  • Genuinely helpful

I’ve found after a month of using this app I’ve made way more progress with my music theory knowledge than I have within the past 10+ years of trying to understand things on my own terms. The tips, tricks and exercises are very helpful in actually memorising these theory concepts. I find the practice sessions to be pretty fun too, they’re like daily puzzles. I hope we get more courses soon, I’d like to start learning some more advanced concepts and techniques!

  • Incredible app, better than conservatory

I am a former music student that studied piano at conservatory, but my theory had grown weak in the years since I graduated. I was looking for an app to brush up on it and I was blown away by Waay. I hated theory in college - it intimidated me and I was bad at it since my high school teachers never focused on it. This app has me actually looking forward to practicing it and doing the exercises, which is something I never thought I would say. The content is top notch, but the actual app design is beautiful as well. I barely ever leave reviews but this app is just wonderful in every way. Thank you to the developer; you’ve made my life a little bit better because of your work.

  • Tentative 5 Star

I’ve been diving into the world of music theory and have really struggled with finding something that works with my brain. I decided to give this app a try after coming across it on Reddit and the trial lessons have given me some breakthroughs on solidifying some of the basic concepts I’ve struggled with retaining. The trial period consists of the basics of intervals and how to build major scales (it also gives you the pattern for minor scales but the practices are paywalled). I usually can’t do in-app purchases (I have a very limited budget) but I’m genuinely going to try working this into my expenses because it seems like this might be an extremely helpful app. Going to purchase a month soon and hopefully the rest of the courses are as helpful as the beginning ones. I will update once I’ve gotten further into the app but it’s promising so far!

  • A music producer who avoided learning music theory

This is the best method I’ve ever applied to learn music theory. I have deejayed, made beats, engineered for 10+ years now. Finally I’m committed to learning music theory for songwriting and this app is giving me a newfound confidence. I believe it will take me to the next level is my musical pursuits. The app doesn’t give you cheap ways to cheat and actually forces you to study.

    Thank you for this!!!

  • Waaay too expensive.

I have not purchase dance a subscription, but I don’t plan to for what amounts to videos of captions and pressing buttons with no sound feedback.
  • The best app I have ever owned!!

This is the first thing I open up in the morning and the last thing I put away before I go to sleep. I wish this was around when I started learning music. I have never seen better music theory training anywhere. Recommend to anyone at any age or skill level. The memory training is phenomenal. Can’t give enough praise for this app. Very well done. It’s worth every penny.

  • NOT ACTUALLY FOR BEGINNERS

This app is great but the guy obviously doesn’t remember what it’s like to be a beginner in music theory since there are SO many questions I have that he doesn’t answer and there’s no way to find the answer—

He teaches a lesson and then you practice and if you don’t get it too bad you just keep doing the same thing over and over, it doesn’t tell you WHY something’s wrong or how to do it right.

I cannot figure out why some majors have flats and sharps in certain places and where they’re supposed to be. If you know a little bit about music theory, this app might work for you but not if you know nothing, like me.

Please fix so that when people get many questions wrong in a row it will help them instead of just me continuing to get them wrong because that doesn’t actually do anything.

Good quality app so far, but I can’t get past this lesson without help…

Hey, thanks for the review. When you're building your first scales, you'll find everything you need in the "Keys" video (check out the example from about 3:50 onwards).  Each exercise is generally based on the preceding video lesson. So if you're ever having trouble with an exercise, it's often helpful to rewatch the preceding lesson (particularly the examples), and take another look at the reminders that appear whenever you start an exercise.  You're also welcome to get in touch if something just isn't connecting, and I'd be happy to help. Just tap "Get in Touch" under "More" in the sidebar, or go to tenkettles.com/contact. I'll usually get back to you before the next working day. -Alex
  • Fantastic (and with great support, too).

I’ve not completed the full course yet but this is by far the most accessible and intuitive music theory course I’ve done.

It feels “sticky” - as in you want to come back and earn more stars on the practice exercises - and it’s presented in a simple, clear way. I’m actually quite addicted.

There are a couple of *very* minor tweaks I could suggest so far that are probably more to do with my learning style than the app but they shouldn’t put you off at all.

(Just for transparency, they’re are that I’d benefit from unlimited (rather than finite but unscored) practice sessions and it feels sometimes like there’s a little bit of lag when answering the exercises (although that could be me just stabbing the screen clumsily trying to beat the timer - must. get. stars.) Both are really minor and I understand the design decisions as to why it’s not this way.)

Finally, the fact that this is made by a sole developer and that he’s friendly and available to answer any questions you have once you start is also wonderful.

    Well done, Alex!

  • Awesome!

I bought this well-built app a week ago and I’ve already learned so much. I haven’t been able to put it down. It effectively demystifies music theory - very inspiring!
  • So grateful I found this app!

It’s been about 20 years since I last studied music theory, and recently found myself writing songs for the first time in about that long too. Really needed a refresher course and this app has been perfect! It breaks down everything really simply, which is not easy to do with something as complex as music theory, and the practice games are great for making sure you’re absorbing everything and improving your skills. If you need a music theory refresher I cannot recommend this app enough!
