myself to be fairly tech savvy, but after my first couple of uses the controller would not stay connected to the Wi-Fi for more than a few minutes at a time. I even bought a range extender to see if that was the problem, but still no dice. It works ok (but still not great) for controlling the temperature within Bluetooth range, but overall the performance is unacceptable.

Unreliable app diminishes nice hardware

I upgraded to the UltraQ after years of using an earlier BBQ Guru temp controller. Though the new hardware is nice, you’re locked into using this app which is clunky, bug-ridden, and unreliable. You can never tell if you’re actually getting updated data from the controller—and often, in my experience, you don’t—so you have to go out to the grill to check it. Adds stress and frustration to what used to be a fun hobby.

UPDATE: BBQ Guru responded to my review and offered to help. I replied shortly thereafter, and since nothing but silence. In my experience this is typical of how this company treats is customers. Strongly recommend you don’t purchase their products.

Hi JeffM504. I am so very sorry to hear this. I asked customer service to reach out to you, but they are having a hard time finding your information in our system. Would you please email customerservice@thebbqguru.com so we can help you out ASAP?

Hoping for improvements

I love this temp controller! The only issue I’m having is the app will shut down out of nowhere? I’m thinking that maybe a update would fix this?
I’m a loyal customer, I’ve got the CyberQ and the CyberQ cloud. I’m constantly having to go back near the cooker to get the Bluetooth to reconnect. I’m worried if I need to leave and use WiFi it’ll fail.

It Works..Kinda.

The lack of alarms on the iPhone is awful. The ultraq has no other receiver, is the intention for users to wake up for an email notification on over night cooks?

On the bright side I haven’t had the issues with connecting to WiFi others have. That being said a major flaw is that there is no way to clear the temp alarms in the app if you go over temp on WiFi. The displays get marked red and stay that way no matter where you tap (annoying if there was a temporary spike that evens out).

Response from developer

Hello lucidmatt, thank you for your feedback. At this time there is no audible alarm through the app, only on the control itself. We do have text and email notifications, but I understand your concern with overnight cooks and will pass you feedback along to our developers. The alert should clear in the app. Please make sure your app is updated to the current version, 1.33.5. You can check this in the app by clicking on the hamburger menu. If you are on the current version and still experiencing this issue please contact our customer support team to resolve this for you.

Horrible

I would pay for a working BBQ Guru app if it meant I’d get reliability. It’s extremely difficult to connect/stay connected to WiFi. Even standing in front of my Ultra Q I have to wait minutes for it to my Bluetooth to pair with the device while holding the phone right next to it. The share my cook website is extremely inconvenient. I wish I had known all this before I bought this $300+ device. Please please please don’t waste your time or money.

Trash

I love my Guru controller, but man this app is trash. My controller never connects to WiFi. No matter how many times the app tells me it was successfully connected. As soon as I’m out of Bluetooth range I can no longer check temps. You’d think for as much as you guys charge for the controllers you could program for them a bit better.

Works great

Excited to get this new controller and it works great. Any bugs were fixed with the latest update.

Am a loyal customer, but this app needs help

I was so excited to get this for Father’s Day to upgrade my old device. My biggest issue was always trying to get my WiFi connection to work so I could monitor my cook when out of Bluetooth range. This app simply doesn’t work reliably. And the worst part is that with the new sleek ultraq design it is a total pain to make adjustments to your settings without the app. So somehow the whole experience is WORSE! Incredible.

The irony is that when I’ve got my pit going it is my time to sit back and relax. And instead I am screwing around with an unreliable interface all afternoon.

Hire an app designer and make your software as good and reliable as your awesome devices. Have some respect for your customers who are counting on a premium product when paying premium prices. Please!!!

Great App

I just upgraded to the UltraQ from my older cyberQ and this app is such a great benefit to the new temperature controls compared to the old WiFi only connections. Right out of the box it asked me to update the firmware which took only a couple of minutes. Connecting through Bluetooth was quick and easy and the option to record your cook over WiFi was another great addition to monitor my cook. In my excitement to get started I forgot to plug in the fan and got a friendly alert on my Apple Watch that there was a fan malfunction, saved me a big headache when getting started. No bugs or issues during my 9 hour cook on my Big Green Egg. BBQ Guru has made it a lot easier for me to get the perfect cook.

Still a long way to go

The hardware is fantastic, but this app still has so long to go. It contains so many bugs and it is not user friendly. Takes several attempts to adjust temperature selection, does not send iPhone notifications, only lagging emails and doesn’t have a food temp database like other apps. Great product for sure, but for the $350 price, needs much more investment in this app. Almost ruins the value of why you pay so much.
