  • Draw Rates Not Random

Just like the title states. Draw rates aren’t random. Cards have a “weight” that influences where their order in the deck after a shuffle. Card effects/triggers aren’t triggered according to physical game rules. Buy a physical copy of this game. The digital version was either tuned for MtX, or the designers simply don’t care (leaning towards latter). This has been reported as a bug before, and since then draw rates have been improved. But not enough to warrant trying to seriously play this game for anything but idle boredom. It seems it was adjusted just enough to shut up users complaining about the issue. Combined with how the AI functions, these designers are just gaslighting their audience. Caveat emptor.

  • Fun, challenging, the AI cheats BAD!!

I play the physical version of this game as well and it’s fun to have it available on my phone. The gameplay and graphics are good. It’s easy to learn for new players. My only major problem is the AI.

I play on the highest free tier which is the medium difficulty. The AI at this level is remarkably lucky, I mean freakishly lucky! The cards it draws and more importantly, when it draws them versus what you are dealt is very frustrating sometimes. Imagine the best possible draw for the AI and then the worst possible for you. This AI “lucky” streak seems to show up about every 3rd or 4th game and lasts several games. Then you are able to get some good cards and draws and win a few times. This seems to be so that you don’t just give up and delete the game all together. I’ve come close several times but then I’m able to win some and I end up playing on.

Long story short, it’s a fun game but just realize going in that you are only winning when the game lets you.

I don’t care what anyone says, the draws are NOT completely random for you or the AI.

Take this for what it’s worth.

  • Love this game

I got this app for free at first and loved it. I paid for the full version and a few expansions. I love this game. I like it’s a deck building game where you actually get to attack your opponent as opposed to just getting the most victory points.

I don’t know why people complain about the AI being difficult. Even on difficult mode I wish it was harder. I win over 90% of my games on difficult mode. I cant always commit to playing against real people so I mostly get stuck playing against the AI.

The campaigns are fun and definitely a challenge.

Games are super quick once you’re familiar with the cards. I can get done with a game in 5-10 minutes which is perfect for a break in my day before moving on to my next task.

I loved the app so much I bought the actual card game and Hero Realms. Personally I like Hero Realms better, but as of yet there is no app for that.

The app runs fine for me and I’ve never had any issues with it.

  • Good app of the game.

I got into board games about 2 years ago. I picked up this app because I heard good things about the game. I love the computer or pass and play, but I have never been a fan of online play. The setup is nice for online and you have to login online to restore purchases. I just do not have the skills for online. I would try to own the game offline as well if I did not buy hero realms and it is the same game with a fantasy theme.

  • Plenty to do, even in the at the free level

This game is fantastic. From what I understand, it was created by one of the guys responsible for Magic: The Gathering, and it shows in the deck building and stacking of abilities. If you enjoy Magic, but don’t want to spend time on deck management or between games, check this gem out. You start with a basic deck each game and draft from a market in the center. As you learn the different factions, you learn what combinations work well together and get to a point where you can almost always find a good option in the market. I’ve only played the free version so far, and I’ve enjoyed it immensely. In fact, you can play the first campaign stage and then just play battles pretty much forever without paying anything. If you do decide to pay for content, it is reasonably priced in my opinion. A physical version of this game would cost around $20. There is a similar game called “Cthulhu Realms” if you’re into the Cthulhu mythos. My fingers are crossed for Hero Realms to come to the App Store.

    Developer Response

    Thanks for the glowing review!
  • Fun & Challenging, but…

I really enjoy this game, a lot, and I just want to say that before I add my suggestions/corrections. This review is mostly aimed at the developers.

    1. Make it so that we can zoom in on cards to read their descriptions, whether they’re in the trade row or our hand or in play. Sometimes we can’t do that if a thing has actions that can be executed, or for other reasons. It’s really bothersome to be squinting at the screen trying to know what cards I’m even picking.

    2. There needs to be a way to concede a game at any point. Sometimes the button for “concede” is on the menu, but most of the time it’s not, and it’s really tedious to have to exit a game and start a new one without that “concede” option.

Those are all the suggestions that I have for now, but the zoom thing is seriously necessary. It’s a mobile game, make it easier to play on mobile devices.

  • AI cheat + Crashes intermittent.

Paper game is fun and SUPER random and often based on luck or one or two actions after a certain skill level.

    This however:

    1) Crashes randomly on iPad mini 1 + iOS 9.3.5. Not as bad as before so +1 star...
BUT in normal online mode, it takes approximately 30-40s to reopen game to actionable state, so I usually forfeit a turn by like a couple seconds... Arena thankfully gives longer turns!

    2) AI in chapter 2 so obvious not random cards. Dumb. Is this online gambling? Stop lying to your patrons guys... Seriously... WE ARE NOT STUPID! ADMIT AI CHEATS IN STORY MODE ON THE MISSIONS YOU HAVE PROGRAMMED IT TO, LIKEWISE TRADE DECK IS MANIPULATED ON THESE SAME MISSIONS!

Make these missions harder by changing RULESET in a creative way, not just cheating and lying about it when accused by people on iTunes. Responding directly to another user's comment about this by denying it is pretty disgusting. It's not like you're a publicly traded company...

    3) Bug in new arena mode: event cards played too late so I could not discard bc full hand played. It was supposed to fire but didn't, but then after I played my hand it made an overlay for me to select cards, but I couldn't select anything from my empty hand to discard... Forget how I got out of overlay... There was no "none" button ....

    4) most of the expansions should be half of what they are

  • Star Realms- Love this app

    This is a great app.

Simple straightforward game, but with interesting wrinkles and possibilities. Skill and luck both play a part.

    AI play is fun.

Online play can be amazing. I’ve had many games where I grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat. My opponents have done that to me, too. :(

(Up to) 48 hour turns can make an online game move slowly, but it’s possible to have 30+ games going at once, so that’s okay. On the flip side, I have a life, too, and I love being able to play a bit here and a bit there. No need to carve out and commit a big chunk of time to play online. (There is also a real-time option, which I haven’t tried yet.)

You are given overall stats for online play. I find I wish I had more statistics. Now that I’ve played online a bit, I’m stating to see some opponents recur; I wonder how I’ve done against this opponent in the past. I also wonder how I’m doing lately- am I getting better? How do I rate against higher versus lower ranked opponents? I’m hoping to see upgraded stats in the future.

Great game! This has kept me engaged for quite a while.

  • If you want garbage...

This is the game for you. Easy comp will forget it’s on easy and will keep getting all the good cards. Adds additional attack and buying power to get them, just a little that if you aren’t paying too close attention will miss it, and gets strings of low cost but high combo cards right in a row.
If you want a game that’s good, get ascension. A better game, the ai won’t suddenly become god, and it doesn’t appear to know exactly what’s coming in the deck (all the time anyways)
Another con of this game: it’s free to play for a time, but to get expansions (and why would you with how garbage the game is) and even to play on hard, or the full campaign, you have to buy the full game which, isn’t much, but I had a while ago done just that, and now can’t get into my account to restore it, so I can’t even buy it again to see if adding an expansion or two would make the game a bit more enjoyable.
As I stated, if you want garbage, look no further.

  • Great Strategy Card Game

Really Love the game!!! AI is challenging. Been playing for quite a while. Please add the latest expansion sets from the hard copy game to the App. Never fails to work correctly. A sure bet and wonderful game.

However, some constructive criticism... developer needs to make text & numbers much larger to read. Three of the expansions will not open after purchase. Don’t let dialogue boxes hide the cards and if I move the box up or down and zoom in on a card keep the dialogue box where I left it. Make the explosions different sizes and sounds noisier based on larger hit points. If a base has a skill set I can utilize that needs to be used before I play any of the other cards then provide a hint or block use of the other cards.
