  • No resort cameras

The original EpicMix app was pretty good. Then they updated the app a year or so ago and it stopped tracking me via GPS, which is cool to see exactly where you skied during the day on the map. Instead, it just registered the lifts I rode using the RF chip in my pass. Not a big deal, but still a downgrade IMHO. Now, they have updated the app yet again from EpicMix to the MyEpic app, which looks like it is again going to be a downgrade instead of an improvement. They have apparently done away with giving you access to the live resort cameras. The app claims it has this feature, but I wasn’t able to find it even by looking under all of the menu options and links. If you go to the resort’s information link in the app, there is a link to the resort’s webpage where you can access the cameras, but how inconvenient is that? I hate it when companies have app developers “update” their apps only to end up with a worse app than before the update. I would much prefer if they brought back the Epic Mix app.

  • Privacy a concern

The app still rarely works when Wi-Fi is enabled on your phone. If you want the app to function well, use it with Wi-Fi off.

More importantly, precision location-tracking never turns off. It is supposed to turn itself off automatically when you leave the boundaries of the mountain. If you forget to check this, the app will map you to your apres ski area, your home, and your drive to wherever else you go - until you change the app’s location tracking settings. This is an awful violation of privacy and it needs to be fixed. (Apple should remove this app from the App Store until this is fixed.) In addition, it completely screws up your stats for that day. I did not ski 900,000+ feet, nor was I on the mountain for 30+ hours.

  • Useless outside of Colorado.

This app works good in Colorado where they have EpicMix installed above the lift entrance. They had these installed at Mt Brighton in Michigan but no longer use them this season. Even though the EpicMix scanners are gone, why can’t the data used when they scan your pass at the bottom with a handheld scanner be logged in this app. Seven Springs, Hidden Valley and Laurel Mountain are missing from this app and Boston Mills/Brandywine Ski Areas lift and trail status are completely inaccurate. Not sure what the purpose of having this app would be unless you skied Vail, Park City or Breck everyday. It would also be nice for dining if the app had the functionality to redeem season pass discount with a built in barcode or nfc tap to pay system.

  • Room for Improvement

Update: It looks like the location of the Hidden Valley resort h as been corrected in the app. However, you still cannot start using the app until you pick/favorite your local resort…too bad my local Vail-owned Resorts are still notably absent. I’m a bit baffled as to why the developers made a deliberate decision to exclude these resorts.

Though it looks to have a lot of functionality, several faults stick out to me when using this app. First of all, you have to favorite a resort before you can even access the rest of the capabilities of the app. I would happily do so; however; Seven Springs, Hidden Valley (PA), and Laurel Mountain are absent from the app despite them having been purchased by Vail and included on their website as included in the Epic Pass. That brings up another quirk…Hidden Valley is showing as 70 miles away from me which would be accurate if it was the Hidden Valley resort in PA, but when you select the resort it is clearly Hidden Valley MO. Lastly, the interactive trail maps are missing trail and lift names.

    Developer Response

Hi tbclark, I wanted to take a moment to address some of your concerns: You should not need to favorite a resort to be able to access the features for that resort. You can optionally favorite a resort to have easier access to it, but you should see an 'All Resorts' button where you can access all resorts and click into one to access features. Seven Springs, Hidden Valley (PA), and Laurel Mountain were intentionally left out of the app, but I will take your feedback back for consideration for future iterations of the app. For Hidden Valley MO displaying an incorrect mileage from your location, please try uninstalling and re-installing the app to see if that fixes it (we released a new app version yesterday). Interactive trail maps will have trail names and lift names once the resort opens, you just need to zoom in enough to see them.
  • Great app, but glitchy

Love this app, it’s functionality, want to give it 5 stars. Could be more stream lined, but on the whole love that this exists and able to use it, especially the real time map and friend location. But I keep having to close it out because it will get stuck on the map page. Then if you don’t go back and turn on tracking again, you won’t record your runs and friends can’t find you. I had to do this 5 or 6 times yesterday.

  • Doesn’t work properly.

I have been using this app almost since it came out. It used to be run, there were metals/accomplishments you could gain by doing certain runs, mountains, days, etc. Now they do not have it anymore. Ever since then, EVERYTIME i go on the app it makes me log back in. I have a brand new phone i don’t think that plays a role in the issue. Also, They have an option to track your day, which is supposed to turn off when you leave the mountain Lol it didn’t even track my progress the last 3 days I used it and said that it had been tracking me in the background 12 times since i left the MTN. that’s not right, works when i leave but not when i’m there?! And lastly they need better sensors on their lifts or something. 2 days in a row and it didn’t count 4 of the lifts I took from each day. It had done this in the past but not nearly this much. Please if anything fix that.
OHHHHH FIX YOUR RESORT CAMERAS. YOU HAVE PLENTY OF FUNDS TO DO SO.

  • Bad app

Update your app with the newest resorts you’ve purchased/taken over. Don’t just collect the data for a year the people want to see their data and the have a right to it if your going to collect it. 7Springs Hidden Valley and Laurel Mountain all need added THIS season not next year. I’ve ridden more days at my home Mountains that you’ve taken over than I have in Stowe and all I’m being credited for is my 7 days at Stowe. It’s 2023 the tech is there for you to move faster and more efficiently. Maybe you should contact me for some help with that I’m extremely good at what I do.

  • Only works with some resorts, GPS always on

While this is an OK, app, it has many deficiencies and issues. Number 1 issue — it wants to track you on and OFF the slopes. There is no need for that and it’s a massive invasion of privacy. Issue #2, it only works tracking your skiing at some of Vail’s properties, typically the larger ones, definitely not the smaller mid-Atlantic areas. Issue #3, it lacks complete information regarding ski areas, i.e. - vertical drop. This is often the typical measure to compare areas. You need to use other apps or websites to find this basic info.

What it does well is as most areas it will show an interactive map that show which lifts and slips are open/closed. It does an OK job giving current conditions, though not great and often incomplete. When many of these ski areas were independent, you would have a personalized reports on what to expect from the day’s conditions.

  • I hate this so much

I just spend 20 minutes explaining what is wrong with this app and then the App Store just *didn’t* save it for whatever reason. Anyway here is a summary:

Lift hours of operation are completely wrong for all mountains, causing mass confusion, stranded customers, and worse off, lost skiers.

Trail maps are not locally saved for more longer than the current session. IE, if you close the app, it deletes the locally saved image of the trail map. If you open the app after a lengthy amount to time, lets say, the amount of time it takes to complete a run, the app refreshes and the locally saved image of the map is lost yet again.

Without paper trail maps, we are reliant on this app, and it is absolutely ATROCIOUS that the app doesn’t immediately download all Epic maps permanently. It would take up literally less space than a transaction at one of your kiosks to make this happen. It is a trivial action that Vail has failed to address.
