How To section???

I am not given an option to delete an item from inventory when we use it. I’ve looked online for help with no results. The barcode scanner worked sometimes but not on all items—even if I’d already scanned one of the same item previously. I’m not finding this very user friendly.

Barcode scanner works like a charm. Easy to use.

Update: The barcode scanner works very well. Definitely impressive. We'll be using this software to track all our pantry items. Thank you to the developer for responding and explaining the settings.

We have been looking for a way to track the food we have in our pantry. So often we forget what we have and buy more before using the old. Today is the first day of trying this app. So far so good. We'd love to see an option to use a remote barcode scanner. The app currently has you hold the item in front of your computer camera. Scanning would be much faster if we could use our handheld scanner. Anyway, pleased so far. Love that the information is stored on our computer and doesn't require loading on our phones.

Hi Pepperh1, Thank you for using FoodShiner and with that trying to prevent food wastage and save the planet. Bluetooth scanners are supported already. At the moment it’s a minor integration but works quite good if your Bluetooth scanner acts like a keyboard for the Mac. In the settings of FoodShiner (general section) you’ll find the possibility to change from “camera” to “Bluetooth” and in this case you put the cursor in the barcode field and use your Bluetooth scanner to scan the barcode. Like so far. Wish it had remote scanner capability.

We downloaded this app because it is a desktop version. We aren't fans of cloud storage. It was easy to install and start using. The one thing we wish it had was the ability to use a wireless barcode scanner with it. It is time consuming to bring each item to our computer and hold it up to the camera. I'm really surprised this app is free. I think as they get more users the database will grow. Hope they survive.

A bit of work to set up but worth it.

I hate it when I go to the pantry or fridge to use an item only to find that it has expired or past its best before date. With today’s high grocery prices I like the idea of decreasing my food waste.
Initially there is a bit of work to get all of your items entered, then after that, you only add new purchases and delete what you have used.,
The app is simple to use and has an impressive items list when the barcode is scanned. (It also has a shopping list that I don’t use because I am an Anylist subscriber).
What I really like is that you set how long you want to be notified before an item is about to expire. When I get the notice, I plan to use it in the very near future and don’t throw anything out. Brilliant.

Best pantry/fridge/freezer inventory app I’ve found!

I’ve used several different apps of this type and all were lacking in some respect. So far, this app has all I’ve been looking for. It’s very easy to use and customizable. The developer is very responsive to questions and improvement suggestions. It syncs very well between devices and it’s easy to share lists with others. I really like that there is also a Mac version! It uses donations instead of subscriptions and I will definitely utilize that function!

Top Notch

This is a criminally underrated app that has been consistently implementing new Apple APIs that bring great usability to the end user. Using the native CloudKit is nothing short of genius because otherwise we would just have to create yet another account. I applaud your privacy policy too. The business model is also quite refreshing in a sea of subscriptions, but I gave an 'enormous tip' anyway and honestly might do so again. I really hope this app is maintained long-term as it is hands down the best grocery/pantry app. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for developing this stellar app.

Great App but would love universal search

This app is fantastic and definetly deserves using the Tip function. I plan to do that on a regular basis as a great alternative to a subscription model. I would love it more if the search funciton searched all the storage locations instead of just the one you are currently in. Some items can be located in the freezer as well as the fridge or panty and this would make it easier to find. Another helpful improvement would be to allow multiple shops under a shopping list. For example, I created a Wholesale Club shopping list with Sams Club and Costco. Some items are unique to each club, but some can be bought at either.

Can’t find products

I have just scanned four different items from my pantry. Campbell’s condensed soup, hidden valley, ranch seasoning, Lipton diet ice tea and Contina tomato paste. The only one that came up on the scanner was the Lipton diet ice tea. So how is this going to help me keep track of everything else in my pantry if it can’t recognize national brands?

FoodShiner uses the OpenFoodFacts database and additionally those products that have been added (and if checked shared) by other FoodShiner users. It’s usable completely for free and don’t track you or your data - in this case you „pay“ with providing some time to enter the products only one time. Super Awesome!!!

This little app is PERFECT…and it’s FREE???…I would definitely pay good money for this app…after all…if it helps ME save on food…why not??
I looked at A LOT of apps.
This one works well (it scans the barcode beautifully) and has record of everything I’ve tried to scan except my local only grocery store brand.
Thank you SOOO much for this awesome app!!
