Was going great until….

I’ve been using Varo for 5+ years now, it is the only bank I go through, until I got a new job. My new employers offer direct deposit like any other employer, but they didn’t except my bank, Varo, so I had to get a paper check. Which is okay, but Varo takes over a week to deposit a check. Because of this, all of my bills were late, and hit with late fees. I tried to ask if the money could be deposited a day early, one day, so I wasn’t charged a late fee, and of course the answer was no, what should I expect? I opened up a Huntington Bank account, someone my employer will go through, and closing my Varo Account. I can get paid up to 2 days early with direct deposit, but I can’t even get my money from a paper check given to me from my employers. Just one day is all I needed, and bam! Almost $100 in late fees. Don’t go through Varo, First Citizen and Huntington Bank offer to open an account all online, really simply. I just did it myself, save yourself the trouble I’m going through with Varo. After being a customer for 6-7+ years, I thought I would be valued a bit more. Here I thought Varo was the future of banking, nope just another bank toying with their customers. My new bank might play games too, but at least they don’t hold my money from me.

Used to be almost perfect & amazing, was the best free fastest mobile banking app

Fast simple cool designs absolutely free & fast with safe credit building and so much other features.
BUTTTTTTTT the recent updates have ruined the banking app, I might have to start using one of my other 12 free mobile banks I have…. Unfortunately it’s sad. The long load times now are crazy, I can’t log in, it keep saying “Our wires got crossed we’re working on getting this fixed” which is so annoying and I never had this issue or any other issue with this app until a couple months ago or the latest updates actually and it’s so annoying. If this isn’t fixed soon I’m done using this bank I have been loyal for years for this?!?!? On top of you gotta make $2,500 and so much more to get benefits or access to money or borrowing just a decent amount. Other apps, competitors such as Chime have been updating their app to have way more better features including way less deposits required for benefits, access to paycheck early even if it’s not the entire thing and with low fees, low borrow fees, faster credit building, same safe credit building options. It’s really unfortunate to see this app go down hill, become slower and have technical issues, been using for like 4 years and I’ve told over 30 people about this amazing app, but if these issues aren’t fixed it’s not as good as it once was. All the deposits are almost twice other banks to get benefits or borrow and the borrow fees higher too.

Do NOT use this company!!

I have been with varo bank for about 4 years now and they are NO Good!! Someone wrote me a $12 check years over two years ago now and they stop payment in the check. I covered it and ever since then I can not send money to anyone nor pay a bill out of my acct. So I can’t use there varo to anyone option and will never be able to either as they can not override it they say. NOW someone hacks my acct and money is fraudulently taken from my acct. I file a dispute. Now I am told I can not get the provisional credit because I did not find the issue within 12 days of it being used and once again they can not override it!! So my acct is negative because they over drew it, an option I am not supposed to have anyway! So now I have to wait for 90 days for this dispute to be settled and they shut down my card but sent a new one with the same number, that’s a lot of help, and because my acct is in the negotiate it’s going against my credit score! I ask for a corporate number and they don’t have one they are allowed to give me!. I have been with them for years and they do NOT take care of their customers and their is Zero protection they give to you or your money. Don’t trust their advertisement because sue it is a lie. Our money is important to all of us because we work hard for it. Don’t let this company keep you from YOUR money! DO NOT USE Them! You will regret it just like me!

Would give 0 stars if I could

Where to start? I banked with Varo for years. It was such a huge hassle always getting my money - can’t take cash out of ATMs, can’t transfer anywhere online, I think they don’t even have a savings acct option …..
I eventually had to get a “real” bank account with BMO just to be able to access my own money on a regular basis when I needed it.
My biggest problem is I submitted a dispute for like $30 for a scam business that never sent me the product. After reaching out to BBB and giving Varo all the info they needed, they still wouldn’t give me back $30. This is not a huge charge. This is $30. Literally …. Varo are you broke ?
So in calling and asking for assistance with this dispute, it’s basically impossible to get anyone on the phone. I had to call 22+ times just to reach a human being. I get it, we all hate phone calls but when I need to speak to someone, I need to have that option as a customer of the service. So finally when I FINALLY got a human being, he tells me I can’t even cancel through him! I have to physically cancel online which is exactly what I wanted to avoid because how am I going to get the rest of my money out of the account now?
It’s just another scam company. Will definitely be reporting to BBB - they can go to the same list as the ones they wouldn’t approve my dispute for. Scammers

Life changer with their credit builder card.

Varo is great. I’ve always been well taken care of during any financial discrepancies, no fees for opening the account/overdraft/having no money on my card (so predatory when banks charge you for being broke!! Their cash advance is fair and resoonsible, not loaning out more than what you can afford based on deposits and there’s an interest rate but it’s very low.

I came here to talk about their Believe Secured Credit Card. I love love LOVE this card. It’s such a smart idea and I think it really helps young people or people who don’t have the ability to get on mom n dads black card or whatever. I’ve had it for about 18mo now and I’ve raised my credit score over 100 points. It’s been a life changer. I’m almost to my credit goal and will be able to apply and be approved for a car loan!! I’m so proud of myself and this has made me want to be as financial responsibile as possible! It’s like I wanna keep beating my score and I do, so easily and FAST!! And I’m building it by just shopping with money on my believe card lol.

Thanks Varo!! Good credit is a serious game changer and life saver as 28yo! I wish more young people would look into secured credit cards bc good credit helps you survive.

Locked out of my account

If you all are going to be doing maintenance on accounts where customers cannot access their accounts for hours, at least give your clients the courtesy of letting us know in advance. I am stuck at a gas station at 3:45 am because I can’t access my account to transfer money so I can pay for my gas. An absolute inconvenience

Update: a representative from the company left a reply to my review insisting that it was my internet connection that hindered me from accessing my account. That statement is absolutely ridiculous because the system displayed a giant screen that stated they were conducting maintenance from 12 am MT - 1:30 am MT and customers will not be able to access their account both through the app and website. Then when I waited up 1:30 am MT to access my account, the screen updated and extended the maintained time to 2 am MT, which is when I decided to leave this review. If I didn’t have connection, how would I have been able to leave this review while sitting at a gas station waiting for YOUR maintenance to complete so I can access my account?

This response shows me just why I don’t want to do business with you all again. Instead of owning the failure to communicate effectively, you double down on it. F for effort.

DO NOT GO WITH Varo as your personal bank !!!

My so called “secured” banking card was breached so, like any other person would do I locked & cancelled my card through the app. I called to make sure that I’ve started a dispute, everything seemed to be going well. I was told that a provisional credit would be added to my account the next day. However, the provisional credit was never applied, subsequently taking my actual money being deposited into my account. I then called for again, this time being the THIRD TIME by the way to get a better understanding about what’s going on just for the supervisor to tell me (for the first time after speaking with three other team members) that my provisional credit is locked until the 90-day process has been completed. So, here I am stuck paying back a fraudulent charge I never even approved of!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT USING VARO! If in the event that your account gets compromised you will be “penalized” by NOT having access to your believe card, or the money deposited into the account. Seriously, If I could rate at no stars, I would. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE! & unfortunately, After being a trusted member for over four years this will be this last time Varo will ever provide me with ANY service they have to offer. 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾

No help

What is the point of having a email support address when you don’t answer emails back? Then when you try to talk to a representative it’s not even a real person! DO NOT USE THIS APP, been waiting for a hotel deposit to be returned to me, contacted the hotel, they have assured me the money was reprocessed the following Monday, yet you could be waiting 32+ days for a deposit to be returned. After some research I see that this has happened to numerous upon numerous people. This is ridiculous, how are you considered a bank but you cant help people who put their money thru this service. I will be done using Varo in the future as this is unprofessional and you can get no help from staff if they even have any.

UPDATE!!! USERS BEWARE!!!
So I made a complaint regarding the app and waiting for money and then I wake up today to my bank accounts being closed! I still had money in those accounts! And was waiting for a refund regarding my $100 fee so what happened to the money that as in my account when it was closed? I will be awaiting a response or be taking legal action against Varo Bank regarding this situation making a review toward a “banks issues” is not justification to close my account with NO EXPLANATION. Will be reaching out for Legal help this Monday!

I don’t like this app at all because for one I signed up using a friend’s referral link for that $30 bonus promotion for both of us to get that $30 with that being said I spent $20 using my Varo debit card and still didn’t get that bonus another thing about that, I can’t even call Varo customer service to speak to a real life person about this issue they only have that in “chat support” so if anybody have any issues with their money they should be able to call somebody and talk to someone at Varo about that issue right? But anyway, I’ve been going back and forth with the support for 30 days non stop. First time they’ve said we will receive our bonus by this certain date. That date came and gone I contacted support again they saying that I did indeed used the link to sign up but their system didn’t pick it up and escalated my case to another “concerned team” for a review then I got an email from them saying I did not used the link therefore I didn’t qualify? I do not recommend this app for anybody else because they did not want to give you your money or even care about the customers so I don’t want to deal with a bank institution who will not keep their word not trustworthy so no thank you I’ll be closing my account with them

Major issues with this bank I’ve been with them for 2 years

The “instant” deposit option is broken I added an instant deposit for $100 from my debit card and after waiting 2-3 hours trying to contact support their response was “it’s still pending if it doesn’t post in 3-5 business days then the money will be refunded” it’s day 3 no money has been posted so I tried contacting them again but guess what they are closed on the weekends 😂 what type of bank closes on the weekends? The chat bot is also broken it just keeps repeating the same answer until you end the chat and ask another question. I’ve had nothing but good things to say about this bank until this instant deposit thing just took my money and I can’t contact anyone
About the problem it’s sad at this point. All in all if you can get a real bank account from
An actual physical bank you should do that instead of making a varo account they don’t offer any real Customer support. Everything is perfect until you get scammed or run into some type of problem then it’s like wow now I don’t want this app anyone nothing makes a grown man more mad than someone playing with his hard earned money I’m furious as I’m typing this because I don’t leave reviews.
