Great food inventory app

I’ve been looking for an app that is intuitive and easy to use, to keep track of my freeze dried food inventory. This is that app. One of my favorite features is the ability to create custom locations and custom places within those locations. The only thing I would personally like to see added in a future revision would be the ability to add sub categories.

EDIT: with the addition of tags, a subcategory field isn’t necessary. Keep up the good work!

Hi Scott Haines, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave write us this fantastic! FoodShiner was designed since the beginning to make it easy to organise your food inventory in a way to easily find exactly in which drawer you did store it, this is especially very crucial in case of freezer so you quickly find what you need fast without taking out all the food looking through it. We have already scheduled in our roadmaps the feature to add sub-categories, this will soon be available, in the mean time the ready to release version 2.5.0 have tags support where you can assign many tags to a product, making it even more powerful to organise and search for your products. Fantasic app

This is a fantastic app for keeping track of food items in your pantry, freezer, fridge or whatever. I’ve been using it for about 6 months and I’ve had a great experience. Its got a slight learning curve, but its easy to catch on to. Its very customizable so you can make it work for any situation. And even though its geared towards food, you can actually use it to inventory anything. Just set up your own products and storage areas. You can even take your own pictures to set up your own products, food or not. Hope the developer doesn’t mind non-food use! I use it for my freezer and pantry and I highly recommend this app. The developer is highly responsive to email. He needs more US users, and no, I have no connection to the developer.

So much more needed

need to be able to edit catigories and storage names, or even get rid of those that dont apply like freezer fridge and pantry. as those dont apply to everyone but we are stuck with them. Be able to update quonites and items by just clickimng on those items. be able to change catigories of items with out having to make a new item list as well as be able to deleat the item if they become no longer needed. i gave a 3 cause its an ok platform but the item ubove will be a reason i will drop the star rating to 1 and deleat the app. so get to it developers. you have a lot of work just to please one customer. see how long it takes you cause i am looking for another food inventory app as i write this.

Hello Dr. McBride, Literally all of your requested features are already implemented. FoodShiner heavily uses on macOS context menus. Here you’ll have the chance to edit items in inventory lists. Used on storage names, shopping lists… you can edit or delete them of course in the sidebar. In the settings of FoodShiner you can edit and remove categories, shops, and mich more. Please don’t hesitate to contact me via support@foodshiner.app if you have further questions. Kind regards Idriss M’Rabti

so helpful

i have trouble feeding myself everyday because of my adhd. unless food is directly in front of me, i’ll forget to eat entirely.

i started to keep photos of food in my camera roll to show myself what i have in the kitchen and remind myself to eat. but this was really messy and i couldn’t really add info to the photos.

this is SO much easier and simple. whenever i get groceries, i enter items into the app as soon as i put it away. when i open something or use something up, i make sure to enter it in. now when i know i should eat but can’t find the energy, i open the app and look at what i have. this helps my executive functioning get going.

i still have days where i forget to eat but knowing what i can eat and deciding not to eat is still SO much better than when i didn’t know what to eat, didn’t want to go check, and just gave up on eating.

a few things i’ve noticed and have suggestions for —
- it’s kind of clunky to share with people in your household. you have to share each storage space and each list individually. it’s clunky but not totally unusable. i wish you could just share a “home” and then all the spaces or lists in that home is shared.

- i wish there was a tagging system! there is a category system where you can categorize things into vegetables, dairy, snacks, etc. you can even make your own categories. but! you can’t put something in multiple categories. i want to be able to tag things as a kind of meal like “breakfast” or as part of a recipe like “deli sandwich”. then if i’m looking for what to eat for breakfast, i just have to filter by its tag. if i’m checking to see if i have everything to make a deli sandwich, i just have to filter by its tag.

- i wish it was easier to add unique products. you have to go through the motions of searching something in the database before you can click to add a unique product. and if you happen to type something that’s already in the database, there is no option at all but to click that search result. like if we could have FoodShiner’s database along with our own personal database that the user populates, that would be really cool.

- i LOVE the stats feature. i kind of wish there were more robust stats like which space gets thrown more? consumed more? what item runs out really fast? that kind of thing.

5/5 all the way though! please donate to the creators! ❤️

Hi khatru75, Thank you for using FoodShiner and with that trying to prevent food wastage. And I’m very thankful for your wonderful review. It take some days for reviews to show up on the AppStore. Good, but…

I don’t want to be bothered with expirations, so I turned ‘require expiration dates’ off.

Used to be fine.

Now it doesn’t bother me, it justs enters it as today’s date and then always displays an annoying red date. Not what I want, not what I expect.
Reported to support quite some time ago, still no response.

Hi MarkLeedsUK, Thank you for reporting the issue, I could reproduce it and it has been already fixed on the version 2.4.3 that’s is going to be release very soon. Best regards, Idriss

For a free app, there are a lot of great features

I just recently downloaded this app and I'm very impressed so far. I gave it 5 stars because as I said in the title, for a free app, there are a lot of great features. It also deserves a tip IMO as it's a very well built app.

That being said, it would be awesome if lists in the native Reminders app could be imported to the Shopping Lists in yours. I use Siri all the time for this.

Additionally it would be awesome to be able to bulk move all the items from the shopping list to storage.

Thanks for such a great app!

What’s in the freezer?

Take the guesswork away with this awesome app. Itemise your food as it goes in and out of the freezer, fridge, or pantry. Great to help you inventory what you have on hand, and what you’re running low on. I’ve searched high and low for an app like this - where others have failed this app has excelled. Bravo!

Exactly what I was after

I wanted a simple food inventory app that let me add, categorise and easily edit a list of all the food in my house so I can stop wasting so much food. I don’t need a meal planner or to track my eating for health reasons or anything like that, I just want to stop wasting food. A way to manage expiry dates is a plus.

I’ve only just started using this app, but so far it’s perfect. I haven’t found any bugs, and I contacted the developer with a query and got a really helpful reply within 24 hours.

I don’t do things by halves, so when I decided I wanted an app, I downloaded about 10 apps to test them out and this is the one that worked the best for me. Unless something goes weirdly wrong when I start using it more (in which case I’ll update this review, so if it’s not updated, it means it still works well!) then I highly recommend it.

Best of all, no identity tracking!

Some of the things I liked in this app that I didn’t find (all of them) in any other app:

- simple, uncluttered interface
- ability to reuse the same product for different locations (e.g have a jar of pesto in the fridge and another in the cupboard) without the app getting confused
- have multiple items under the same category with different expiry dates attached to each, but they are grouped (e.g. 2 blocks of butter, one expires in a month, the other in 2 months)
- unlimited use of app for free with no subscription (though donations are possible)
- no ads, no annoying pop ups or “helpful hints” that get in the way - change the way the data is displayed with one click to storage location, expiry date, food category etc, some other apps made this complicated to do
- no data tracking / identity tracking
