Just another MDM
Think of it this way: in exchange for having access to all of Google workspace (docs, sheets, slides, drive, meet , etc.) you forfeit exclusive control of your mobile device! All corporations (and sometimes academic institutions) enforce this requirement. If you grant this app, the ability to control policy in your device, you are allowing “them” to see everything you’re doing, to control your camera, microphone, location settings, to see your emails (even other accounts). “They” can lock your device, even remotely wipe it should you lose it, just like “find my”.
If it is a work phone, you don’t really have a say! However, if it is your personal device, you have to decide if you want a third-party (your employer or your school) to effectively control your device. Please note: all mobile device management (MDM) software does this! It’s not a Google thing. So you need to make a decision: is access to this content worth surrendering control of your device?
Do you want to be on that work “Google meet“ while you are on the run and driving you child to practice, versus being stuck at your desk with your work laptop?
The trade-off is real.
This is neither a good nor a bad thing; it is the reality of how organizations protect their infrastructure from end points that have access. Why? To mitigate malware, to prevent unauthorized data exfiltration, and to protect intellectual property. It is just the world we live in. Maybe consider buying a cheap, refurbishedold iPhone XS Max for work, and keep that separate from your personal device. “Yeah but I don’t want to carry two phones“! That is a choice.
