Good concept; clunky functionality

Feb. 2022: I’m glad Buy Nothing is moving away from Facebook, but the app has a ways to go before it’s a good replacement. In particular, there’s no way to filter posts so I can, for instance, look only at asks or weed out anything pending pickup. The fact that the app doesn’t default to the hyperlocal setting, one of the main draws of BN, also gives me pause. This app looks pretty but only works for folks who are using it in one very specific way. That’s not the way to draw people in.

Not location filtered, tedious experience

I was excited to be off the Facebook group into an app that doesn’t rely on sometimes questionable Admins. However, the app asks for a location only to just put it in your profile header. After that the app is basically a long endless feed of posts from people that can be asks or gives- no way to filter and it’s not reader friendly. I also see items hours away from my location and I’m in a major metropolitan city - i should have a way to limit to within 5 miles of my area for example.

Have deleted, will donate directly to charities until the app gets better since I don’t wish to interact with the power trip in the FB groups either

Interface prevents editing (Feb 2022)

Ignore the reviews that say "ignore the bad reviews! they're old!" They're not. In my case, after I added photos I couldn't do anything more with my post and can't edit it because it leaves the keyboard stuck on my iPhone screen. It's an obvious bug and I figured it must have been solved in an update, but after updating it treated me like a brand new user (re-selecting my area, re-naming my neighborhood, etc.) yet it still gives me a button to edit my old post, so it must have recognized me? Yet I still can't scroll down to see whatever options are at the bottom of the post because it parks the keyboard on it permanently. Giving things away needs to be simple (so an audience grows) and this doesn't offer that to givers.

Needs a SEARCH function

This app involves perpetually scrolling down to find the listing that previously interested you. Unless you personally message the giver, you cannot re-find a giver or item. There should be a search bar to type keywords or member name. Would make life so much easier!

Also, when replying to a message on a listing, you think you are only replying to a message individually, but then you realize you just posted your address for all to see! This app needs a lot of fixes.

Please read!

Things that need to be improved 1) The location settings should automatically be set to hyper local (the hyper local community & friendships are what make the buy nothing groups so special) and 2) we need to increase users on the app. (I suggest we increase marking for the app on Facebook group pages, Nextdoor, and in local coffee shops)

Login Settings

User must use logins for either Facebook, Google, or Apple. Disappointed I can’t use my non-google email, to create a login (I have a Yahoo email). Truthfully, I want to get away from using Facebook entirely, and I thought that was part of the reason why they created this app in the first place.

2/1/22 Update: I keep getting logged out of the app, and have to relogin each time. Additionally, I have to reselect a community every time. Would be great if my profile remembered those details.

Great Idea with a few glitches

This app is designed to reduce the amount of waste in our society and reduce the carbon footprint created by buying new items. This is a wonderful thing. As with all Buy Nothing Groups, it takes a while to build up membership to the point where nearly everything is gifted and there are many items available.
It is much easier to post and delete things that you want to give away than the Facebook group. However, there are some glitches. Responding to posts is hard and I often find I have to respond several times before it shows up. Also, I get an extra notification for messages that I have already read.

A great concept, app is a little klunky

First of all I am so so grateful that this happens so we can all get off Facebook! That being said, the functionality of this app is still pretty clunky and there are a few fixes (app dev team, I’m looking at you) that need to happen before it will have the full functionality and ease of use of working within Facebook groups. First we need to be able to reply to comments in a post thread —Without replies the comments section on posts is pretty difficult to follow. Additionally in the Messages section, I do not understand why the sent from me messages are displaying on the left side of the screen, and those of my message partner are on the right — this is the opposite of how (at least the English speaking world) expects messages to appear, so it’s very graphically confusing.

Wow!

Late last night I downloaded the app, set up an account, and posted my first gift in less than 15 minutes. When I woke up this morning someone had replied to the post. I happily handed off the item a few hours later. Done and dusted! This app is fabulous!

This was my very first BN experience. I would not have tried it if I had had to do it via FB.

Frustrastration

I know that the app is a pretty new thing but apparently no one stays on top of it. Only one person ever answered my messages and I was grateful to help her. It seems that if things have been “gifted”, then the posts don’t come down/or the people just figure you can read their minds.
It is really sad as the original way I was introduced to Buy Nothing was on FaceBook and I am apart of an amazing group. I have deleted the app unfortunately. Maybe it just needs more help then ppl can give it.
