  • Some Issues

I love all the kingdom rush games (I’ve literally been playing them since I was 15) but this one has had some issues the others haven’t.

When I finish a level and unlock a new tower/level up a hero, I’ll go into the heroes or towers sections and upgrade/equip them. However, it won’t save that I do this unless I play the next level. For example, let’s say I’ve finished a level, upgraded a hero, and then left the game for the day. When I reopen it the next day, it doesn’t register that I’ve upgraded the hero and instead displays that I’ve unlocked a new tower/hero again (even though I’ve already seen that screen the day before). This results in a frustrating loop of trying to remember what upgrades I’ve chosen before and then trying to remember to not upgrade anything before closing the app. I haven’t had this problem with other games so I’m hoping it’s an issue that gets resolved quickly with a new update.

Another issue I have is the tower descriptions. When choosing towers to equip it’s often unclear if they’re archers, troops, etc. I wish there were more clear descriptions that made sense with the tower types so it was easier to choose which to equip.

Aside from those issues I really love the concept of this. It takes kingdom rush to a new level of gameplay I enjoy (even though I hate choices lol). I really like this next installment in the franchise and I’m glad they’re still making these.
  • Best Devs Ever!

I don’t know how big of a developer team Ironhide is but they are hands down one of the best developers ever in my opinion. I have never had any bugs in any of their games. I have never had to sign any kind of data tracking agreement. I have never felt like they are price gouging or money hungry. They just release great games, bug free, time after time. While they might have a hero or tower behind a pay wall occasionally, other than that, when you purchase one of their games you get (wait for it)….the whole game!!! In todays age of gaming where devs just rush something out to get your money just to fix it later or release some pay to win garbage. These guys have never stooped to that level and as an old school, 46 year old gamer dad, I got nothing but respect for these guys and or gals. So truly, thank you, you guys are the best!
  • No Additional Stages?

Have played all the games to date and really love the concept, execution, and the “feel” of the games.

Was pretty disappointed at the fact that

    1) this wasn’t even difficult or forced you to really strategize and evaluate placement, tower combos, etc.. Combat felt pretty flat.

    2) no new stages unlocked upon completion of the campaign! Seems insane considering the campaign is quite simple to beat

    3) the first 3 games are meaningfully better and more rewarding than the last few installments

    4) while I wholeheartedly appreciate the art, it feels like a lot more time is spent on that than actual game play and strategy elements…you know, the core mechanics!

    5) you don’t actually need to think to beat the game which is quite disappointing. Think I’ve had to restart a stage a handful of times (I try to get 20/20 and if I lose a single heart, i restart) and generally didn’t even need to explore beyond the basic towers

Overall, while I did enjoy my time…it just felt very flat and uninspiring.
  • You did it again!

To be honest I haven’t liked your variation games that weren’t tower defense but this is refreshing and true to form. I think the scrolling map is annoying and I wish there were better descriptions on what the towers do and items as far as actual stats for the items and primary function of the towers. It’s confusing to know which are good or evil. Also the skills weren’t all that impressive this time. Overall still 5 stars though.
  • Starting Characters and Towers are Strong!

In the mobile edition of the game, you only have access to the first 4 heroes and 10 out of the total 15 towers. You can buy everything else for and additional $35 but you don’t really need too in order to win on veteran mode. I’m currently working on impossible mode and I still find the game to be fun and well balanced without spending money. An important thing to note is that it seems you can get everything in the game for $18 on steam which is much cheaper. There is one advantage to playing on mobile however. If you enjoy using one-shot items, you can only get them on mobile and not the desktop version. I’ve accumulated over 6000 gems just from playing the game that I can spend on items but so far I haven’t needed too. Honestly it is just fun collecting them and the game as a whole feels very good to play. Well done by Ironhide!
  • Fun, but…

The game is fun because Kingdom Rush games are fun. But this was is really hoping you’ll pay for more hero’s and towers. It’s also noticeably easier than the past games, in my opinion.

My biggest complaint is the maps. I’ve noticed most of the maps are exact copies of maps from the previous games but just with different animations on them. But the path is the same and the spots you get to put towers are the same. Therefore I instantly knew what strategy to use to beat the map… cuz essentially I’d already beaten the map in the past.

I’m having a good time, I just wanted it to feel like a new adventure and not just recycled
  • Lazy level design/Pay to win

I’ve thoroughly played every kingdom rush entry several times at least. They all had good difficulty that required good strategy, this game relies entirely upon surprises to beat you. A level with simple paths is compromised by flying enemies who fly AROUND the ENTIRE path straight to the back. Not to mention, said flying enemies can stun your units, or even teleport half the path when struck. They are also present on every level past a certain point. The rest of the enemies are trivial and pose no threat, flying enemies are a lazy, lame attempt at making the game harder. Instead of requiring strategy they are just boring to counter. This would be fine if that was all, but almost every later levels difficulty is built around a surprise change or gimmick that isn’t present until the last few waves, which without preparation is almost impossible to be ready for. Not to mention the pay towers and heroes are significantly better then the free ones, in almost every way the paid towers trivialize the game. For a 7$ game, it sure feels like we’re supposed to pay even more to enjoy the full game.
  • Half the game is behind a paywall

The game is fantastic; great art, great story, and great mechanics. I do have a big issue with the game, there are only four heroes available without buying more. There are also only a handful of towers available. The game is very challenging, as it should be, but I feel like the locked heroes and towers would make it much easier. Having already payed to play the game, even preordering it, it makes me upset that in order to experience the full game i have to pay more. I would really appreciate another way to unlock the heroes and towers, such as challenges or special levels, and have the paywall only as a shortcut to unlocking them. The developer has always done a fantastic job with their games, and I hope they don’t continue to have over half of the towers and heroes behind a paywall.
  • Another Gem

I am a longtime fan of the Kingdom Rush saga. This is yet another grand addition to a wonderful TD that’s both classic and fresh! I highly recommend purchasing the games in order of release if you are new to the series. Each game has high replay value and a vast amount of different strategies to discover.
One thing I’m not satisfied with in game is the soundtrack, I don’t know why I feel that it falls a bit short, but it won’t deter a max star rating from a dedicated fan.

Thanks Iron Hide, for another Kingdom Rush!
  • Overall 4/5

As a grown adult who has played the kingdom rush series for over a decade it’s really nice to see the state of gameplay progress over time, I really love that this game uses 2 heroes which also requires a different strategies for many of the maps that are split lanes. I do enjoy many of the carried over features from KR: Vengeance like the upgrade system. The only thing I feel missing from this is the extra mini campaigns provided after defeating the main boss. Aside from that I’d highly recommend this purchase as it is still very fun!
