  • Great game, great adaptation.

Star Realms is a fantastic deckbuilder and this app is pretty much all you could ask for in a digital adaptation. The initial download gives you the entire original core set, and all the expansion and promo content from the physical game is available for in-app purchases.

In addition to the card content and actively supported multiplayer, the base game and all the add on sets come with tons of singleplayer content in the form of campaign missions with both standard gameplay and unique challenges.

This is among the best board/card game adaptions I’ve seen available in mobile form, and if you love this game, or deckbuilders in general, you won’t be disappointed in your purchase.

  • Super Fun Game!

A fellow board game geek introduced this game to me and it is super fun! I’m so glad there is an app for it because I’ve been practicing, learning the cards in order to get better and actually win a game or two. Now I play the campaigns and online with other players. 👍 here are my thoughts on improvements.
First, could the game makers please add a simple chat ability to the online gaming feature? It’s be nice to have a dialogue with the person you’re playing. Being able to say like ‘nice one’ or ‘good game’ would be fun.
Second, when I go into the arena most often I’m playing with cards I’ve never seen before. It really puts me at a disadvantage as far as strategy and a plan for my game play. Is there any way to be able to arena with people who have the same card pack sets as you?
Thanks again for this super fun game!

  • Appears to only work online

I’m a big fan of Star Realms - this iOS app has been my goto for underground subway rides for the 2+ years I’ve known had it. I’ve bought several expansions and recommended the game to many friends, often citing it as a pinnacle of good game design.

I was greatly disappointed to find that I was no longer to load a game on the subway. I could not play against the AI nor do local pass-and-play; the app would hang on the loading bar screen. If I loaded a game while I had service but started playing as I lost service, the game would stop responding (e.g. hang while choosing a new card from the trade row).

The only reasonable explanation is that logic has been offloaded to remote compute. I don’t see this change reflected in any changelogs.

This is a critical change that makes this game unplayable to me, which is upsetting given the amount of time I’ve put into it and fun I’ve gotten out of it.

If you play only when you have service, I highly recommend it, but be warned that if you have spotty or no service the game will not function.

  • Was good until a few weeks ago

This game was great until the last few updates. In the last few weeks the developer has decided to make small changes to gameplay and UI that have made the game annoying to play. Since these updates, the game has been less responsive and a little more annoying to play. Specifically, I’m referring to how close some of the buttons have been moved together, allowing for errors during game play. However, the worst thing that has been done is now players can concede mid turn and it stops the game immediately. This is incredibly annoying as many players use this when they know they’re going to be defeated midway through another players turn in a live game. It’s one thing to concede defeat, but it’s unsportsmanlike to cut the winning player’s turn short because the losing player doesn’t want to see their loss.

  • Devs - Please allow some suspense

First off, game is great. Probably one of the most successful boardgame ports I have played and I’ve played them all. Star realms is very easy to pick up and very approachable for new comers. I mainly play it online with a group of friends so I will not comment on the way the AI seems to manipulate decks.

Online async play on any platform is almost flawless. ALMOST. The reason for the title of this review and my major gripe is that the online play gives you spoilers. The list of ongoing games tells you the players Authority AFTER the upcoming turn. Meaning you will know if your opponent had an awesome turn even before you see it. That is disappointing. But what’s worse is that the game will tell you you have lost before you see the final turn. It’s way more compelling to have a little bit of authority left and draw a bunch of good cards hoping you can last one more turn and then watching your opponent draw every card in her deck and annihilate you. Instead you get an iPhone notification that you lost or the ongoing games icon changes to “YOU LOST”. Lame. Why not make all that update AFTER you watch your opponent’s turn? That is satisfying to all sides.

Anyhoo, I wish I could say that’s a minor gripe but I find it really disappointing. That said, I’ve still played dozens and dozens of Star realms and will continue to do so. Thanks.

  • Fun but flawed

I really enjoy playing Star Realms most of the time. I pull out the app and get a quick game in when I need to kill some time. Graphics are great and the game runs smoothly. However, you can definitely tell how your cards are dealt is not random. Every time you get a good base card or you get a card that allows you to start scraping your starting hand near the beginning of the game, you can guarantee that those cards will come out last. Every time. I wish they would program the AI to make better decisions instead of simply letting your better cards come out last. Also many times, near the end of the game after scraping almost all of your scouts, you need just a couple of good cards to combo, the four scouts you have left in a 20 card deck will all come out. An almost statistical impossibility. Game is good the AI just cheats and I hate a cheater.

  • Great game that can be played on an iPhone

I love card games but often it’s a challenge to play on my iPhone due to the screen size. Star Realms though was able to tackle this and they did an exceptional job. I love the campaign mode. I’m new to the game and I find the app to be an excellent way to learn how to play and quickly help you sort out which strategies work and which strategies may not. It also a quick way to learn how to play with new cards. Great job White Wizard!

  • Good game, app issues

The game is great and the app works well...except the arenas. The arenas frequently have bugs that range from broken animations to cards abilities not activating, causing you to lose a match and all your progress. They usually fix the bugs, but it’s extremely frustrating to lose because something didn’t work right. The servers often lag as well and I’ve lost because of that as well. It’s still worth buying but beware that the online features may cause some frustration.

  • Broken AI

I really want to love this game but the broken A.I. is a major flaw. I understand the need for an AI to "game" the system to make things challenging for a player. But in this game expect to consistently draw the low power cards like scouts and vipers (even when you have dozens of other potential draws). And expect to be amazed (and amused) as you witness the AI magically draw the best possible combinations of high power matching type cards. Again, I get having to do this but it's really over the top. After purchasing I've been stuck on the 3rd challenge for the past 4 days and I've played dozens of times. Frustrating to say the least. I would stay away from the pay version .

  • Latest update wipes out all your games

The rating is an average, rounded down, of the following two scores:

I give the GAME 5 stars. It’s a lot of fun, I always have games going, and play it every day as a result. I give the latest update 0 stars because it wiped out all my current games without warning.

This is either a horrible hole in White Wizard’s software QA test cases (I’ve spent the last 25 years performing software QA, and understand the process well) or it’s a complete failure by the team responsible for writing their release notes. Either way, it’s absolutely inexcusable. Seriously, WW, did you guys forget this update wasn’t for the ongoing Epic beta or something?
