  • Elegant, simple, functional

Workflowy does something very simple flawlessly.
You can create tiered lists by simply tabbing items. Whatever gets tabbed is now an item in that list. By tabbing multiple times, you can make lists within lists. That's it.
It's that bare-bones approach that makes it so good, though. The load times are tiny. The layout makes it easy to organize anything and everything you write. There is nothing to get confused about.
Workflowy takes all of the pomp and circumstance out of a list app, leaving something that just WORKS

  • App getting a bit long in the tooth

The WorkFlowy system itself is phenomenal, however the iOS app has been neglected for feature releases for years now. Updates to fix bugs are great and they're much appreciated but even simple features included in the web version like dark mode (a feature that I've been personally waiting on for a good while) haven't made it to iOS.
Because of this, I'm going to be keeping my eye out for a replacement outlining app, but I will definitely keep following this for updates; I love the simple minimalism of the WorkFlowy setup.
Just wish they'd show some love for iOS.

  • Less really is more! My digital whiteboard

In all my years with Apple this is my first review. I'm a productivity and GTD guy and I've tried a lot of tools. I usually end up back at Evernote trying to force "the Secret Weapon", because tasks become projects and you usually need more than a task manager, which Evernote is not. Don't get me wrong, couldn't live without EN. I almost dismissed WF out of the gate due to the old school look and feel, but the simplicity is really what you need. You can draft agenda's, story's, keep team notes, personnel notes, account notes, task or projects lists, any list. You can infinity expand and and use tags. The clincher for me was that you can share or just copy/paste to word and the bullet points transfer perfectly. So your not trapped in the app. I use it from the web on my work laptop and on my iPad and iPhone via the app. Michael Hyatt has it right, everything seems to start on WF now for me.

  • Promise unfulfilled (so far)

I really want to like the iOS version of Workflowy. But it is very far from feature parity with the web app, and the deficits are very frustrating.

    * No documentation, apparently. This may be the most egregious issue, since I am unable to deduce how to do something simple (like complete a task in a list).

    * Very little support for external keyboards, and apparently no support for external keyboard shortcuts (I don't know for sure because there is apparently no documentation).

    * Features that are either unavailable or hidden behind some arcane UI I can't decipher: like starred pages, multi-select, item completion, etc. I could go on but the developers know what's missing.

So I am disappointed. I honestly do not see the exact point behind releasing this app before it has at least got documentation and the same features as the web app, especially since the app appears to be updated only once a year. That would be fine if the app worked better...but it is intolerable for an app that has as many problems as this.

Once again, I wish I could like it. I really do. But I just can't. 😕
