  • Amazing!

As soon as I downloaded Ecosia I loved it. Its entire premise is terrific, and I think that planting trees when people search us absolutely great.

However, it’s not as easy to use as Google is simply because it doesn’t give you the most relevant answer straight away. Google might have this in a box at the top or side, making it better to use since you can immediately find an answer - whereas when using Ecosia you have to scroll through links to find it.

Overall, I would definitely recommend Ecosia as a default browser, but adding some sort of box with the most relevant answer is a must have.

  • I don’t miss what it doesn’t have

This is a great browser doing good work. I thought I would miss tab groups, but I really don’t. It’s freeing to go back to seeing all my tabs in one line, and it means I clean them up more often. Out of sight really is out of mind for me.

I do love that Ecosia also has a reader function, as I like to make text bigger and use dark mode almost always. If a website doesn’t load in dark mode, I just pop open the reader, change the font size, and get back to reading.

Everything else I loved about Safari is on Ecosia now too. The share sheet is as useful, bookmarks, reading list, shortcuts, and find on page are all features I use constantly, so I’m happy to have those and know I’m helping to plant trees too.

  • It works I guess

Overall it’s really not a terrible browser, but it’s not very good either. It felt a little clunky to use, and I found that things didn’t load super well on it. The thing I really disliked the most though was their image selection. When you looked up something, a lot of the times the images didn’t correlate, or there was a very minimal selection, which was disappointing.
Also, I used it for almost a week, and the marker that said how many trees you planted never changed for me, it always just stayed at zero. Could be an issue on my part, but if the whole pull of the thing is to be more eco-friendly and to plant trees, then it’s a little disappointing when it doesn’t seem to be happening.
If it’s something you feel strongly about, and you want to stick with it, go for it. Like I said, it’s not a terrible browser, and I love the idea of it, I just feel like the execution could be better.
(Also, I hate to be that person, but I’m a little skeptical if they’re putting their money where their mouth is. It’s a little hard to believe that they can sustainably plant all these trees just from your searches alone. In the end, I feel like it’s better to just stick to another browser.)

  • my searches aren't being counted

After using Ecosia constantly for a long time, the counter says I've done 140 searches and 'planted' two trees. In fact, I've done thousands of searches. These all show up in my search history. A brief count got me way past 500 until I stopped. Ecosia just hasn't registered or counted them.

Customer service team couldn't answer when I asked. The answer was about where to find things in the new design. But I am seeing exactly the information and asking about the j formation I'm seeing. Two trees and 140 searches registered.

So is this a big fake or is there a programming glitch?

As a search engine, it's not that good. You get mainly paid websites and a LOT of irrelevant links. In English anyway. I often have to use Safari after wading through the Ecosia random link to get a functional search result.

However, if they really are planting trees I'm fine w the extra trouble and I've been assuming Ecosia will over time figure out how to improve its search capabilities.

But to discover that my searches aren't being counted, so the whole point is pointless, that's pretty bad.

  • Needs some changes if it’s wants to be a better alternative

I think Ecosia’s environmental message is good, I want more people to use more environmentally conscious brands and products and I especially want this to grow into a well used search engine. However, they need to change up some of its design and ui choices. The main thing is the images, if you were to search up “iPhone wallpaper” it would show up normally, until you click on a specific image and it will show up weirdly cropped, and if you download and image, it would be a lower resolution than it originally was.

  • Much better than before

From the first time I started using this app to now it changed a LOT. It used to have this bing-fire fox feel to it and it confused the ever living love out of me. But after uninstalling it and coming back to it now it’s so much smoother and feels like it has its own personality instead of using another search engines as it’s face. When you search up anything now it has a beautiful photo to text ratio. For me that’s a huge deal because I’ve gotten so used to googles “quick search” engine. I cook a lot so being able to search up “pancakes” and getting a easy quick photo of what they look like and recipes with a review count makes it so much easier for me. It looks aesthetically pleasing and I’m definitely more satisfied with it now. I can’t wait to see this project grow. I just hope there promise is being held up by the company, But either way as long as the intention is there I’ll keep using this app for my own sake.

    Developer Response

Hi, thanks for highlighting were we can improve Ecosia and for leaving a comment.
  • 5 years using.

I have loved Ecosia, and it’s been my default browser for five years solid. however recently in the last year I kept having to ask google the same question as ECOSIA will not get the direct answers or links, websites immediately. It started to become exhausting, finding the information quickly, often getting utterly useless or not precise links first.i was Forever scrolling to find the information. I’m devestated thst Ive finally had to switch back to safari and giggle, simply to keep life easy and efficient.

For basic info, Ecosia is great but it just drive me nuts trying to find more detailed websites or links, and I’m a patient person. It just offers completely different websites when you type in the same thing on google or safari.

Incredible work you are all doing at Ecosia snd my five years with you are my most incredible, but for sanity I had to switch over back to the giants. Very sad about it too. Good luck and hope this can be looked at as you guys are the dream browser for me as I have not planted enough trees personally.
