Community, Sustainability, and Treasures

The Buy Nothing app has been amazing for building community relationships in my neighborhood. Especially since moving to a new home during the pandemic has made meeting people so challenging. I really feel like an integrated member of the community, and people know each other even if they haven’t connected yet just because we can see each other’s giving and needs.

Plus the sustainability of giving away old things so other people can give it new life and purpose is really encouraging. I’ve refurnished my entire apartment with gifts from neighbors and nothing went to the landfill because other neighbors were able to reuse and repurpose them.

Plus there are so many kind and generous neighbors in my hyper local community giving gifts that are truly treasures. From a vinyl record player and records, to a fully functional home office, to the plants in my garden, I cherish every treasure I’ve been given.

Join our community! You won’t regret it.

They show everything not in your area.

I signed up as I am part of a FB group already and was able to join immediately. Though I narrowed my community just a few miles surrounding, it only showed me things in different states and places far away. The app is not user friendly and is not a good place for posting or commenting on things. It seems like the users do not follow but nothings agenda/guidelines and it also shows exact addresses of peoples homes before any contact is made. Unsafe and do not recommend. (Use Facebook groups and find your local one instead).

Love this amazing app!

I’ve been an active Buy Nothing neighbor since the early days, and now I love using the app. It has been substantially updated and refined with excellent new features since the beta version. It’s easy to use and functions similarly to other social apps with scrolling through posts that you can like or comment on. I’ve noticed the app has more moderator presence compared to my facebook group, and that is appreciated. The feature I like best is being able to go straight to my own posts to update them, and to find messages specifically from Buy Nothing neighbors rather than wandering around all the names in the fb messenger app. This app is organized, efficient, and a pleasure to use!

Response from developer

Thank you so much for the feedback. We are all volunteers and working to make the app as amazing as the movement! Your encouragement keeps us going!

Current version (not beta) is amazing and way better than Facebook!

All these negative reviews hating on the Buy Nothing Project founders or BETA version (that means the original version of the app that was used to test the app out) are completely irrelevant to how awesome this app actually is.

I have been a part of Buy Nothing since 2016 on Facebook where I started a very successful local group. There were so many times that I wanted to remove my Facebook account but couldn’t because of how much I loved Buy Nothing. But now the app is here and it’s actually BETTER than the groups!

The app gives everyone an opportunity to freely give and receive items and acts of service, regardless of where they are. Users can easily change their location and radius as it changes which makes Buy Nothing way more equitable to people who travel, live on the road, are experiencing homelessness and people who move frequently. It’s really easy to post your gifts and update their availability.

My only complaint is that there aren’t more people using the app but that will change with time. Anyone can help spread the news by posting flyers or just telling friends and family and neighbors. Once this app has more users in your neighborhood you will truly feel the wealth of this gift from the Buy Nothing app team.

Just give it a try and share the news!

Fantastic app!! Easier to open and use than FB by far.

The app is far, far better than Facebook. It’s faster and easier to use, cleaner, more wrap-around. Tons of great features. I like how posts stay in their given order, so you can find things again and know when you’ve seen everything. It stores info like address, directions, and tells folks which item you’re conversing about. It’s great! Make the switch!

Much better than Facebook groups

I love that you can just set your own boundaries with the app. No more groups to join! Just set your location, the radius you’d like your community to be within, and go! :)

Love This app, even if it needs work

Yes it can be buggy, and clunky but this app and project are what our communities need. I’ve given and received many things on here, and connected with my neighbors through the process. Love this app even if it occasionally freezes

Buy Nothing - fabulous.

The app allows direct contact and visibility of those in your community. Once word spreads and more people start using it, it will be a great tool for sharing amongst our local area. Much easier than the restrictive Facebook groups.

Lovely concept, awful app.

BuyNothing, freecycle, and similar concepts are absolutely wonderful and I support them for so many reasons.

This app doesn’t. Imagine combining the most broken sign-in experience you know with a barely usable messaging system, inconsistent and unreliable notifications, and a generally garbage interface based on a scrolling feed. You know, because endlessly scrolling feeds without meaningful filters are how all good shopping apps work (which is what this is, even if it’s basically for free stuff).

Great Philosophy, Terrible App

Love that Buy Nothing built a new app outside of Facebook. I don’t use Facebook so loved being able to tap into the network in a different way. I have been able to gift several items through my local but nothing network now BUT the app is terribly hard to use. It signs me out daily. The activity notifications do not update (they show unseen even after I have viewed things). The two ways to message people in the app are confusing (reply or DM).
