Only fantastic.

I was looking to find an app that would alert me when foods are about to expire; because who regularly checks this? What an incredible find when I downloaded this app. It is super easy to use and is very flexible. (It even has a rudimentary shopping list that I don't use because I have been using Anylist for a long time) I can't express enough how impressed I am with this app. Looking for any negative aspects but can't find any*. It was a good idea for the developer to make it free to use with no in app purchases other than sending tips. I might not have tried it otherwise. If you continue using the app (and you will), I encourage you to support the developer by sending them a tip: you decide how big or small. Ok I've gushed enough, just download it and be thankful you did. *Tiny issue: I live in English Canada and when I scan the barcode, the description is displayed in French.

I offer all functionality for free because I want to make the barrier as low as possible to use an app like FoodShiner and initial price is the biggest barrier. My goal and why FoodShiner exists is to help preventing food wastage as much as possible! The data from the barcode comes (if it was not added to FoodShiner before from a different user) from openfoodfacts.org. It could be that this data only exists in French, I try to load the data in the language of your iPhone but if its not available I load the data in the language that is available. Don't hesitate to contact me via support@foodshiner.app if you have questions, miss some functionality (especially what's missing to convert you from Anylist) or if you have problems on using FoodShiner. Amazing - privacy, organized, helpful!

Privacy was never an issue downloading this app which is of upmost importance for me. Love love love this app. It allows me to keep my pantry organized so easily. I have a terrible habit of buying food and not using it, it expires and I throw it out, and the cycle continues. So having this app really helped me keep track of the products and their expiry dates, I’m getting better at using all the food I buy, thanks! Keep continuing to improve this app although no complains from me!

Does everything I need it to

I downloaded this because I was looking for an app to help control our food budget and stop us from having a freezer full of 5 year old, unusable food. And it does everything I need, with the barcode scanning being largely on point, if a litte over-eager at times.

What would make this a 5-star app for me would be being allowed to share the database with my husband. He does the shopping, so it's good for him to know what needs to be restocked - but we collaborate on meals, so it's good we both have access to the same database. I don't see a way to add someone.

Hi Araquen, Thank you a lot for using FoodShiner to avoid food waste. I have a good new for you FoodShiner already offer the ability to share data with many users. If you have already shared your reminders or notes in Apple apps with other users FoodShiner uses the same way to share storages or shopping lists. In order to share a storages or a shopping list, iCloud Sync need to be activated, you can check that on the settings of FoodShiner, the next step it to right click (long press in iPhone or iPad) on the storage or a shopping list then on the contextual menu choose the "share", you get a screen where you can choose the users to invite by using a mail or any messaging application that is supported. Terrible

While the app was easy to use and fun to scan the barcodes of my items, I couldn’t for the life of me get rid of the expiration dates on each item. After I switched off the expiration date in the settings it deleted all my products that I had scanned in. I’m not going to spend another two hours rescanning all my items again, instead I deleted the app.

FoodShiner normally at the start asks if you would want to use iCloud if you did choose to use it then we can recover also all your data. Useful app

As useful as this app is, it still doesn’t sync properly between the devices after the latest update. For instance, the item that was consumed on the iPhone still shows on the iPad and on the Mac even though the status shows as synced.
The last update seems to fix the sync issue. Thank you.

Hi Jirid, I'm sorry that FoodShiner is not working as it should, the sync problems is something that I also did experience myself while using the app. Gladly I could reproduce these issues on my test environment and they should be fixed on the new released version 2.3.5. "The field to adjust the expiration date when a product is marked as open shows today date instead of the expiration date of the product."
Bad idea, not all of the products need to automatically change the expiration date to the open date. I wish there was a choice, the way it was or the new way. I definitely prefer the 'old way'.

Very flexible and great for what I needed

I really like this app. When I started thinking I wanted to track our food use and keep track of what we have I started looking for apps. Wow there are a lot and none seem to be what I wanted. I gave this a try because it was free and had mostly positive reviews. I really like it. First of all I would def pay a couple dollars for it. It can do almost everything I want with a little work. This works to organize much more than food. I use it for paper products, cleaning supplies and even essential oils. Very versatile. The bar code scanner is nice feature.

If there was some changes it would be 5 stars. 1) would like to add categories while entering a product, not having to close out and go back to settings 2) be able to delete a category incase u change the way things r organized. 3) I would like Manufactures and Product name to be different lines. I don’t care necessarily what brand toilet paper I have but that I have two packages. But I would want to know what brand of shampoo I had because everyone in the house uses different ones. 4) ability to enter more info like qty and how it comes. Like the number of trash bags in a box. Yes I could do it already by selecting pieces. I would like to know I have 2 boxes of trash bags each containing 50 bags. Maybe one is a 30 Ct and one 50ct. Yes this is micro managing but it would be nice. 5) VERY Important- goes back to point 3. I want my list alphabetized by product name not brand. Like coco powder then sweetened milk; Not Eagle brand sweetened condensed milk then Hersheys Coco powder. Just a few ideas I think would make this just a bit easier to use.

Hi Kooldolphins, thank you for your kind review - the idea behind FoodShiner is to lower the barrier for trying out apps to prevent food wastage - a big problem for the environment these days - worldwide. 1) You can add categories while entering new products, try it out, you're not going to loose any data. 2) Products, Categories, General Products and Stores can be managed in the settings of the app. In the overview screen of the app choose the menu icon (three dots in a circle on the top right corner) and choose "settings". 3) Thank you for the idea, I'm going to take it into consideration for a future version. 4) The Detail information for products are already on the roadmap and will be available in one of the future versions (latest 2.4) If you have further ideas how to improve FoodShiner don't hesitate to contact me via support@foodshiner.app Best regards Idriss M'rabti

Save food, money and it free!

Help me from buying to much and using what I got, so now I don’t end up wasting food.
Plus side it free and is better than other paid ones, yes you can tip and will be in the near future.
Only small complaint there no “Use by date” so have to use “Expiration date” which the app has, not idea but not a deal breaker and no star off because of it.
