  • Morning Expresso with a difference

Excellent updated app from The Economist in easily digestible form getting you the news you need at the start of your day wherever you are. Once again a brilliant component of the excellent Economist sub I’ve enjoyed over several decades. Keep up the great work.
  • New Update - no more free use

Use to love this app and would read the news updates every morning.

However since the new update - there is no longer 1 free article each day. So only bother downloading this app if you’re happy to pay $30 a month for your news.

I think there are better alternatives for that price seeing as this is supposed to be just bite sized news stories.

    Developer Response

Hello, Thank you for giving this feedback. We’ve taken it on board and there are some new developments in the works for Espresso that we think you might appreciate. We would love more feedback from someone like yourself. We’re running some 60 minute Zoom call interviews over the next week, and we’re paying participants an Amazon voucher for talking to us more about Espresso and also commenting on our new ideas. If you’d like to participate please send us a quick message on "espresso-app@economist.com" with the subject line ‘Espresso research’ and we’ll try to set up a time that suits our schedules. Sincerely, The Espresso Team
  • Used it for years, it’s broken.

First off, there are ads. You pay for this app every month and they still have advertisements inside the app. 👍

What the killer was though, they updated the app and removed the ability to see the daily overview for up to a week before. Now you can only see the current day. It’s basically worthless at this point if you don’t open the app every single day.

Uninstalled and stopped paying for this garbage.

  • No longer works on my iPhone

In the past I read espresso every morning. Now the latest version is stuck on the preamble screen. Please correct, I need my daily news update.
  • Needs ability to view previous days

Ive been using espresso since it first came out and i love it. The new version is really visually pleasing and they did a great job structuring it. The only reason im not giving it 5 stars is cause the old version let you read previous days posts. Some days we all forget or are busy but i would still like to know what the news is from that day. Maybe im just not seeing where that feature is in the new version…

  • Bring back view of previous day

The new app is good and I like new features, but I would suggest to bring back the possibility of viewing content from previous days. That was possible in previous versions, but now if you don’t read the day’s content you can not access it tomorrow. Bring that option back please!
  • Comes out too late

The news update comes out too late for Australian east coast users (and I imagine New Zealand!)

I need my news available at 6am, otherwise i won’t get to it. This seems to come out between 7 and 8.30, and not at a consistent time, meaning I rarely get to read it.
  • Perfect but for one thing

Despite being a paid app, this app also seems to contain full screen ads with no visual clues on how to skip them (swipe). I don’t mind ads but it’s a bit rich having such large and obnoxious (and irrelevant) ones in an app I’m also paying to use.

Ads aside, it’s a good app - cheaper and concise access to daily highlights from an otherwise prohibitively expensive publication.

  • Improvements needed

There needs to be an edition for Australia-NZ timezones and an option to remove ads.
  • The perfect morning news

Over a cup of actual espresso, this app proves a wonderfully short, well written, jam packed and often optimistic take on the world news. Links into the full economist app help give detail where needed. Excellent, rimless and hopefully very long lived journalism. Much needed in our age of social graph data powering malincentivised neural network misinformation engines.
